Funny story, I named my WIFI network FBI VAN 2... then I found out a few months ago someone labeled their network KGB VAN 7. My question is, how do I tell this nerd I have a crush on them.
@ZukaroTravon10 жыл бұрын
First see if they're using WEP encryption. If they are, use aircrack-ng to get on their network and then redirect their traffic to a page telling them you have a crush on them. :P If it's WPA, you have to bruteforce/dictionary attack it. Also, you may have trouble redirecting their traffic if they're not using the default password on the router. :P But again, bruteforce/dictionary attacks work for that. Although you could also do a MITM attack and get on one of their accounts which doesn't use SSL encryption on every page and possibly leave a message there (I'm pretty sure Facebook doesn't automatically use SSL once you've logged in, in which case you can steal those cookies, put them in your browser, and log in as that person :P). Or you could just use a packet sniffer to see which sites their going too and maybe find something that identifies them in such a way that you can send them a message telling them whatever you wanna tell them. Alternatively you could just use something which shows you the signal strength and then walk around until you get to the highest signal strength location. Then start knocking on doors. :P Or you could just put the message as your network SSID. :P And hope that they see it.

I switched a few weeks ago from a single-band 2.4GHz NETGEAR WNR3500L to a NETGEAR AC1450. Was hesitant to use the 5GHz band due to its weaker signal strength and building penetration, but the noticeably higher connection rates and speeds are worth it.

pro tip: to update your wireless drivers, first try going to the windows device manager -> network adapter -> right click -> update drivers -> automatically from the internet It's a great way to check without actually doing much of anything. The two catches are that the drivers may not actually be the latest versions, since the manufacturer has to submit them, or they may even just not be available on the database that is searched.

An omnidirectional antenna does not at all have a sphere coverage shape, but more of the shape of a balloon that's squeezed in the middle, or a mushroom. Upgrading to "a more sensitive antenna" will not extend the coverage in all directions, as that's just physically impossible. It will rather squeeze the balloon even more, increasing the coverage "around" the antenna, while making it worse in places like other floors in a house.

Usually when you get a new router,if it's 802.11 AC or 802.11 N,I recommend setting it in mixed mode.This way if you have devices that only support the older B and G standards,they will still work.When I got my first Wireless N Router just recently(after my WRT54GS died),my iPhone was Wireless N,while my 3DS was only Wirelesss G.By putting the router in mixed mode,I was still able to get WiFi on my 3DS,with a bit better performance in some cases.

XboxSkateVids It's just a way to bind a key to a certain function, like changing a key in-game. Some keyboards have a row of macro buttons, usually to one side, that don't do anything unless you bind them to something, usually with software.
@Mournful3ch010 жыл бұрын
XboxSkateVids Let's say my keyboard has 2 macro buttons, Macro 1 and Macro 2. I can open my keyboard's software and set a key combination for either one. For example, I set Macro 1 to say '[enter key]Move up, team![enter key]. Now, if I press that button in a game with the chat bound to the enter key, that message will be automatically typed and submitted for me. Press Macro 1. In game, this will happen. Mournful3ch0: Move up, team! Now, Macro 2 is bound to '[enter key]Fall back, team![enter key]' In game, Macro 2 will activate this. Mournful3ch0: Fall back, team! It just makes life easier. As many gaming keyboards have 6-8 of these, it can be quite handy, especially if they can be configured to what game is being played so you have 6-8 commands per game.
@18aidanme10 жыл бұрын
Mournful3ch0 That would seem kinda useful in a game like minecraft, though I would just use skype to speak to my friends.

Omindirectional antenna will only transmit spherical if they are zero gain, which I have never actually seen. The greater the gain, the wider the coverage but the less it transmits up and down, far from spherical. There are also no guarantees it will actually improve anything as while it might actually transmit the signal further, its not necessarily going to be proportionately more sensitive at reception so might no be able to receive the signal sent back from your wireless device. Another thing, the greater the gain on your antenna, the more interference your WiFi AP will see. Your AP will not transmit the same time as anything else on the same channel is. In an area with a lot of weak networks in range being actively used, you will actually get an improvement from using a LOWER gain antenna as it will no longer see these networks and so not be waiting for them to stop transmitting all the time.

We live in a 3 storey house and the phone line comes in on the bottom floor but the lounge is at the top. The best solution I've found is to connect the router downstairs into a Devolo 1200+ power line network. This also has the ability to transmit 5ghz AC. We have speeds over 30Meg from this solution so the performance is great. You also have the option for direct Ethernet from the power line adaptors to extend the network via external routers. I these power line adaptors are very overlooked and would have solved the issues in Singapore too.

