"Oracle Door" solo - Muscle Tough Live in Asbury Park 8/24/23 at The Wonder Bar.
I liked how this solo came out, and I figured I would share something here on YT like I usually do on IG (@Friendshipwizard).
For anyone who caught my rig rundown*, this song is a great example of "The Switch" where Ross Bellenoit and I switch octaves; he assumes the bass role and I take over melodic stuff.
I wrote this section of the tune to have a wild modal/chromatic playground to improvise in.
The interval set for the melodic theme is 1-b2-3-#4-5#5
The lack of defining 7th and the built-in chromatic cluster allows me to blend whole-tone, lydian dominant, and phyrgian dominant together freely - heck, even Ionian licks fly; anything goes!
It's really fun to play over, especially with my bandmates being so attentive and creative. There are a few versions of us playing this song here on YT, so you can check out the different ways I approach the modal blending.
Happy practicing! If you like this, let me know and I might add clips more regularly. Thanks!
