They stuck with TSMC 4nm node variant as TSMC raised prices for 3nm and 2nm nodes by 10% and the nodes were already expensive before that. On the same node it is basically impossible to get any major uplift as Moore's law isn't a thing anymore, you cant design better hardware. That's why CPUs have stagnated again as well. The jump from 30 to 40 in performance was because they went from I believe 8nm process to 4nm process. 4090 and 5090 share the same process, so realistically you won't see a similar jump until they go down to 3 or 2 or even 1. Using the same process the only real way they had to ink out performance was iterative improvements and sizing up the gpu die itself as well as increasing the power draw.

Wait, so what's the latency situation here? Ali says that with no FG on the difference is only about 3 ms, and shows a clip of Cyberpunk with no FG at 30 ms latency. Then he shows clips of Cyberpunk with no raytracing, no FG and a latency of 13 ms. What is causing the gap? RT?
@sijiajayi29682 күн бұрын
It’s a 3ms penalty in comparison to the base frame rate without frame gen. The 13ms was 200+ raster “real” frames, which would obviously have better latency than having around 80 frames being boosted to 200+ with frame gen. Basically “real” frames will always have significantly better latency than equivalent fps with frame gen, but the latency penalty between the base frame rate and using frame gen is minor
@yurikanexc12752 күн бұрын
There's only a 3ms difference in latency between FG 2X and FG 4X, despite the substential gain in frame rate. The increase of latency for FG 4X compared to "true frames" at 4K 240Hz is 20ms, but obviously you have to crank down the graphics settings pretty agressively to achieve such a high "raw" frame rate.
@xskullcrow3269Күн бұрын
It is true, FG adds no latency whatsoever, latency comes from the amount of real frames you are running at. In the first comparison it used the same graphics settings but one with FG enabled, you can see its 77 real fps vs 256 fps and same latency. In the second the lowered the graphics to match the fps of FG with real fps, he got less latency because the game runs quicker.
@thegwd772 күн бұрын
I'm glad to see a review where the person actually played a game with it, and got to tell us how it feels. Also Cyberpunk is one of the most intensive games, and seeing that low latency with all the bells and whistles is pretty impressive. That said I hope we move away from fake frames in the future for the simple reason that more real frames means less artifacts, ghosting/guessing, especially when dealing with reveals and fast moving objects. Also some of these objects aren't even moving that fast, we just saw what was behind them, and we can still see ghosting.

It really is cool if you're not playing a competitive game - or using a gamepad and are less likely to notice a difference. I can't really speak from the true experience as I don't own a 5090 but Lossless Scaling on Steam recently added support for multi-frame generation so you can get a taste of what it's like. I bet Nvidia's is better but even limiting a game at 75-90FPS then using 2x or 3x frame-gen w/ FSR, the implications on energy-saving is interesting, especially at higher resolutions where it saves more work WHILE giving you a very convincing experience. It can also be used for games that cap their FPS to something like 60, rendering at 144+FPS via framegen is really nice for the QoL.

5:02 This is exactly my feeling with framegen - the latency hit isn't egregious, because I'm not playing spastic shooters or competitive multiplayer games. I'm stuck on an RTX 3070 for the foreseeable future, but using Lossless Scaling to hit my 120+fps preference in every game I play. I don't mind the artifacts because the smoothness is worth it.

It’s fine in something like Alan Wake 2, but I cannot play with frame gen in Cyberpunk 2077. I think added latency isn’t the issue, it’s that you’re playing with the input latency of non-interpolated framerate. I think it works well with a controller but doesn’t feel right with a mouse input imo

If you use this card 8 hours per day at 500W for 5 years = 7300 kWh. You also need to purchase AC for your room because of this card. Thats close to $2000 in electricity bill in many countries.

@-Burb2 күн бұрын
Wow electricity is expensive wherever you live. In the US with my cost of $0.15 per kWh it would cost $0.60 to run a card at 500W for 8 hours. Do that every day for a month and it’s $18 per month to run it at full tilt for 8 hours every day (not typical usage).

Now this was the review I was looking for. Thanks @optimum have not seen this channel before but you defiantly have anew subscriber!!! I know team Green was full of crap with there "5070 just as fast as a 4090" but this is we want to see, actual in game compare for each of the settings. As a dad gamer I only care about my 165 hz ultra wide 1440p @ that speed. Based on your info i would gladly give a little bit of artifacting for a 200hz experience at High or above rez. I 100% agree with you about the experience being so much better at higher frame rates. I think I will wait for the 5080 reviews and if it goes before mating my decision on upgrading my 3080.

That price increase doesn’t justify 25-30% performance. If I had a 4090 I would keep that until 6090, if you are looking to buy right now I would look for a 4090 on sale. Nvidia can eat a dick with these prices every gen.

"You can set everything to max quality and still get a smooth experience" - I do that already with a 4070 super. A small 1080P monitor sure makes life easy.
@MalakaiProgrammer2 күн бұрын
That's fair. If you're purely gaming / generally using your computer for leisure, 1080p is a great option (well, 1080p screens are good for most kinds of work too, but bigger screens help a lot for different jobs). It's kinda strange to get a 4K monitor for gaming.

I miss the times when game optimization was as important as a new gpu. Just recently I watched a video from Threat Interactive which discussed this topic directly. GPUs could be used so much longer or newer GPUs could be made more efficient, so the Laptop segment would be in a better state
@wolfsbane99852 күн бұрын
The new GPU's increased focus on AI features will only make game optimization worse, because now developers can more heavily rely on AI for their "optimization." It's already been happening, and it will get worse.

These are some of the cleanest, most beautiful, most easy to comprehend, best for the average Joe graphs I've ever seen in a review, truly such an amazing presentation all around - from the very graphs to the whole aesthetic itself. There's a reason I first jump onto optimum's reviews prior to watching any other channel - many of them are absolutely fantastic with a ton of information, but I first need some clean and straightforward baseline to get started. Never change, Ali, seriously, never change, what you're doing is just superb. I'd personally be completely fine with the increase in performance being equivalent to the increase in power draw with the 5090 over the 4090 had the price not been equally higher. If it wasn't for that and nVidia's straight up insane lies with their marketing gaslighting us into believing how fake frames are a real performance increase as if there were no drawbacks to them whatsoever, the 5090 would be so praiseworthy.

NVIDIA is working closely with power companies 😎
@kcrain81Күн бұрын
If you divide the power by the number of fps, that could be considered a power efficiency metric. Using the GoW metrics you showed around 4:00, the 4090 requires 2.88 W per fps, while the 5090 drops that value ever so slightly to 2.80 W per fps. So one COULD argue (albeit weakly) that the 5090 is slightly more efficient in the wattage per fps generated than the 4090...
