Optimizing PHEV Efficiency! Neat Tech With The BMW X3 30e

So, I own a 2021 BMW 330e PHEV, and like it so much that I had my dealer find me a pre-owned 2021 X3 30e. My wife primarily drives the 330, and I the X3. We regularly plug both in to charge whenever they are in the garage. The city in which I live is conducive to me putting in most of my miles in EV mode. I love how seamlessly it is able to transition between ICE and EV modes. Granted, I wish it had a larger high voltage battery, but it is what it is. We have taken it on two road trips so far, in the 6 months I’ve owned it, and it performs very well - gives me right at 30mpg on extended highway driving. I’ve received several comments on how smooth and comfortable it is carrying four adults. Mine is not the M-Sport edition, so my turn signal clicker is nowhere as loud as the one that Kyle drove. With it being a PHEV, I have no worries about range on road trips - can easily go over 400 miles on Dino juice. Full recharge ona Level 2 in the garage takes ~3 hrs. All in all, I am very pleased with it. Really don’t undertand why BMW pulled from the American market in 2021. Now their only SUV PHEV is an X5, and the latest iteration of that had a very respectable EV range, with a peppy 6 cylinder engine. If I needed more room, I’d be looking at that one.

If you use „Extra Boost“, combustion engine and electric to accelerate quickly, that extra electric torque will drain the battery quite quickly, apparently... 👍 Good report 👏

That is really cool, but I have questions about this BMW hybrid: (1) When you say it switches to ICE, is it really only on ICE or is it actually running in a more efficient hybrid mode when cruising along? Is it charging the battery with the ICE when it's on, and is it boosting the ICE with motor when passing up a hill, then going to EV mode at slower speed limit areas? (2) instead of complicated predictive programming, couldn't any hybrid do all of this just by the speed it's going? After all, if you're stuck in 10 mph traffic on a 75 mph highway, it should know to go back to EV.

Yes to all your questions. It operates like a regular hybrid and still occasionally uses EV on the highway

I don't know about "intelligent". To me, literally seems like BMW set a speed to switch over to ICE. From the tach, you can see that blue stop right at about 65-70. Obviously once you get on the freeway you will hit that speed, then it "intelligently" switch to ICE. Not as impressive as what it sounds like it should've been.

It is intelligent, if you don't have the battery for the return leg it will skim power from the ICE for later. It will also take in to account inclines and declines for energy recovery /assistance and on cruise control will use engine breaking approaching junctions and even bends on highways.

How many Litre/Km or Gallon/Mile? Do you confirm the numbers? In Europe, BMW claims 2.2L/100km

From what I can see in the video, you start with a full tank which for this car is around 50 Liters (info on tank capacity here: www.automobile-catalog.com/car/2022/3005000/bmw_x3_xdrive_30e.html). Fort Collins to Denver Colorado back and forth are about 150 Miles (240 Km). At the moment of your return, I can see the tank being used for half (I assume 25 Litre were used but let's say 20 to stay large). At the same time, the car has used all the energy from the battery. This results in 240 Km using ~20 Litre of Benzin which results in almost ~8 litres x 100 Km. Are these numbers correct? Where are the 2.2L/100km claimed? Is this something wrong with these numbers?

hey late reply but 2.2l is in city driving while still having the battery not fully depleted, after you fully deplete the battery it will only help with accelerations as it saves power specificslly for it, but you will be mainly using the petrol engine which will actually take a bit more fuel than a normal petrol car being heavier. This is a car that has very low fuel consumption during the short commutes and averages pretty much the same as a petrol one on the long journeys albeit it has a bit more power and torque making it a bit more fun
