Orangutan Mother With Brand New Baby
Bornean Orangutans are Endangered
Bornean Orangutans are an endangered species of Great Ape, threatened to the edge of extinction, due to the ongoing destruction of the Environment in their native homeland of The Indonesian Island of Sumatra. The destruction of their native forests is largely to make way for the planting of palm oil, which is used in the manufacture of many products in developed nations, such as food products and cleaning products
Baby Orangutans at Blackpool Zoo
The Orangutans at Blackpool Zoo are part of the breeding program for this important and vulnerable species, ensuring there is a strong genic population in zoos and wildlife centres across the world, essential for the future survival of these magnificent animals.

I read a short article by a zoo keeper at Chester about one of their orangutans that was a first time mother. She had been hand raised herself so hadn't been taught how to be a mum. They said they had to keep am eye on her for several months. The description was just like what we have seen with Jinga on these short videos. It is in the best interest for the baby to be raised by its mum. He will be okay. Its not the same upbringing her later children might have but he will get through it. Hopefully.

Really? Is this ignorance necessary? You seem like you may be a “throw stones in a glass house kinda gal”. Primate infants are NOT human infants! They are stronger and not as fragile, raised OUTDOORS, and there’s not child protective services running up on this ORANGUTAN mom who exhibits the behavior of a loving new mother who’s learning day by day. Trust me if mom didn’t care about her baby this would be a much more sinister video. Baby definitely wouldn’t be left alone with mom at all. 😒

Either this is the same video being posted over and over, or the baby has not grown in 2 months.

Does she ever take care of the baby or did you all have to intervene? Please let me / us know.

Here we have Jingga again, obviously. I would guess it's an ongoing worry for the keepers. Jingga is so casual and unnurturing , constantly looking for something to eat. The baby is just about OK, but only just. It's a difficult one for all involved, I'm sure. I bet she would get aggressive, though, if they tried to take the baby away from her. Not easy.

On the contrary her behavior is actually indicative of a first time primate mother. She’s very calm so as to keep baby calm and shows no behavioral signs of aggression at all in any of these videos. Her only downfall with being a first time mom is that she needs to let baby boy feed longer, but her breasts could be very sore and again she’s learning with each coming day. Caregivers are making sure baby boy has all the nutrition he needs without stepping in too much which is very commendable because wild animals deserve to be left as wild as possible which is what God intended when creating them ❤

@@user-yl3kg5kn8bYou are mostly correct but if baby is not 🚫 getting enough milk🍼 and is "barely" consuming enough, then yes, the team needs to step in sooner than later. Either way, baby has all my prayers 🙏💟🙏💟 he grows up healthy and happy 😁!!! I hope you have a great day ☀️!!!

How is the baby doing now? Did they have to intercede

The keepers need to interseed, thats not good for baby at all. They get depressed easy.. at least teach momma i know she is new to it but come on

Jingga is a first-time, inexperienced mother and is under constant observation by her keepers, whilst she is not the usual attentive orangutan mother, she is caring for the baby, who is now 4 months old The zoo values every baby born and is regulated by the European Breeding program. They only want to intervene with rearing babies if absolutely necessary, as human intervention has a big impact on the instinctive behaviour in these apes, leading to other issues in adulthood, including how they raise future offspring Thanks for watching

I wonder why they don't group this new mother with another more experienced mother who has also just given birth. Maybe then she might learn what she needs to know for baby's sake.

While it's not usual for uploaded videos of mothers allowing their newborns on the ground, there are some orangutan mothers that do...even some more experience orangutan mothers than Jingga. Every primate mother has different parenting styles just like humans. Blackpool Zoo just released a new picture on their Facebook page and Jarang is doing well.
