Thanks for sharing this sneak peek and helpful tips as I know on previous Orange Pi boards its a pain flashing Android due to requiring their imaging tool. My board is late to arrive and stuck in transit as is my case and accessories so look forward to trying things out in the new year... I think it's worth calling out that you didn't have a heat sink or fan on the board when you ran your gaming tests. This is important to call out because thermals are often an absolute killer on high performance SBCs. Yet this one takes it in stride and performs pretty dang well without cooling support. I put mine through its paces and was REALLY impressed at how well it held up under load. I may be more impressed than necessary, but I still remember getting burns from a Banana Pi Zero because the board simply wouldn't cool down. Even after I installed a heat sink. Having four cores clocked at a decent GHz is absolutely useless if they immediately throttle the moment you run "ls".

That Gmail account is not used for anything else, there are no Google Docs there, no contacts - KZbin only. Mine finally arrived today. I ordered the 4Gb and they sent me the 8Gb, so a form of compensation for the delay. I'm disappointed that they have still not provided a download for their much self vaunted Orange Pi OS (with Google Play Store)for this SBC as it looks even better than vanilla Android without the store. But looking forward to putting this beast through a barrage of testing and answers to many questions.

Depending on your intended use, the Ubuntu experience is surprisingly good. The board is pretty snappy and responsive, with a surprisingly good KZbin experience. I could use this as a daily desktop computer if I needed to. (I have the 16GB board.)

Bummer. No Orange Pi OS yet. I'm pretty sure that has the Play Store. I just use the Raspberry Pi imager for everything now. It's the easiest. My Orange Pi is stuck in limbo somewhere between Singapore and Canada. Happy that you got yours. Have fun.

I'm glad you got your board. I have tried some of the Linux distros, and even installed to the nvme ssd. I'm currently struggling to install apps on ubuntu- I can do via cli (apt-get install ...) But it seems software center is missing. See if you can do a video on the Linux variants...

The boards with the rk3588 / 3588s don’t seem to have the same compatibility as a Raspberry Pi at this early stage. I haven’t managed to install a different gui on any of them so far.

Thanks for the video and information. I am currently waiting for a Mekotronics 58X and plan to install full Andriod11 or Debian 11 on it with a NVME drive. That NVME drive really sped up my Pine-book-Pro. Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year!🎆

FYI, it looks like NVMe speeds are about 400MB/s read and write based on my own tests and others online who've run similar tests. I've personally peaked at about 415MB/s read using a KingSpec NX "performance" drive. It's a really nice boost over an SD card, but do not overspend on the SSD. This board simply can't take advantage of it.

Have you noticed any issues with images from both the Android and the Orange Pi OS for Opi 5?? Ubuntu and Armbian load fine, but not Android or Orange Pi OS. Did you have any issues with the image files? I've used multiple writers but they do not boot.

I have huge hope that my Orange Pi 5 (that is still on the way) can replace my 2 RPi4 for my home assistant. I ordered 16GB and I hope to put there Debian 11 and then HA. Benchmarks show it is kind of 3x faster in single core and 7x in multicore. Lets see.

I haven’t tried the 3.5mm with Android it works fine with Debian. Raspberry Pi builds of Android have a dedicated settings section for audio, resolution and much more. Hopefully when the official Orange Pi Android comes out it will have Play store and settings for the device. More videos soon.

Thanks for the video it was very helpful and informative to install Android and the app store. I tried getting google play and google play services installed but every version i found was crashing. Aptoide should suffice. I noticed you didn't have a heatsync. Have you seen any overheating?

Anyone run into an issue where after installing Android 12 from Orange Pi 5’s website, the drives you hook up must be formatted to fat32, which has a file size restriction of 4GBs? I’m not able to load anything bigger than 3 or 4 GB to my external to the Android 12 equipped Orange Pi 5. Let me know if there’s a workaround.

When are you going to get the Cool Pi 4B? It's the exact same form factor as the Raspberry Pi 4B except for the mini-DP port. I'm interested in this board and hope it can run Retropie and other Emulation OSes like Baterocera, Lakka, etc.

ETA Prime has successfully installed GooglePlay Store on it. He told this can be easily side loaded by installing GooglePlay Services and GooglePlay store. But many viewers cannot make it run. and of course he doesn't explain how to. Any chances you could try it and make a tutorial ?

When I write the sd card and turn it on the orange pi logo comes up then has a circular animation that says erasing below it. Then it reboots to the orange pi logo then it freezes as it's doing the orange pi animation.

you could have done this all with the Raspberry Pi Imager.... both of these tools do the same exact thing - the write an image to the SD card... give it a try and I PROMISE it will work just fine with the Rasp Pi Imager :)

If I could only have one it would definitely be the Raspberry Pi for the huge amount of things you can do with it. Windows 11, PiAmiga, Dosbox, Retropie, Batocera, Recalbox, huge retro game collections, Chrome OS, almost any Linux os you can think of plus the huge range of accessories and the maker side. The Orange Pi 5 is new and considerably more powerful so its exciting to try new things. I’m hoping that with the low cost of this powerful device a community will grow. I notice you have the same issue I had where the os drive or sd card is "unsupported" and it wants to format it every boot.. any fix for that you know of? I can't get google play services to work and I wonder if that's part of the issue

I had the issue only when trying to wipe the sd card with the recommended tool. Raspberry Pi imager worked fine in erasing the sd card. ETA Prime got one earlier than me he mentioned installing the play store in his video but didn’t say how. Konstakang images use recovery to install Gapps.

I think with the news that there will not be aPi 5 this year it's time to move away from them en masse. If people moved to other systems they would improve so the Pi's only remaining reason to choose them will be negated. A Pi 4 is literally 5 years out of date

Like a lot of your videos, the Orange Pi 5 is a huge disappointment. No one cares about Android. That's what our phones or tablets are for. Garbage OS. We care about how Linux runs on it. My OPi 5 will be here in a week or so. The OPi800 was a massive disappointment.

I care about Android, it's far better for mobile devices than any version of Linux - and that comes from someone who started using Linux back in 1996 and has it (Gentoo Linux) as his main OS today. What I don't care about is Google's spyware on Android - but I don't have a problem with an AOSP-based build like like Lineage, Calyx or Graphene without Google Apps installed. Anyway, nothing stops you now learning Gentoo and doing your own Linux build on it if that's what you want to do - or just wait for someone else to do a Linux build for you.
