We tested nine different projectors to find the best one suited for most situations. There are a lot of choices when it comes to projectors. Laser or lamp-based? DLP or LCD? 1080 or 4K? However, the most important things are: how easy it is to set up, audio, image quality, and price. In this video, Alix Diaconis shows us the best projectors of 2020.

The Verge - how much is the average cost of a replacement bulb though, and approximately how long do they last? That was the problem with the projector that I had about a decade ago, and it would start to distort the image over time with colors that shouldn’t be there (not sure if they burned into the lens or the bulb itself was the problem).

I have a 65" OLED TV with stunning image quality. Better than all the local movie theatres in my opinion. But. Your point that the picture isn't there is also true of TV because they only ever display small people and small cars and small buildings. You always know it's only a TV. I like both projectors and TV but for different reasons. Maybe a 120" OLED TV with cinematic motion and we'd all be happy!

My roommate and I scored a cheap enterprise grade projector from goodwill when I was in college. The resolution was poor but it was super bright and threw a huge image in our apartment. Before that we had nice TV's, but after trying out the projector, we threw them all out for the giant picture. Guests loved it and it made split screen videogames so much easier to play. Having a giant picture really is magic and I totally agree about the texture. Im thinking about spending an irresponsible amount on an LCD projector this black friday

I agree with you on the Epson having the best picture. My advice though for a super quiet Epson operation is to get a high lumens one (e.g. 3400 lumens) and set it to ECO mode (produces around 2,110 lumens on ECO) That way, you'll hopefully get to enjoy a super quiet operation + bright and colorful image of the Epson 3-LCD tech.

Intriguing. A couple of questions... If the screen is white, how does a projector produce deep black colors? I never really thought about it despite all these years of going to the movies. Also, if the projector is set up behind the couch, basically right next to your head, isn’t the fan noise going to drive you crazy?
@NeeonDeeon
@NeeonDeeon 4 жыл бұрын
The short answer is they don't. The color black can't be reproduced by digital projectors as black is an absence of light. This is why movie theaters do everything they can to keep the room as dark as possible. Environments where light can't be completely controlled (such as a living room) one could use a gray screen to artificially deepen the perceived black levels and enhance contrast.

I currently bought my epson 2150 on sale for 500 dollars. It's the best purchase I have ever made. The projector is outstanding with its contrast, color, and brightness. I can easily watch football through out the day with some sun light. Then at night the image is crisp and bright for movies. There's sometimes with peak bright scenes I have to look away because it can be so bright. The epson 2150 knocks it out of the park. The big onlydown side its not a 4k projector. I don't personally find it to be a huge downside. In my experience I could barely notice the difference between uhd and HD. I have been a editing video for years. The only differences I can notice is usually the details in close ups shots. So honsetly I'm sticking with 1080p projectors until 4k projectors can come down in price. They are currently starting at a thousand for the cheapest one.

The screen is the most important thing for projectors. Doesn't matter how expensive the projector is, if you are just projecting on a wall, you are not getting the most out of the projector. the VAVA really needs an ALR (ambient light rejecting) screen to shine. if you pair the two together, you will get the closest to an OLED tv, the picture quality is simply amazing at 100"-120". You can watch anything during the day time with all the blinds open and still get a great image. however a decent ALR PET crystal screen is going to cost you $800-1200. I highly recommend you test this out and post up another review. ALR screens come in UST (ultra short throw) and long throw format so make sure you pair the right screen type with the right projector. Even super cheap $200 1080p native projectors on Amazon will look fantastic with an ALR screen. The best OEM ALR screens are mostly made in Taiwan and assembled in China in my experience. someone on youtube took a 10 yr old $50 projector outside during the day time and pointed it at an ALR screen and the image looked amazing under bright sunlight. he painted that screen himself using $120/gallon ALR screen paint. will be a nice little art project for yourself :)

@pebui
@pebui 4 жыл бұрын
I really like the BenQ HT2550 on a 120" screen for movies as their color reproduction is the best in its class. Also BenQ tend to have the better options for people who want to calibrate the best image. Optomas are great for the price and Epsons are good to use all around. For people who want to play video games though, The Optomas tend to have the best latency upfront and BenQ's have just as good gaming modes. As for lighting, good black out curtains help a lot and you only really need to control for direct sunlight on the screen as screens are made to reflect light really well. Indirect light from the walls aren't as hard on the screen and you can control for it by painting the walls a darker tone or even putting up pictures, posters, etc. Mounting projectors to hang from the ceiling is really easy with a ceiling mount. Just have to measure things out where you need to do some math to account for the throw distances and giving room to let you focus the image. The closer you put it to it's shortest range, the brighter the image but smaller the picture and vice versa. Ceiling mounting helps a lot with reducing the noise from the projector and takes up less space. Some mounts hook the projector to the mount so it's easy to take on and off to move like to set up in another room or outside for night time outdoor movie nights. Also those who want to go projector you really need to have a speaker system for stereo or surround sound given the projector is basically a mono speaker and won't add any bass. Even a sound bar would suffice.

