You say in the review at about the 4:50 that the Sony doesn't use an iris. The 265 doesn't have a dynamic iris, but the 365 does according to others and Sony themselves. Did you disable it or something

According to both our Sony training and their website you have to go to the 675ES or the new 385ES to get a "lens iris" but we did not do anything to disable one. The Sony does have some form of dynamic light control which is why it has such good blacks but on bright scenes the blacks are not quite as good as would be expected with an iris or dynamic light control. In either case when the scene is somewhat normal or bright the iris or dynamic light control is at minimum which is where this Optoma does very well and can hang with the best we have seen.

I have a 92 inch mitsubishi DLP tv and I can tell you it has a very smooth picture with excellent color. It is razor sharp with a good signal. It has never had any motion problems at all. I can watch this tv all day long and my eyes never get tired unlike my wife's LCD. I have had this tv for almost 6 years and pulled the light engine to clean the fans, lens and heat sinks. When I put in a new bulb the picture looks like it did when I first turned it on. The light engine is sealed from dust and that is a huge plus. My next purchase will definitely be a laser base DLP. A 120 inch screen will fit perfectly in my living room and a UHZ65 sounds like a really good move.

Thanks for this, and at the one point specifically talking about the 4k image on the DLP projectors. People hear "shift" and they freak out calling it an e-shift, which the DLPs are not. It's a physical mirror shift that then produces another row of individual pixels... it's just don't at something ludicrous like 3-10 microseconds. So the DLP is a true 4k image, it's just interlaced at the microsecond timescale.

Correct, the "optical actuator" of the DLP chip is very different that "e Shift" or "4K enhancement", there are twice as many pixels on the screen and the key result is surprising many skeptics when they see it in person as it is a very good image and hard to beat under $5K and even under $10K it is competitive in detail and sharpness.

One other question, does the UHZ65 have lens memory for easy switching between 16:9 and cinema scope aspect ratios? Or is that going to have to be a manual zoom adjustment?

The UHZ does not have a motorized lens or lens memory. It does have the anamorphic stretch and compression for use with an anamprphic lens which does not give up brightness or resolution, however.

Overall, I think the Optoma puts out a nicer picture, much more true to life with what I would call "superior microcontrast" despite having a lower native resolution. I was bothered by the blues appearing purple but after going over to the website I saw that that isn't the case, the blues are blue, REALLY blue and not purple like what the video shows, whereas Sony's blues look more cyan (which is likely closer to reality). The main difference I see other than the microcontrast is in regards to the white balance. The Optoma has a cooler white balance whereas the Sony has a warmer white balance. They both look amazing though but for me, the difference in price would be the ultimate determining factor.

If you freeze the frame at 8:03 notice the the cross bars on the windows you will see on the DLP they are much brighter and actually show some that the Sony can't produce or they are much more pronounced on the DLP. Everything looks sharper on the DLP.

Yes, it really is almost scene dependent which one looks best. Also the sample we had may or may not be the full final performance of the production versions. We will update as soon as we get our own unit hopefully later this week if any changes. We did not have time to calibrate in any of its brighter modes so stay tunes for updates. Great comparison. I just sprung for a UHD65 and now I'm wondering if I acted in haste. Granted , there is nothing like it at 2.5K but the new Sony and the UHZ look oh-so-tempting.

You should be good, unless you need the higher brightness of the Sony or UHZ65 the improved color is not a night and day difference just an incremental improvements and the contrast is really only slightly better due to the higher light output thereby increasing the overall contrast ratio. The main advantage is the higher brightness as this time we compared the Sony in its brightest mode where before we were in its low mode to be fair to the UHD65. Of course if you are a big fan of HDR then yes, either of these projectors definitely give you more punch.

Yes, we will do a UHD65 and the UHZ65 comparison with a final production version of the UHZ65 instead of a "sample" We do not handle the Acer line of projectors but would be glad to compare if one were to be sent to us.

We just got our own UHD65 for our demos so we will verify. The laser can go down to 50% power so it should allow even better blacks. We hope to start second round testing by mid November. Contrast is better because the brightness is higher, blacks appear to be about the same at 100% power. Will test 50% in the future.

