Barchart, I did a search for contango and found the term defined as "Contango is a situation where the futures price of a commodity is higher than the spot price". This may be a driver in volatility but I don't think you mentioned comparing the two market prices. Backwardation I found defined as the opposite. Is there a correlation? Ty.
