Well made video. I am an optometry student, this is the best video I can find on explaining the optic disc change. Thanks a lot.

Thank you, Dr. De Guzman, for sharing. I'm from San Diego, California. Your video on glaucoma is excellently presented. I've always had an interest in learning about glaucoma, and your presentation made it easy to understand, even for a non-doctor like myself. I hope to see more presentations like yours aimed at teaching optometry students in the future.

I had that picture of advanced glaucoma seven years ago and i went for the surgery. I now understand where the damage was. Though the damage has not progressed since the surgery, I am still worried how long my eyes will last. My mother got blind due to glaucoma when she was about 88 years which made me went for glaucoma screening. Thanks for this educative video

Thanks for watching and for your interest. Since it's a large disc there is adequate neuroretinal rim despite the very large cup. You can also see at the upper and lower edges of the photo that there is no RNFL loss.

The cupping theory was mistakenly introduced in the 1850s. In chronic glaucoma, the lamina cribrosa appears to be sinking resulting in the orderly, peripheral-to-central axotomy of nerve fibers at the scleral edge. We are working under a wrong 'cupping' paradigm.

+General Thank you for your comment. I don't know of any journal article, textbook, or other reference that ranks the ONH features as to their relative strengths as indicators of glaucoma. The ranking in this lecture is based on consensus of the glaucoma specialists that I work with.

@happy. Can I please talk to someone about my eyes? It's an emergency. I don't want to go blind. I strained my eyes five years ago and now it's gotten worser horribly. My ootin nerve or the root of my eyes keep striking piercing pains in the back of my eye sockets. My Dr said I have glaucoma. Please help. Optic nerve.
@happydeguzman9 жыл бұрын
Hi Universal035. If you are worried about going blind you should follow your doctor's advice regarding treatment and follow-up. Whether or not you are confident in your current doctor you could also consider getting a second opinion.

Happy dG I went to talk to my eye doctor & my health insurance wont pass through so I can get an mri done to see what the real problem is with my eyes. That is what my eye doctor said to do next. I have to wait a whole next 6 months to see him again. There was nothing else he could do to help me. So Im in pain daily & its worsening.

How do you distinguish grey crescent vs peripapillary atrophy?
@happydeguzman4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your interest. A grey crescent is part of the neuroretinal rim so the grey/dark area is inside of the scleral ring. More info on grey crescents: bjo.bmj.com/content/89/1/3 webeye.ophth.uiowa.edu/eyeforum/atlas/pages/gray-crescent-ONH.htm

Happy dG Hi my name is Ken, & I was trying to find an answer about my eyes & optic nerve. You see, back in 2010, I got real sick to the point I threw up & strained the veins inside my eyes & my eyes have been inflamed each day since then & have gotten worse in pain. The root of my eyes, the optic nerves in both of my eyes keep giving me shooting piercing pains inside & keep giving me elevated pressure inside my brain & keep giving me horrible headaches. It hurts to even open my eyes as I type this information down. I have been to 3 othalmologists & non have couldn't find my diagnosis. I don't know what to do & I feel helpless in pain.

Does the optic disc increase in size as we age? Or can it at least?
@happydeguzman5 жыл бұрын
The optic disc increases in size from birth to around the mid-to-late teen years because the eyeball is also growing during this time. No more change in size after that unless there is a pathologic condition (e.g. tumor).
