I was watching a video last week and there was a mentioned of the 78xx and 79xx series regulators are known to oscillate and i took note of that. I am working on a Kustom mixer power amplifier and it had an audible motorboating sound. I connected the scope to the regulator chips and found about 425k noise from the 7915. also the voltage never went above 12 volts and fell rapidly down to about 9 volts. Replaced with new part and the noise is gone. So you are the second person to say something about it in a weeks time. I never thought that could happen, but it is true now. Thank you for this video.

Your welcome. Don't forget the.01uf across the electrolytic for the really high oscillations. Although those are much less common. Thanks for watching.

Somewhere on KZbin if memory serves me correctly there is an amplifier made using linear regulators. They can be wired in such a fashion that they operate as amplifiers. That given, it is no surprise that they will oscillate if not padded down with the correct capacitance in the appropriate places. I have also seen 78 series regulators fail and do all sorts of weird things so it's not uncommon to find a faulty one although in the main they are pretty reliable.