Hello Ted, How does the HD content (either streaming contents or blue ray disks ) up-scaling works on UHZ65 and Sony 365 ? . Especially the Sony blue-ray player is up scaling the HD content to 4K.

The upscaling of HD content on both the UHZ65 and Sony VPL-VW365 is very good, although we have not done in depth comparison between them on their upscaling capabilities....yet! Also keep in mind that there are several places you could potentially have the upscaling take place, a 4k/UHD Blu-ray player, a receiver, or the projector (or TV). You can have the Sony Blu-ray (or other player) do the upscaling, or you can have them send out the native resolution on the disc. I.e. dvd:480p, Blu-ray: 1080p, UHD Blu-ray: 4k. The same is true with many receivers as well, you can have them do the scaling or just have them pass through the native resolution, and have the projector do the upscaling. Where you have it done, really depends on what and where you want the scaling to occur. Typically you would want whatever device has the best video processing and upscaling capabilities to do it, whether that is the Blu-ray player, the receiver, or the projector. -Mike Bollinger

When you measured brightness in the video, the UHZ65 was more than 10% brighter than the Sony, but in the comparison diagram, the 65 is rated lower than the Sony. Did I miss something? The measurements in the vid were after calibration right?

So, the brightness measurements were clearly in favor of the UHZ65, however if you look closely at the charts you will see the Z is slightly higher. We now have our own production version of the projector and it is even brighter than our pre-release version. We will revise our chart even more based on our new soon to done comparison with the new Sony VPLVW285ES projector which we should be getting in the next couple of weeks.

We did not test the input lag, but the UHD65 is not a good choice because of it "pure engine" delay if you are a serious gamer. I would recommend the Sony or perhaps even the UHD60 (no pure engine delay) AVS forum post shows: " UHD60 ($1999) has variable 33ms-50ms input lag (2-3 frames @ 60fps). It supports full speed HDMI and all. Supposedly fantastic for gaming, and the fastest 4K UHD projector under $7000." Just not sure how accurate that info is.

Glad you asked, we just posted the UHD65 and UHZ65 comparison charts (Theo-Charts) at tvspecialists.com/projector-comparison-charts-theo-charts/ so if you look carefully you will see that the UHZ65 has better color, higher contrast, much brighter light output (better HDR) and of course a laser good for 20,000 hrs to half life. Worth of UHZ65 projector depends on your budget, screen size and level of enthusiasm. Keep in mind the only other 4K HT projectors are upwards of $25,000! So yes, way worth it if your budget allows.

Since we represent both we are trying to be as fair as possible, however, the Optoma was a real eye opener and they do a remarkable image for the money we would agree. I ended up getting the UHZ65 personally as I love the fact that the laser does not drop 20 -30% of its brightness like lamps do as well.

Sony has a more true to color while the Optoma has better darker level details. In brighter scenes the Sony has better details. It appears all the prjector reviews I've seen. All projectors have their plus and minus. At this point you got to look at price point and what you get. I think the Optoma overall has decent picture for the price.

Yes, if you need 3D or high speed gaming with low latency then without question the Sony is the way to go. If you are just looking for a great 4K image at the best cost then the Optoma is hard to beat. There is already a good review at ProjectorCentral.com but basically if you need portability and do not need very much brightness (770 lumen range for decent color) the LG may be an option for you. If you have the room for the UHZ65 which can output a usable 3,000 lumens it is a far more practical choice for most home theaters.

Great question, even though we try and calibrate to within a few degrees of each other and they do look very close in person (even when Kris Deering, a national respected calibrated was here) the camera shows even a few degress difference and we do try and point that out during the comparison when we see it. Always best is to see in person side by side whenever possible.

It's fine for casual gaming but a little slow for those who do competitive on line gaming. You really want something under 30 or 40 ms for serious gaming and this only gets to about 65 or 70 with all processing (Pure engine) turned off.

On off contrast is very different from simultaneous contrast or on-screen actual contrast. DLP projectors if using a good high contrast chip and very good light control in the light engine have a potential to do very good simultaneous actual contrast. The closest spec would be ANSI contrast but most manufacture do not publish this specification.