@@CanadianSkylights No. She was saying the screen she had was 80" because that was the minimum the projector would project. Projectors go up much higher depending on how far back you can put it and zoom. In most cases 300 inches is the limit. She was showing much bigger images on her wall without the screen. Also consider the cost of a projector at 700 bux to an 80 inch tv. Big difference in price.

I’ve thinking of getting a projector after seeing that 75 to 85 inch 4K TVs were so much more expensive than a 65 inch tv. I can get a 1080p projector as my big movie screen and the 65 inch as my gaming screen.

Unless you have a hot room with a lot of heat around your projector causing the fan to ramp up, you dont really hear it. Also don't have it next to your head you will definitely hear it then lol.

There's a sneaky big problem withe the Epson (and all LCD projectors), and that is that when you replace the bulb, you'll never get the same brightness again. I've heard that from pros who service these things, and they always explain to me how that can be, and I never understand it -- but enough people have said it that I have no reason to disbelieve them.
@JesusSavesSinners
@JesusSavesSinners Жыл бұрын
The solution is when you replace the Bulb you replace the Bulb housing too. Epson bulbs are not expensive. When the Bulb burns out it damages the Bulb housing. You will lose No Brightness if you replace both the Bulb and the Bulb housing.
@CinemaDemocratica
@CinemaDemocratica Жыл бұрын
@@JesusSavesSinners With respect, I believe that's incorrect. The polarizers are not part of the housing and they begin to degrade immediately from the first time the unit is turned on -- which might not be the same thing as saying that you can see the difference, but officially you can't restore the original lumens rating on an LCD projector by replacing the bulb, with or without the housing. I have that on three independent authorities, two of whom service projectors for a living so I think it's pretty solid.

@Alix Diaconis been enjoying it. They don't tell you in these videos how audio works, and this one was the only one in the price range that had an audio out so you could hook up a sound bar or system. Not an expert there or know how most systems work but that definitely helps me in having a good experience. Easy to adjust, focus, get a good screen size, and I haven't had any issues with illumination or sound. Can't wait to upgrade eventually but it's a good starter if one has never used a projector in a home, like me, or on a budget.

Glad to see the coverage. But some things were strange. Laser/bulb/led are light sources. Dlp, lcd, Lcos are imaging sources. You need one item from each category to get an picture. --- The shades of color are not determined by the rec2020 gamut. It is just a bigger bucket. The shades of color are determined by grayscale and color temperature. -- I learned something new. I have never been able to understand why manufacturers include a speaker in a projector. I thought that was a carryover from business presentation machines. But now I see it's a feature people use for watching movies, too. But what's really cool about some of these projectors is they can send the audio via Bluetooth to a blue tooth speaker by your screen that is going to sound ten times better and cost less than 100 bucks. Heck I'll bet most people watching this already have a Bluetooth speaker. --- Ps the VAVA doesn't really have that contrast ratio except that it can turn off its laser on a completely blank black image. More practical is the contrast when the laser is on, at which point it's contrast is very similar to a lamp based projector.

@@system_eneve yeah 4K is a must if you are going to project anything over 100". I have it setup for a 120" right now on a wall but ordered a screen already, just haven't set it up yet. I haven't plug in my PS4 Pro yet but I will definitely check it out this weekend. HDR does make the picture look nicer but at the expense of brightness. To me 4K by itself is fine with me though. I think you need a much brighter projector or TV to really enjoy HDR properly. Yeah the sound coming out of here is pretty awesome and loud. I do wish they would've integrated a sub channel within the projector though. It seems big enough to do so. I need to get a longer HDMI cable for ARC though so I could hook it up to my Atmos setup. Maybe an optical cable would be more feasible though.

I just shot it on a wall and actually liked that best....after getting a 100” screen I felt it wasn’t big enough. Big enough for a full screen image but not for a widescreen movie with horizontal black bars 🙁. Need to go 120” IMO. A maasive projector image is way better than even an 80” TV

the biggest shift in preojectors is the dlp technology getting cheaper, so still looking at lcd ones is strange for me. I got Xiaomi Mijia for 400% on Ali, and it surprised me with the contrast and quality (plus it has its own brains, can work on itself, connect to wifi, play youtube, browse internet etc, you can stream ur phone or ipad to it). So why start your talk with 700% if the main new theme is affordability. And you dont even mention another interesting form-factor - mini dlp projectors, they cost around 100-200$ and are a size of a power bank, they have their own battery - you can take it wherever. Quality is lower of course, but it can be quite powerful.
