I knew where she hid our Christmas gifts so I secretly sneaked the record out of the album sleeve.. replaced it with another... There is just something special about this band that is so completely different from any other group that's ever made music. They are much more than just prog rock. Their music is as unique as can possibly be, and it will be played long after they've passed on. I would be extremely proud of what Genesis has done over their 40 years if I were one of them. It's a blast to watch these videos too, to get this insight into these albums.

Nursery Cryme was the first Genesis album I heard.....i was about 15 years old at the time. 'The Musical Box' grabbed my ears right from the start and the album went from one amazing song to the next. I spent hours looking at the album illustrations and re-reading the lyrics.Very surreal and so original. 'For Absent Friends' and 'Harlequin' are simply beautiful. The power and majesty in 'The Fountain of Salmacis' is amazing. And enter Steve Hackett on guitar and Phil Collins on drums! Masterful.

I abandoned Genesis after Wind and Wuthering, and the departure of Steve Hackett, who brought such a yearning, mystical element to the group, and also could make it explode on a dime - like in "The Musical Box"! I love "Lamb", and "Selling England", but there was an unpolished, darker, and I might say- feminine/chaos quality to "Nursery Cryme" that keeps me tethered to this FANTASTIC record! And the arrival of Phil Collins, and Hackett took EVERYTHING to a higher, more powerful level.

Mark Darnell abandoning Genesis after W&W was a mistake, there’s still plenty to like on some of the later albums especially Duke, I do acknowledge they lost something when Steve left, that extra bit of darkness maybe, but there was still some lovely stuff afterwards, songs like heathaze off Duke, Dodo off abacab and burning rope off ATTWT , all great tunes.

Not sure which album I heard first as walked into my older brother's bedroom one lunchtime whilst I was at school (age 15 - over 30 year's ago) and picked up a Genesis album, layed on his bed with his headphones on and was late for school. I did this most days for ages. I had never heard anything like it and felt it was my little secret when I went back to school. Every album I played was amazing whether it was Gabriel or Collins. The seeds of The Musical Box chords came from Anthony Phillips as well. There are demos of his playing parts that would eventually become that song. A shame he left after Trespass.

My favorite Genesis album always and forever. I am a bit surprised that Peter thinks this is darker than Trespass because that album is very gloomy IMO where Nursery Cryme is brighter and more buoyant. Either way, a wonderful album and great line-up of very talented musicians.

+ManifoldCuriosity I think each is dark in their own way. This one has a lot of dark themes like death, ghosts, rape, suicide, etc, and I think the overall sound (music wise) is darker. I find Trespass lighter in the sense of the music... I listen to it and it sounds young and nostalgic... all the cute flute lines, the melodies, etc; but I think it is very dark in terms of most of the lyrics being quite depressive. It sounds very introspective and sad, like the mind of a very young person with lots of sadness, regrets, fears and anger. I think Pete's voice is very expressive of all that, in that album particularly.

+TheRedfire555 If I remember, he said a similar thing about Supper's Ready: how he wanted to have an instrumental section after the big keyboard solo, you know when all this long chords come in (the "666 is no longer alone..." part), he wanted those to be on their own for contrast. So Pete, as he apparently used to do, recorded his vocals when he was alone and then presented Tony and the others with the finished thing. But on that occasion too, Tony realised it did sound better with Pete's vocals on that part. I'm seeing a pattern here XD

I think people latch onto the early stuff of genesis because there is a more dream like quality to their music then than the pop commercial outfit they ended up being. Alright it can be perceived as whimsical, arty farty victoriana, but there was an ethereal quality to the early albums that was never again captured in the later Collins years. I have time for both periods, but, if you had to nail me down to a preferable era it would definitely be the earlier stuff, it justo had that dreamy qualit

After being dismissive of Genesis for all of my 52 years, I, at the behest of a fellow prog rock aficionado, recently decided to give their early work a look. I hadn’t until now because of a prejudice formed from the ‘Phil Collins at-the-helm’ radio stuff (and I think understandably so), but having always admired Peter Gabriel’s solo stuff, my mates recommendation had ripened the little bit of curiosity I’d always had about their early work. Anyway, wow. I started with Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound, and am now working through Nursery Cryme and ‘The Lamb’, and these 4 albums are absolutely brilliant. Genesis, with Peter Gabriel on vocals and Steve Hackett on guitar, are a wondrous combination and an entirely different beast to the Mark II version. They have dominated my turntable for the last 3 months and I can’t get enough of their virtuosity. Indeed, Phil Collins, the drummer, has more than redeemed Phil Collins the shrill singer. His work on these records is mind blowing and he is now forgiven for the million and one times I’ve suffered his wretched “Su Su Sudio” in supermarket aisles.

