Great analogy with the builder Linus! However, I think it would have been more accurate to say the Hard Drive is his tool box, and the internet is going to the truck. The tool box is there with him, but it takes a while to dig through and find the right part. The truck isn't right there, and going to the truck is kinda like going on the internet (browsing a ton of data). I understand how your way works, but I just thought I'd throw this out there.

NOTE: 512GB is equivalent to 0.5TB (terabytes), since 1TB is equivalent to 1024GB. And since the theoretical capacity of DDR4 memory is 512GB, that may mean that you can get 2TB of RAM on a general gaming motherboard in the near-future.

Not unless you are specifically planning on getting the new ethusiast motherboard/cpu's, since it will still be some time before ddr4 will be released on consumer grade products.
@sauron142710 жыл бұрын
No, only get ddr4 if you bsolutely want a cpu and motherboard that supports it. The current implementations actually perform worse than high end ddr3.
@MishMash9510 жыл бұрын
DDR4 compatible hardware is going to be bloody expensive when it comes out, we're probably talking processors upwards of $1000 and the actual ram itself will probably be something like $300-$500 per 4GB, as new technology is always expensive. We are also uncertain on when it will be out for the consumer, and even a DDR3 computer will run great. At the start, you will get much MUCH better value for money with a DDR3 based system. DDR4 is only for those who are willing to spend much more to get a little bit better (in terms of cost equivalence) to get the new and best technology. It's the same with high-end i7 processors. You can get one which is only perhaps 5% better than another, but it will be 3x the cost. (And graphics cards for that matter.)

I'm surprised DDR4 is going to have a theoretical capacity of 512 GB... I remember when 2 GB of DDR3 on my laptop was the cat's pajamas...
@levi79910 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Alvarez There are video games with the size of 30GB. Having 512GB of memory would probably allow whole programs to be on RAM, even the big games. Making them work really fast. Right now you only add portions of a game to the RAM, that's why SSD's are so important right now, because many programs are still being accessed from the drives to the RAM and so on. So if you could start a game and the game gets uploaded to the RAM you would probably never have a "loading" screen because it would be pretty much instantaneous. Of course it would still take the initial time to load it to the RAM which would be capped by the speed of the drive, preferably an SSD. This is all a small theory though. I don't think we will see this on DDR4 though.
@husky1993a10 жыл бұрын
Voyd Void Probably not, but DDR4 does look enticing for my next build in a few years :)
@UndercoverArgonian10 жыл бұрын
Right now it's more of a prototype. It exists and works, but has no practical use at the current time. I do agree that DDR4 isn't necessary, especially because of the current capabilities of DDR3. Eventually the rest of the hardware is going to catch up and it's going to see good use. Think of USB 3.0. There was a time when it couldn't be used for much, simply because there wasn't much out there that supported it. USB 3.0 however was different because USB 2.0 was an all ready outdated technology, and it needed to catch up to match the speeds everything else around it had.
@str0ntium9010 жыл бұрын
Sinister Steel It doesn't generally work like that. Just as DDR3 is the only type of memory in use by the memory controllers in contemporary consumer chipsets, sooner or later the same will happen with DDR4. Its either not an option, or your ONLY option, depending on your motherboard.

I would use the analogy that L1 cache is the hands, L3 is the belt, and RAM is the toolbox, while mass storage is the store down the road, which can be faster to access as the RPM of the motor in the car increases, and even faster with a car of a greater architecture. ;) I know, I made it way overkill.

Very nice analogy with tools! Although I would say that tools in builders hands are CPU registers (this is the most correct, because in there actually the processing happens, like with the builders hands), belt is the CPU cache, RAM is a toolbox sitting nearby, hard drive is his truck downstairs, ...

But what about GDDR5?
@thewalkingsentry3399 жыл бұрын
Gddr5 is vram so it is only used for video. So ddr3/ddr4 go to the CPU and gddr5 goes to the GPU in your graphics card

Stop being such a conman, Linus. Everybody knows that you can download more RAM. By now, I bet we can install upgrades for our DDR3 memory for free.

SonicXRage I downloaded a USB stick that upgraded my RAM to 6TB of DDR5 and now Windows Media Player loads all of my pirated music faster!

You have some great points, especially for those new to technology. 3200MHz stock is not an oranges to oranges comparison to DDR3, because of slower DDR4 timings [CAS, etc.], note that this is in reference to only your "speed" remark. DDR4 is not the only beneficiary of die shrinks, 64GB USB "flash" drives smaller than a thumb nail.

2:17 is : ddr4 is designed particularly to improve performance on multi-core systems Amd Fx series processors were relased from 2011 to 2013 and they use am3+ socket. There are no am3+ motherboards with ddr4 memory support so amd fx cpus don't support ddr4

LinusTechTips , this is the best analogy so far when trying to explain RAM to non-techies.

Nice analogy with the tool in hand, on the belt, down the later, and at the store you have to drive to. It would be interesting to through in where the SSD vs the HDD would be and PCIe vs SATA connection also.

This is great for games like Arma 2 and 3 where the only bottleneck in a high end system is ram bandwidth. Its more important than most ppl tend to think.

Registers are like your hands; Cache is like your toolbelt; RAM is like a toolbox down the stairs; HDDs are like a toolbox located on a skyscraper on the other side of the world. Cloud storage is having a toolbox located on the moon.