Jvc needs to work harder for a native 4k model that doesn’t cost a fortune without a reason. Sony got it years ago...

No question, Sony has stunning images on their displays. However I would tend to disagree with you a little, in that my experience on most of their displays (certainly TVs) has been that they are very competitive, and in some cases lower cost for a better image than their competition. That isn’t to say that they don’t have a few premium pieces that are expensive, but even in those, they are not the most expensive on the market. While they are proud of their projectors, I’ve yet to come across anyone who has been disappointed. -Mike Bollinger

It was pretty hard to see the baseline black level difference in the video comparison. Especially on the test pattern comparisons, I couldn't even tell a difference between blacks because they were exposed differently. Maybe you can do a follow up where you over expose the optoma so we can see the black level difference, and then also on the other end under expose it so we can see the white level difference. Although probably still different in person, at least I'd be able to tell baseline difference between blacks and then white intensity. Were they actually that close in person? It'd be nice to You could tell the optoma might have higher ANSI contrast just because the white levels are so much greater on an average scene.

Michael Liu, we understand it is hard to really see the differences in the video, however there was definitely a difference in person but interestingly enough on some scenes the Sony could do better blacks, while on other scenes they looked very similar. I'm not sure that we will have time to do another video on those two projectors, however we are expecting some of Sony's newest projectors soon and will probably do a video comparison with the uhz65 and one of those projectors soon. It’s not quite that simple, the projectors have been calibrated to maximize shadow details as well as white details without washing them out or crushing black detail, simply turning up brightness will cause loss of detail in darker areas or bringing up contrast can wash out white detail. -Mike Bollinger

Jim Cameron great question first of all you kind of have to take brightness ratings with a grain of salt some manufacturers such as Sony tend to be very conservative in their brightness ratings while other manufacturers sometimes we wonder how they get their brightness ratings. In this case although the Optoma is actually brighter than the Sony, because of the way our eyes see, a 3000 Lumen brightness compared to a 2000 Lumen brightness with all other things being equal would not look significantly brighter to the eye in most cases. For example a projector that is double the brightness so for example 6000 lumens vs. 3000 lumens does not look twice as bright. With that said in person it was a more noticeable difference then it appears in the video. Second we were actually able to get the Optoma uhd65 looking brighter than it did in the video afterwards with a few additional adjustments that we found, and we were already very familiar with the Sony as we'd had it for quite some time and had the opportunity to get it looking as good as it possibly could. -Mike Bollinger/TVS Pro

TVS Pro thanks I visit your site already yesterday, i own since 2013 VW1000 (CINEMIKE TUNING version) and to my eyes the nativ picture quality of DLP 4k is as sharp as 4k nativ SONY incl. its REALITY CREATION wow and even more sharpness than my CINEMIKE JVC X7000 (have 2) for my INFITEC/DOLBY 3D system at my homecinema because of DLP 4K 4.000.000 pixels panel vs. JVC e-shift 2 mio panel, i am planning to buy UHZ65 only for 4k UHD/HDR and hope because of LASER for deeper black + more nativ contrast than my VW1000, my 16:9 mult elect..screen size in diagonal is about 138 inch wich is 3 meter width i hope i will get a realy bright HDR picture with UHZ65 its 3000 lumen

I think you will be very happy with the UHZ65, especially with HDR, it really shines. In our showroom we have a Stewart masking screen that will open to 130" 2.35:1 screen and we have filled the image (with excess going off the screen) and it looked really good, that is about a 119" width, which should be about the same as your screen. -Mike Bollinger/ TVS Pro

MIKE BOLLINGER thanks for your feedback, so the 119 inch width HDR image with UHZ65 is in your opinion bright (LASER output on 100%) enough? my final question about UHZ65, even on 1080p standard BR deeper black level + better nativ contrast than SONY VW1000/1100 (same contrast/black level) wich is far away from my JVC X7000 or any JVC DLA X projector? at first i wanted VW760 (VW885 US) but now i am going for 3000 lumen DLP 4k, UHZ65 coming out next week around december 15th, EURO price in US dollars 5.800$ but over there 4.500$, thanks for your time. cheers from munich germany

TVSPro. according to the sony site VW365ES is not even 2000 lumen bright only 1500 lumen the half of the brightness of OPTOMA so we have now 3000 vs.1500 lumen so the UHZ should be much brighter than 365ES!