The impact Genesis had in the early 70's is hard to describe. Their music was like nothing else I have heard before. After Peter left, it was a different band, a clear departure from their earlier direction, so for us, older fans, there was no confusing the two. If you start in reverse order, you really need to forget these two bands had the same name.

Oh, we hear ya on that "Sussudio" shite. As much as I love their body of work overall, there are nevertheless some tracks that I NEVER play (e.g. W&W's "Your Own Special Way", ABACAB's "Whodunnit"). I also despise Phil's solo track "I Don't Care Anymore". However, Phil is STILL my favourite drummer.... over and above Neil Peart, and I daresay even Bill Bruford (an extremely close second). The sound of the album is more organic than their others, one ''feels'' the instruments better, it is like entering an enchanted world. It is a great example of artists that try to find for the first time together their best musical ability and possibilities and actually find it. That eagerness and quest is in each song here. This is that peak for them. Eg the track Seven Stones is one of the best songs ever - driven by haunting deep guitar layers with mellotron, steered by fabulous drums, with great melody. The album is sometimes pretty extreme; some of their rougher sounds and dynamics here came back much later to music, eg in metal and grunge, while some of the more delicate sounds here are almost classical. Very very special.

Tony Banks nailed what was good about early Genesis - " the lack of repetition. " Phil Collins mentions Family and their debut album, Music In A Doll's House ( an absolute classic btw - check it out if you haven' t ) is very much an inspiration for Genesis and the Gabriel's Chapman-esque (ish ) vocals.

I was 14 when "Nursery Crime" was released in 1971, and I remember that on initial listen, my world changed instantly. What struck me the most was that I didn't consider Genesis to be a Rock Band. They were something unique from somewhere else; a band sent back by time machine and recorded onto Edison wax cylinders. They were both behind and beyond the world circa 1971. Listening to Tony and Peter kind of makes you get an idea of what the atmosphere must have been at their rehearsals/composition sessions. I think both had their ego and it had its effect on their relationship. But I like that they still sound nice about each other. For some reason, I don't think they are just being nice for the camera; I believe them. Some off-topic thoughts (my 1st time hearing the guys talk, here): On earlier comments some people comment on how slow Pete talks. For me, as a foreign speaker who has trouble understanding spoken English, this is a blessing, lol. I agree with who said it's because he tries too hard to craft his sentences, as it shows in his writing. Also, his (spoken) voice is really pleasant and soothing to my ear. I also found Steve's voice (more high pitched) beautiful and his accent quite understandable for my poor skills. Of all 5, I have the most trouble understanding Mike; I don't know if it's his pronunciation or what. Tony would be clearer to me, if only he didn't speak that fast XD I have to keep pausing to let the words sink in and then I understand him ok. As for Phil, same issue, he speaks a bit fast and mumbles a bit, then I lose him. I find everyone's accent very attractive (I was drooling over the keyboard here XD). Ok, now you know a Spanish-speaker point of view ^_^

Gabriel speaks elegantly like a poet. Phil is quick tongued, like his wit. Hackett is articulate but so laid back he almost puts me to sleep. :D

+funkster007 Thank you very much! I studied some English phonetics in college, but it was totally focused on RP English. Still, the year I did study (before I dropped the major) gave me a little bit of sound awareness, which has been a real mind opener and helped me ever since to better learn languages. These sort of topics are very interesting to me. Phonetics, accents, pronunciation... plus Genesis? Count me in, haha =P I hadn't listened to this in a while. Yes, more or less I still feel the same way. Damn Tony speaks fast! It is also true that, when interviewed, some people tend to speak more clearly, mumble less, enunciate better, etc. Maybe Peter and Steve just speak more carefully in front of the camera than they would in everyday life; and maybe the other three speak a bit closer to what they sound like everyday, like just having a chat with the interviewer. Perhaps; I don't know =)

It makes sense now: Trick of the Tail was all the bits that Tony 'wasn't allowed' to put on the Lamb, plus some new work ;-) Judging from what PG says at the start of this clip (and elsewhere in this series). ' Keyboardfull' songs like Entangled or squonk would never have made the cut for the Lamb. Tony was involved in every song on Trick.

peter always seems very happy reminiscing and talking about these old albums. makes me wonder why he's never wanted to do a reunion tour before they're all too old. he clearly enjoyed his time with the band. if it doesn't happen within the next 10 years or so, it never will. maybe less considering the trouble phil's been having with his hands. i doubt that will get better. very sad this has never happened.

