@@yuzhou1 the position is not static. they can be rolled. risk management, and position sizing prevents getting wiped out. I make many small bets. even naked shorts can be stop loss and any point. if you want to define your stop loss in the trade, then add a long wing and don't go Naked.

In another video nine months ago, Tom pointed out that on a 7-year backtest on SPY, QQQ, and IWM, they noticed that picking a side has a better outcome than trying to be neutral with a strangle. His delta 0.05 strategy, 170 put & 350 call shorts would work out if held to expiration but be negative if exit in 21 days.

What does trade small really means specially when selling Strangles?

It means that if the stock moves 2 standard deviations in either direction the loss on the straddle should not exceed roughly 2% of your total portfolio. So for example if you’re have a portfolio of $100k, the 2SD move in a stock should equate to about a $2k loss in your portfolio. If it is larger than $2k then you need to sell fewer contracts or sell straddles on a lower priced stock.

I sometimes do targeted butterflies OTM as a cheaper long call/put replacement with better returns for the capital. 2 weeks or less for gamma to work with you. If you do them you have to be fine with total loss or most since they're already out of the money but the payoff is amazing when they do pay off

How is risk being handled with this options play? I understand buying-to-close both legs at the 21 day mark and exiting the trade if either strike is crossed but what about handling risk when implied volatility spikes? Ride it out or set some threshold? This might push one to try and enter into strangles where both legs have a higher than 50% (or some other threshold) level of Implied Volatility. What are your thoughts on this?

But just ask yourself, what percentage of 'normal' option retail traders consistently loose money? 70, 80, 85, 90%?? Whats being sold and thus fed here? BTW, Jjust 35 years trading.
