Ralph Waldo Emerson. He’s the great-great-grandfather in my spiritual family tree. We named our son Emerson after this great 19th century philosopher and when I imagine the heroes whose qualities I want to emulate, he’s on the top of the list. Big Ideas we explore include: Trust thyself (every heart vibrates to that iron string!), nonconformity (and the integrity of your own mind), what must you do? (vs. what will they think?), Hobgoblins (begone), your voyage (of a thousand zigs and zags), and the Royal You (act like that now!).

Ok fellas, no bullshit. Self Reliance is a slow read. But it’s flat out brilliant. Read a little, take your time digesting it, and go back and read some more. I cannot read it after 9:00 pm cause I’ll get too jacked up to sleep. Emerson is a Hero. Seriously folks. Brian is 100% right on this one. I have it on my Nook app, which is great cause I can highlight key parts. Listen to Brian on this one.

Between Ralph (Emerson), Joe (Campbell) and you Brian we have been given the roadmap to freedom, Joy and salvation. Truer words have never been spoken. I contacted you a couple of years ago after my wife and I bought a little piece of property near Flagstaff Az.. I am raising the frame our Timber Frame Lodge Cabin in three weeks. I milled all the Timbers myself and did all the joinery with tools I made with my own hands (I'm a Blacksmith and Timber Framer). Trust Myself? Absolutely. Non conformist? You bet! Zigs and Zags? Oh boy! With the current "situation" we are accelerating the build for our own survival (I'm 64 years old) Instead of building my shop first I am building a Timber Frame cabin first. I'll build the shop as a Pole Barn with a dirt floor. We currently live on the Northern Ca. coast (north of Santa Cruz) The sooner we get out of here the safer I'll feel. Self Reliance is not just a saying or a suggestion. It has to be a lifestyle. I have documented what I am doing on my Instagram page....I only say this to help others. I don't care about numbers. I love how my favorite emerson essay keeps changing to the one im actively studying at that time. Obviously self reliance was my first favorite, then experiance, spirtual laws, then prudence, then history, then the poet, now im back on experiance which is ASTONISHING. I just recieved annotated Emerson as a gift and i can't wait to get into POWER. The divity school adress was pretty epic too. Oh and compensation is truly revolutionary thinking.

@@HeroicBrian This reminds me of the Self Reliance Press that used to exist in South Africa back in the 1970's. I bought some natural diet books from them once. The modern popular psyche in our culture is an infantile mentality inclined towards dependence on the government instead of self reliance. The ancient Stoics gave the greatest teachings on Self Reliance yet there are scientists such as Massimo Pigliuci who have modernized and secularized Stoic philosophy.