4:00 Phil mentions the family song that had the same rolling drum part in that needs a good set of drumming feet, but it was actually called the weavers answer rather than just the weaver. I love the early Genesis albums, they had a magic that sort of got lost on the later stuff, even though they still wrote some great stuff later as well. Not many bands have a back catalogue as great as Genesis is, maybe Jethro Tull and floyd, and king Crimson of course.

I saw Genesis in Philly back around '90-'91. Friends chided me into going because by then the band wasn't the band I liked any more. The saving grace was they did a medley of their early music, so even though it was Phil singing it was the highlight of the show for me. I was ready to leave after they started with the "I Can't Dance," pop stuff.

@wardka Yes, Charisma's Mad Hatter may as well have been the official mascot of the entire Bristish prog rock movement in my opinion, especially re: Genesis and certain other Victorian-era-influenced groups like Jethro Tull; that particular picture of the Hatter (copied from Tenniel's illustrations) just really crystallizes the spirit of the genre.

good point. even with their 2007 tour it was very cool to see them playing together again, but the actual performances weren't up to par with what they used to do. most of that is because of phil. you could tell his hand was already bothering him on the drums then. he often had a pained look on his face and made a lot of mistakes, and he didn't have the range he used to when singing. he just seemed generally worn out. 40 years of constant touring will do that to anybody.

Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot was my first Genesis LPs. They were released together as a double album with a new cover and with a title “The Best… Genesis” It must have been around 1976. I already knew and liked Pink Floyd, Yes, ELP, Procol Harum, and King Crimson. Once I listened to Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot, I was hooked for life. I don’t care much about the Genesis albums after Wind and Wuthering. After Gabriel and Hackett left, their musical style changed and moved away from my musical taste (but reached to many more people than early Genesis). There is big debate between people who love the Gabriel -Hackett era and those who love the Collins era, but it should not be a debate. Different tastes. Like Chocolate and Vanilla cream. Should not be compared. Everyone knows what they like and prefer.

Then I was "lucky" to get invited to a live concert (The lamb lies down on Broadway) and boy, I got blast totally away... Later I listened again to Nursery crime (And The Musical Box) and I realized that in fact the musical box is a master piece of all time! I always thought the Charisma Mad Hatter logo on the -- on the paper thingy that goes around the hole in the middle of the vinyl. (What did we call that again? The label?) Anyway, the Mad Hatter was the perfect image. If the Mad Hatter had a band, it would be early Genesis and he would have had a singing voice just like Gabriel's.

No he didn't. Yes he did it before Eddie Van Halen, but there is a video out there , from what appears to be the 40's or 50's of a guy playing an acoustic guitar using that technique. Hackett also used that technique on the solo from Dancing with the Moonlit Knight.

It's striking to me how they all seem so nonchalant and detached from this extraordinary musical world they created together, almost as if it was done by others so there's no emotional investment or attachment. So very British of them I suppose, but I also think all great artists move forward, away from the work that they create, and "let it go" so they can continue to progress creatively.

I believe the reason for a lot of the tension & resentments, other than "fighting about music all day" as Mike states in one of his interviews, started when Peter's Daughter was born breech & very sick., He did what any responsible father would have done. His family needed him, period. I saw an interview w/ peter on behind the music & I think he may still hold a bit of a grudge.... Peter: "When I told them I was leaving the band, it was as if someone had just told them ..... they were going to kill their child"????

not sure he would still hold a grudge. didnt genesis bail him out of a difficult financial situation years later. i seem to remember him saying something somewhere where he had a lot of room for the guys

yes they sure did help him out of financial difficulties in the early 80's!! You're right :)

+linda donmore Both things are probably true. For them all, when Peter left, it must have been a very hard situation. They were all very intense about Genesis and their relationship, the group as a close-knit unit, so I guess it must have felt as some sort of divorce. It's normal, I think, that they still have regrets and sad feelings about it. It doesn't change the fact that they can still be friends. So I think it's possible to both love each other and have some resentments at the same time...

@mherrenschmidt they admit that there was a lot of trouble in the band, and the more time passes, the more open they show and talk about it --- but sure nothing really vicious

This will upset many fans but I still can’t believe they went from making sublime music to the dreadful pop crap after Duke which was the last Genesis LP imo. Still, I’m grateful for the epics they did do.

Peter seems very shy