Or just daisy chain routers. No need to complicate matters. Strong/good routers often times cost more than twice the normal routers people would usually buy. You don't need to think about signal strength or anything. Just place them wherever you need good coverage. Like one downstairs and one upstairs.I have three cheap dlink routers that only cost me around $50. Another advantage is you only need to add more than get stuck with one expensive one that does not get you good coverage.

Linus, though the american standard of 1-6-11 is good for places with no more than 3 networks. The european standard has almost no interferance, yet the ability to have 4 wifi networks in the same space, over the channels 1-5-9 and 13. In most cases (unless there aren't many houses near you) this will help, as you can divide the networks up a little more. Though this will only help in suburban to rural areas, and metros will still have the issue of overlapping channels

Wireless extenders can seriously slow down your LAN, even though they "may" give you coverage where you didn't have before. Not ideal if you use your local network for streaming films and such. I'm going to try the powerline next option as i can't wire the far areas in my house.

Ever wonder why your internet isn't ACTUALLY what SpeedTest.net says it is. Well this is why, you are reading the mb/s wrong mb with a little "b" means MegaBITs whereas mB/s is MegaBytes the more popular Byte used in your computer to tell you how big files are. So SpeedTest.net says my internet is 12.3mb/s (MegaBits) download but it actually is 1.5mB/s (MegaBytes). Internet providers want you to think that your internet is faster than it actually is. So Google Fiber isn't 1GigaByte download speed, it actually is 128 MegaBytes download and upload speed.

Yeap. there are at least a TOTAL of over 14 different variables that influence the speed of web surfing. I had to explain this to EVERY single comcast customer call I received at internet support in madison mississhitty back in the day. There were amazed as to WHy the " new account" set up rep DIDN'T bother to explain any of it as they though upgrading from economy class 1mbps to what WAS decent 8mpbs with power boost at the time.was the big dog for residential..as to WHY their internet speed DID NOT go 8 times faster in web surfing and downloading files.

here ya go: Bits vs Bytes as Fast As Possible
@vwestlife10 жыл бұрын
Telecommunications data transfer speeds have always been stated in bits per second (or kilobits/sec, megabits/sec, etc.). The reason is that back in the olden days (1960s-1980s), not all connections used 8 bits per character; some computers used 7 bits, and teletypes used only 5 bits per character. So, Internet providers are not trying to make their service sound faster than it really is by using bits instead of bytes; they're just following established nomenclature.

From several astute comments I've seen, people seem to be talking about the Omni antennas actually having a Cardioid or Sub Cardioid pattern, the mushroom or heart shape. Either way. its still a pretty round pattern and acts like a sphere unless you're below it.

I did a repeater trick once and it helped with a weaker router. P.S. You can mod a satellite dish for better wifi

I have a Netgear 2.4 and 5ghz 300mbps repeater that's been working great, It hooks up to 4 different PC's laptops in my home and 1 being hooked up wired from it and no issues what so ever. Power Adapters I had some crazy issues with it which rendered it almost useless.

Hi Linux, love all your videos. I have a tp link router in the living room and i use a tp link WiFi extender in my room. I use an Ethernet cable to connect the extender to my laptop and play games online like gta 5 online and it seems to work great so i wanted to ask, does using an Ethernet cable on the extender boost the signal output?
@Mr.Unacceptable8 жыл бұрын
+Temidayo Abayomi-Zannu I take it the router and hotspot are connected wirelessly? No physical cable between them. As a general rule, you are always bottlenecked at your slowest point. If your Wifi card is an old A or B and Your router is an newer N or AC then plugging it in would be faster.

Ugh, my school decided to use ONLY the 5ghz band. It doesn't really effect me, as I have an iPhone 5, but everyone with iPhone 4's can't connect. Super annoying.

Should probably mention something about upgrading your cable modem to one that has docsis 3.0, or waiting for one that has docsis 3.1 so you can even get somewhere close to the potential of 802.11ac.

Linus, after installing a wireless repeater I came to discover that my repeater was using the same channel as my Access Point, and could not change the repeater's channel setting. I know that this will cause interference, as i now have 2 SSIDs on one channel, and I don't really see the purpose of having a repeater instead of a second AP given that I need to extend my network's range. Am I able to change the channel setting when my repeater is connected via Ethernet? Should I be concerned with the interference between my WAP and my Extender?
