I'd be interested in knowing how long they survived on their own in the wild at just four years of age. Couldn't have been very long as they didn't have near the amount of knowledge to make it. There was still a lot to learn about what foods are poisonous, what animals to avoid at all cost, how to properly build a nest, to not come down to the ground unless absolutely necessary. Granted, this was back in 1976 and our knowledge about them was still very limited at that point, so these people probably had no idea that they weren't even close to being ready. They probably assumed that since they were able to pick fruit off a branch and knew how to climb that they were ready.
@olgac82115 жыл бұрын
Had the same idea. At least 8 years is spent in maturing and learning skills to survive from mother. But not enough knowledge for sure at this time period.

Something that I somehow missed the last time I watched this... While they were crossing the river on foot and slipped, sending him downstream trapped in a crate, once they got him back on shore and verified that he was ok, the crate shouldn't have been opened, and he definitely shouldn't have been picked up and coddled. Again, they probably didn't know any better at the time, or that they had the memory capacity of an elephant, but picking him up probably sent a message to him that every time something goes wrong, someone will be there to comfort him.

Now knowing what is known 40 plus years later this video is quite dated, but it does show the beginning process of the concervation and protection of the Orangutans! Kudos to these men and women in this video who were and are so dedicated to the survival of these beautiful animals.

4 years is far too young for an orang to be released on its own. orangs stay with their mothers untill they are 9 years of age . its unlikely a 4 year old orang could survive on it's own . as there are many things they have not learned that only their mothers could show them. not as much was known about the the orangutan at this point most likely. much more is probably known about them now. a 4 year old will be very susceptible to larger predators . baby orangs are much prone to spending time on the ground instead of in the canopy which makes them vunerbale. on orangutan island the t.v program the care givers kept finding young orangutans sleeping on the ground instead of in the tree top. this was because of bot having their mothers teach them nest building and the dangers of being on the ground.
@sgdeluxedoc6 жыл бұрын
Yes.. I agree.. they're just babies. Poor things.. They couldn't possibly have learned what they need to know, I don't care how good the human teachers think they are. Seeing that orang being handheld on the way to being , essentially, abandoned brought tears to my eyes. It's the same as our leaving an 11 year old to cope in the city. :sigh:

This is a very old video they were releasing Orangutans at the age of 4, it was ridiculous. there were bunch of European people who had no idea what they were doing but they wanted to help this amazing being and they were creating more damage. I had an argument with one of those people on another video they're releasing 4 year olds and she felt guilty wanted to comment on my comment. They're just a bunch of ignorant people that never had children. You can tell the anxiety on those babies... plus why put them far away where they couldn't come back to the santury if they don't feel comfortable... only a psychopath would do something like that. It just reminds me of people when they wanted to get rid of their dog, they would drive the dog miles and just dump him in the wild, that's psychopath Behavior. Well I gave thumbs down to this video plus I couldn't watch it all the way to the end. 👎👎

Same here could not finish it. Putting a child in a boat is traumatizing. The orangs are just as humans. Is a fact. So hopefully there is no more of such cruelty pf abandoning 4 year olds in forest by western scientist.

Well just hop into your time machine & go back to 1976 to tell them that. Tell the one's who are actually doing something that you watched a few KZbin videos & are now an expert on orangutans. It's 1976,we have the power of hindsight. You try & determine when to release an orangutan at what age without KZbin and without internet to prove how easy it is!!
@popsishere111 жыл бұрын
OK, so this all took place in 1976, well having seen the release programs from 2009, I think that these Orangs were very young. I'm no expert but 4yrs of age they would most likely still be with their moms learning to servive. Who knows what they were taught before release. Just a question in my mind. That was a long time ago, over 36yrs. now that I think about it

utilizing a helio for an orangutan's release is a complete & total waste of resources!! (fuel, emissions, pilot's time, etc). Knowing most charity & recovery centers don't have much money and need the public's assistance (via donations) the use of a helicopter is very expensive and those funds could of been used for a lot of other things than a helio ride!
