That's a big part of the reason why this show is so fantastic. It does something that most media fails to do-show you the good, the bad, and the ugly in everyone, and still humanize them. Violent offenders, skinheads, people who can be real pieces of shit... but still, at the end of the day, people. I've rarely seen shows that treats their characters with this much nuance and complexity, truly a television masterpiece.

As someone who rooted for Piper and has been very patient with her until season 3, I think it's time for her to face the consequence. I can see why Maria would do that since she thought Piper stole her date. Although the scene was painful, let's not forget that in prison you usually do a favor or don't fuck with anyone, Piper was rude, insensitive many times and in this season after what she did to Stella she wanted to play be a gangster. That's why Alex survived prison very well, she was calm, charismatic and didn't want to bother anyone unlike Piper who always thought of something stupid, this scene is simply a consequence of her actions, if I were Maria, I would do it too the same to someone who extended my sentence.

When Piper and a number of inmates were hired to sew lingerie for a company called Whispers, which may be like Victoria's Secret, she decided she'd gather some of her closest inmates to start a smuggling ring where they make extra undies from scrap material and then wear them for a number of days to get them all smelly from when they piss, poo, sweat, etc, and then they got a guard to smuggle them out. They were making good money until Piper felt she needed to make an example out of one of the Latina inmates because she thought she was betraying her and kicked her out of the ring. The latina girl told another Latina inmate about it and they started their own dirty underwear smuggling ring, but Piper didn't like that and she convinced the new guard to let her start a group that would snuff out illegal activity and the guard approved it. So, she used that as an opportunity to tell the guard the Latina inmates were the only ones smuggling dirty underwear and they got busted after a thorough search and they gave that dark skinned Latina inmate a number of extra years on her sentence, so as a revenge they branded Piper as shown.

And she can't exactly claim innocence because she did cause (inadvertently or not) a lot of bad things to happen over a simple business rivalry (don't forget, she was the first one to say the words war) and as Nicky said when she tried to say "it's not what it looks like" about her neo-nazi 'task-force' "Well sometimes Chapman, 'what it looks like' is all that people have to go on". I'm not saying she deserved this specifically, personally I would've liked to see her get a few more years, but I understand Maria's anger. Plus, maybe it's finally hit her that Boo wasn't exaggerating when she said "Everybody hates you"
