Actually, he probably gets somewhere in the mid-20's for miles a gallon. Great thing about diesels is the more properly tuned and powerful they become, the more economic they get.

next2talljones Not necessarily in this case. With tires that size there is no way he's getting mid 20's even if it was geared properly which it doesn't sound like it is. And with all of that black smoke, that's an indication that it's not tuned properly and that you can watch you fuel needle move towards E. Properly tuned with stock tires or just barely bigger = better milage yes. Not in this case.

Chris Hill It's not entirely impossible. If you watched Diesel Power Challenge either 2012- 13 (can't remember) one of the big Duramaxs (dually on 37's) got 29mpg highway. I personally had no problem getting high-20's with my previous truck, which was also on 37's (4.56's and a manual trans granted). Generally tunes are done to maximize performance at operating RPMs, say 1750 - 2200rpm. Smoke under slow speed acceleration isn't always a tell tale sign of a bad tune, it just may have a pretty ridiculous curve on the fuel map. I'm not all terribly familiar with how the tuning is on a Cummins, but with plenty of experience with EFI live tuning my old LLY I can say that there really is no way to make everything all ho-hum at all rpms at all speed under any load. Hopefully with the new stand alone ECU coming from Bosch in the next year or so (oops. spoiler alert) we may be able to do better. e.g. EFI live has 110,000 map parameters where as the new unit has well over 1,200,000.

goo5976 until recently, 6.7 made 650 ft lb at the flywheel. But I do agree, unless he's running absolute mammoth turbos, compounds just don't make that much power 1000 hp at the most, unless they are factoring in water methonal injection and a enormous shot of nitrous, I just don't see it.

mine does 19 city and 23 highway, this truck is way more modified and running a ton more boost making it much more efficient at any point in the power band therefore more fuel efficient unless you get on it.