Hey Jim, You are correct, Sony rates it as 1,500 lumens. However you have to understand first that Sony is typically very conservative in their rated brightness specs, for example, their rated 1,500 lumens in the VPL-VW365ES outperforms and is visibly brighter than Epson's ProCinema 6040 at full brightness which is rated at 2,500 lumens, and that is not to say that Epson doesn't perform to it's rated output, rather Sony is over performing and is rated very conservatively. So it is really not a stretch to compare this projector to the Optoma UHZ65. The other factor is they are in the same price category, as is the VPL-VW285ES which replaces the VPL-VW365ES. I purchased uhz 65 after this review. I thought optoma uhz65 image is really closed to Sony. But I don't think that now. I have a sharp xv-z 17000. Even though sv-z17000 is only 1080p and less bright than optoma uhz65 the color is much more natural real and no noise . Optoma uhz 65 is very bright (and bright skin tone) and 4k detail is super and long bulb life but other technologies are lower than other companies. Color looks not natural - iit is like cartoon color (in my view) - I tried to set up the images for more than 2 hour but not satisfied. only 4k source has no noise. 1080p or less source have noticeable noise in my eyes. And In Sharp projector I never noticed rainbow effect. But in this projector has Noticeable Rainbow effect. This RE bothers me - if you enjoy dancing or action much - I don't recommend this projector. I searched uhd65 - that has rainbow effect too. I'm going to return the uhz 65 and I will purchase other brand.

It all depends on your settings. Out of the box, the color is way too much and the black levels are not very good. We have found that only a combination of settings get the max out of the blacks and contrast. The color quality comes with basic or professional calibration. When both are set at their optimum we have yet to find a projector that can hold it own with this projector under $5K. Rainbow effect is very good on this projector but yes, there are some people that are very sensitive to it, others cannot see it even if you try and show them, so very individual sensitivities.

Thank You for your Kind detailed answer. - I think you are right as TV specialist. I know my view is personal and subjective. But there is some truth. Maybe I will get better picture later. but main reason to return the projector is RE. I watch mostly dancing- even little every body moving - I can see it.

We normally include a 4 page "Optimum UHZ65 Settings Guide" along with a Spears & Munsil basic calibration guide. Since you may already have the projector I would highly recommend this disc and do a basic calibration by following their instructions. You should be able to get the color very close to being accurate and then you can do slight adjustments to your personal preferences.

Full calibration will vary from projector to projector so it really needs to be done on a specific projector. As far as optimum settings we have found a combination of settings that will achieve a very improved black level and much higher contrast and a full fade to total black so technically infinite contrast. We hope to do a full video on this in the future as it is a process and requires interaction with other settings.

Please see the "IMPORTANT" at the description under the video. The dark blue we later learned was due to the camera IR cut filter range and is not what we saw in person. Please see the newer 385ES and the UHZ65 comparison for a more realistic comparison where we used a different camera.

To me the Sony looks very " soap opera " the Optoma looks natural

In person they both have very natural motion depending on which settings you choose. The real surprise is how well the Optoma is able to compete detail wise and on most scenes contrast wise for less cost and with a laser so no real brightness change over time. You're right, in regards to the UHD65, but the UHZ65 (laser version of UHD65) is still at $4499. Official dealers have contracts where they cannot sell or advertise prices below a certain price or they can and may possibly lose their dealership status. So if you are seeing a UHZ65 lower than $4499, as of today, I would be extremely wary as to why.

Why Sony is over exposed (white's burn'd out.) in still shots ??? I think those dont do proper justice to sony, in this comparison.

Great question, if we expose for highlights on the Sony then the Optoma is underexposed and crushing blacks. In this comparison they are in their closest brightness modes and then compared. If this could be done on an HDR display with out internet compression you might be able to see the full range. You are very observant and on some scenes the Sony is brighter on some the Optoma is brighter, it was very interesting to see.
