Mistake. Never use a masurement tape to set the rake. It is a balance, not a number.

Eduard is correct. In the advanced version of this tip, I used to use my tape for a base setting on the beach, but don't be shy to change your rake when you're on the water to create just the tiniest bit of weather helm when sailing upwind and the boat is flat. This is a good thing to test when training and see what it feels like when you adjust your rake. My tip if you are ready for this advanced method is the set up your rig totally too far raked forward ( bigger number on your tape measure) on the beach. When you sail you will have lee helm and the boat will want to bear away all the time. Next step is to keep adjusting the rake back back until you feel that tiny bit of weather helm. This is the correct rake for the conditions. Another tip is to use a marker at the mast step to show which way you turn the mast step adjuster knob to rake back and forward. Warning. No need to try this if you are a rookie, as there are other more important basics to get a handle on first.
