I watched the Miracle on Ice live on TV as it happened. I was also there for the past 30 years of sports upsets in US sports - be it Mike Tyson getting punched out by Buster Douglas or App State beating Michigan and a hundred other sports events. I watch all sports, the Olympics, football/soccer, but most of all cricket. And USA beating Pakistan is like North Alabama or *SUNY Buffalo beating the Dallas Cowboys*. Not beating Alabama, but a professional NFL team. It's that ridiculous. This whole world cup has been ridiculous. NZ losing to Afghanistan? Bangladesh losing to Sri Lanka? Canada beating Ireland? I mean, is there like wholesale match fixing going on? This is just so improbable and beyond our imagination to concieve happening!

That is EXTREME... that is what makes it an upset. But New Zealand are a world class top tier test nation... historically, if you look at their games, some of the upsets THEY have scored, some of the their all time greats... should have beaten Afghanistan. I have my doubts. My son and I (Americans with nearly zero cricket knowledge, but excited by the team's success) drove 18 hours to see US v. Ireland in Florida. I suspect we are exactly the kind of people US Cricket wants to interest in the game. We arrived at the stadium at 9:30 AM and the weather was gorgeous -- bright sun, light breeze, warm. The game was supposed to start at 10:30 AM. . . but it never did. At 1:30 PM it started raining and the match was canceled. We sat here for 4 hours in the blazing sun and somehow the officials and grounds crew were not able to get the game started. This may be common in cricket, but honestly, I seriously doubt potential new American fans or advertisers are going to adopt a game that is evidently so unfriendly to fans. There seemed too be no sense of urgency ate all about starting the game. On the way to Florida we were talking about going to New York for a Round of 8 game. But we were fooled once and will be looking to the Olympics for our new sports.

Cricket will take off like crazy if there is a good media-savvy way to communicate the rules of play, the scoring, what the heck is a century, why can it be dangerous for a batter up against a good bowler, what's up with the little wooded balancey things on top of the sticks behind the batter, why doesn't anyone wear gloves becausse that ball looks really hard, what is an "out" and why does it take three days to play a match? These and other burning questions from American sports fans, who may, or may not, go along with the rule to exclude "the chain gang" from the NFL. (Answer THAT question, cricket fans!).

Those sticks are called 'stumps' and that little wooden balancy things on the top of it, are called 'Bails' & when the ball hits the stumps, the batsman is considered OUT once the Bails fall from the stumps. A batsman is considered "out" when the opponent ends their innings. It can happen in a number of ways like: Caught: A fielder catches the ball after it's hit by the bat before it touches the ground. Bowled: The same stumps and bails thing. Leg before wicket (lbw): When the batsman leg comes in between the stumps and the ball. Run out: The fielders hit the stumps with the ball before the batsman reach while running for runs. Stumped: The bowler or fielder hits the wicket with the ball, dismissing the batsman. Hit wicket: The batsman hits the stumps accidentally with their bat or body. There are more ways when a batsman gets out but i've mentioned only the common ones. Their are mainly three forms of cricket matches: T20, OneDay and test matches. Test matches take more than a day, it can take upto 4 days. OneDay matches as the name suggests, it takes only one day and T20 matches takes just 5-6 hours to finish.

Not sure if they get sponsorship money but they can't play in the IPL which is where the big bucks are. I'm curious how many people born and bred in the USA play for the USA cricket team. There seems to be a lot of non American accents in the team and in the stadium supporting the team. The chants of USA, USA whenever the home team belted a 6 or took a wicket leave no doubt as to the crowd's allegiance and that's pretty cool!. Its just vastly different to the diversity of crowd, I'm used to seeing chanting that. Hopefully, the game and coverage will start to take off in the USA, at least the T20 variant.
