GIVE THE GIFT OF A TFL T-SHIRT! You know the truck and car lovers on your list want one. (www.duckco.com.... Looking at it on paper, the 2021 BMW X3 xDrive30e plug-in hybrid doesn't pack outstanding range. BMW says it should get 18 miles on a single charge, but is that actually the case in real-world driving? Andre finds out whether he can make the commute strictly on electric power in this video.

Using this car for the last 15 months, here in Europe.. Already 20.000kms but 12.000 just in electric mode. My office is about 17km from home, I drive it daily back home without recharge. It's a topper. And please, don't compare a Tesla with a BMW. Tesla is not bad, but it's not the same kind of quality inside and outside. And when you're out of battery you need to recharge, while here you can go on with the petrol engine. BMW did a great job... Thanks for the test, it's truly a great car!

I had a 330e for a few months before someone made an illegal left turn and totaled it. These days are great! I got questions and stares everywhere I went. In regards to the distance, mine always told me it could drive 15-18 miles on e mode but would usually go 20 miles or so with AC on. Also, don’t forget regenerative braking!!

It's interesting how EPA and WLTP ratings differ. In Europe this is rated for 31 miles, but I've been getting 20-23, like Andre did. If it was rated at 18 miles in Europe, it would be considered outdated and expensive, but at least one could say it achieves better results than advertised. Unfortunately it is still expensive and outdated, and it achieves less than advertised :)

I also had a 2016 X5 40e! Great vehicle. I could commute to my office in downtown DC on battery 1 way and used the engine to get home (or vice versa as I was strategic on if I wanted a warm or cool car in the garage at night). Regularly got 900 miles between fill ups using coal to power the car (electricity). That little 2.0 liter engine combined with the battery was quite powerful as I was able to tow across TN and Ark in cruise at the speed limit with a heavy car on a usual trailer (super heavy trailer). Run in “save battery mode” on the highway and use electric in town. Best way to run it.

Andre, I have not seen any reviewers address the question of the towing capacity/capability of the X3 xDrive30e. The standard X3 is rated to tow 4,400 pounds, I believe. One review of the X3 xDrive30e implied it was not rated for towing, using the "NA" designation in the specifications chart. However, another review of the xDrive30e version specifically said this particular model was rated for the same 4,400 pounds. Can you break the tie? Can the xDrive30e version tow, or like the Toyota Venza (based on the RAV4 Hybrid that can tow a small trailer) is it not rated to tow despite the capable drive train?

All those modes seem really complex. Why not just save $15k and get a Model Y? Somehow the Model Y has more total range than this car which is weird. It has way more power and tech. The BMW interior is nice but it isn't like the Model Y is bad. 3 years later the Model Y will have depreciated $10k and the BMW $40k. I guess I just don't see the advantage.

Everyone thinks hybrids are the best of both worlds but, in my opinion, it’s worst of both worlds. You pay more for the hybrid technology but you still have all the maintenance costs that come with an ICE engine but now with complexity of a hybrid powertain. In my opinion, the charging infrastructure has improved enough now, you might as well go full electric to enjoy all the benefits of crazy good efficiency and damn near no maintenance costs. The Tesla Model Y and Mustang Mach E are great options in the crossover BEV world. One exception might be the RAV4 Hybrid as long as you don’t go too much over $30k price tag. Toyota hybrids have proven themselves to be reliable and fuel efficient.

People who buy new BMW cars outright don't care about the price. People who lease are those that enjoy a new car every 36 months. Those that complain about price and maintenance cost are poor people who have no business buying a BMW in the first place. Those that keep saying get a Model Y are the very same idiots who will constantly keep trading up their Teslas every few months for the lastest and greatest Tesla. There are those that purchased a 2019 Model X but later traded it in for a Model 3 and later got a Model Y, all this trading up and down cost money and these same people are clowning BMW for the high prices it charges. LOL.

Ours charges in about 2.5 hours on a 3.8kw level 2 for about $0.95 in electricity. A gallon of premium is $2.65. So it’s 30-40% the cost of gas mileage. About half our mileage is electric, so it adds up.
