Theory time: Wheeljack's corrupter actually brings out the repressed part of a Transformer. Megatron for example deep down knows what he's doing is against what he originally started his revolution for but sees no other solution. The corrupter turns him into his IDW Autobot counterpart. Optimus despite being a responsible leader fighting for what's right, deep down wants a normal life. But being a Prime and Autobot leader makes it impossible. And as pointed out, Optimus hopes that after the war is over he will finally be able to commit to Elita, but realizes the way he was doing it will never end. He deep down knew only one way to end the cycle of war so he can finally have the life he wanted, but believed it was cruel. Then the corrupter hit him and you know the rest.
