Great analogy with the builder Linus! However, I think it would have been more accurate to say the Hard Drive is his tool box, and the internet is going to the truck. The tool box is there with him, but it takes a while to dig through and find the right part. The truck isn't right there, and going to the truck is kinda like going on the internet (browsing a ton of data). I understand how your way works, but I just thought I'd throw this out there.

NOTE: 512GB is equivalent to 0.5TB (terabytes), since 1TB is equivalent to 1024GB. And since the theoretical capacity of DDR4 memory is 512GB, that may mean that you can get 2TB of RAM on a general gaming motherboard in the near-future.

@MishMash95
@MishMash95 10 жыл бұрын
DDR4 compatible hardware is going to be bloody expensive when it comes out, we're probably talking processors upwards of $1000 and the actual ram itself will probably be something like $300-$500 per 4GB, as new technology is always expensive. We are also uncertain on when it will be out for the consumer, and even a DDR3 computer will run great. At the start, you will get much MUCH better value for money with a DDR3 based system. DDR4 is only for those who are willing to spend much more to get a little bit better (in terms of cost equivalence) to get the new and best technology. It's the same with high-end i7 processors. You can get one which is only perhaps 5% better than another, but it will be 3x the cost. (And graphics cards for that matter.)

@levi799
@levi799 9 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Alvarez There are video games with the size of 30GB. Having 512GB of memory would probably allow whole programs to be on RAM, even the big games. Making them work really fast. Right now you only add portions of a game to the RAM, that's why SSD's are so important right now, because many programs are still being accessed from the drives to the RAM and so on. So if you could start a game and the game gets uploaded to the RAM you would probably never have a "loading" screen because it would be pretty much instantaneous. Of course it would still take the initial time to load it to the RAM which would be capped by the speed of the drive, preferably an SSD. This is all a small theory though. I don't think we will see this on DDR4 though.

Right now it's more of a prototype. It exists and works, but has no practical use at the current time. I do agree that DDR4 isn't necessary, especially because of the current capabilities of DDR3. Eventually the rest of the hardware is going to catch up and it's going to see good use. Think of USB 3.0. There was a time when it couldn't be used for much, simply because there wasn't much out there that supported it. USB 3.0 however was different because USB 2.0 was an all ready outdated technology, and it needed to catch up to match the speeds everything else around it had.
@str0ntium90
@str0ntium90 9 жыл бұрын
Sinister Steel It doesn't generally work like that. Just as DDR3 is the only type of memory in use by the memory controllers in contemporary consumer chipsets, sooner or later the same will happen with DDR4. Its either not an option, or your ONLY option, depending on your motherboard.
@GTSRyan

No such thing as DDR5 but there is something called GDDR5 which is the memory used in gpu's and is based on DDR3. Search GDDR5 on wikipedia, you'll find out everything you need to know about it.

Very nice analogy with tools! Although I would say that tools in builders hands are CPU registers (this is the most correct, because in there actually the processing happens, like with the builders hands), belt is the CPU cache, RAM is a toolbox sitting nearby, hard drive is his truck downstairs, ...
@VistaAmericana
@VistaAmericana 8 жыл бұрын
Nice analogy with the tool in hand, on the belt, down the later, and at the store you have to drive to. It would be interesting to through in where the SSD vs the HDD would be and PCIe vs SATA connection also.

APUs are going to murder the low end market when DDR4 comes out. It'll be like a wasteland of Intel Celeron and Pentium SKUs and Nvidia x30 and x40, alone unwanted, unneeded.

I definitely agree but ive been watching promotional videos of crucials ddr4 ram and that it only has its bandwidth increased by 50%. Does that mean that the frame rate will only be 50% more? Not to say that 50% isnt a lot but I wonder if it'll be enough for the APUs to evolve throughout the next 5 years or so. Plus if the memory is as fast as GDDR5 then the question I guess is irrelevant but still.

thats impressive. Modern hard drives transfer around ~120mB/s. thats a transfer bit rate of 960mbps. you would need an unthrottled fibre, and a router that actually gets close to gigabit (most routers don't) for that to happen.
@10mbc
@10mbc 10 жыл бұрын
iamterence77 I can get about 100 MB/s from my gigabit fiber and my (not really modern 1 TB HDD) does about 85 MB/s. I could get a new HDD but there is really no use for it because I have a 250 GB Samsung SSD for the main drive.
