Great Review Dave, Really liked your comment regarding N+1. Recently bought a new 'old model' Focus Izalc Max. Built it up and it weighs 6.5kg. It's fast and comfortable but it cost me about $5000 Aussie dollars. If I could go back though, I'd be happy to have a 7kg bike for under $3000. ORBEA = $7000 AUD and up.... People will buy, but not me any more.

Why not put an aero handlebar on it? It's not heavier than that one but would save some watts.

This could be my next bike, especially because I can truly make it my own. However, everyone is raving about the new Giant TCR and that bike is 600 less and is a said to be extremely comfortable, light and very quick. I’m now very confused. Thoughts?

The problem is that Orbea not let the customers chose between for examble short cage, medium cage and long cage shifters, at the same time chose kassett, and chose between 53/39, 52/38 and 50/34 in the front. Why is that a problem? It would be better if the customers had a lot more alternatives than the very few Orbea gives when we order a bike. For me I would prefer long cage shifter, 11/34 kassett an 52/36 in the front. But such an alternative is impossible to get when you try to order the bike.

nice vid, nice bike, thank you. imo n+1 killer should fit at least 35mm tyres. so, the Orbea Orca is a great roadbike, but no n+1 killer ....I wish, they did a nofrills Ultegra rimbrake version of the Orca. ...start to like the new Systemsix for offering exactly that. cheers

Nice, but. If everyone is effectively using the same data to produce bikes that are almost indistinguishable from all the others out there, how can they justify charging so much money for them? They can hardly blame R&D. 9k, 10k, 12k (Madone) for a bike is outrageous. The manufacturing costs must be a fraction of the overall price. Okay, 3k (retail) for Etap AXS is ridiculous too, so sticking that on any frame bumps the cost, but I still cannot see why these top end bikes are so expensive. Would love CT to look into why they cost so much and break it down, and dig into how much margin companies are making on them. I've actually been looking at buying a mountain bike recently and been amazed at how much less you pay for a top line XC machine compared to road (and for seemingly much more complex machines). Clearly fair-profit-for-all is what keeps people getting out of bed in the morning, but I'm sure if people just stopped spending huge bucks, they'd start dropping prices.
@404nobrakes5 жыл бұрын
phil allan well we know one can buy a high quality carbon frame from china for around $600. The highest tier bikes like the Madone or Venge probably cost around $1000 or $1200 at the absolute max. Anything above that is overhead. The fact is that the only reason companies can charge so much is because people are willing to pay. There’s a TON of competition and it is safe to assume there isn’t any collusion to fix prices going on. The unfortunate issue is that even if biking were much, much cheaper, not a whole lot more people would join the sport. It’s dangerous, it’s uncomfortable, it’s painful, it’s demanding and it happens to also be expensive. Because of this, you end up with an entire population who are fanatic about the sport - there is no room for casuals. And fanatics are willing to spend a lot more money on things than casuals.

The profit margins are not particularly large in the cycling industry. There are a lot of steps and people involved in getting product to consumers. If you want the absolute cheapest bike with super slim margins and very little product development cost buy something from a basic direct to consumer brand. If you want to offer something that massively undercuts what’s out there now then feel free to head over to Taiwan and start making some orders. I think you’ll find its not as easy as it seems.

I'm not a fan of low seat stays and propitiatory seatposts, but the bike is very handsome nonetheless. Still, I don't see why it costs twice as much as the Salsa WarBird 2019, the Genesis Datum, the Norco Search XR, the Forme Monsal, the Accent Feral, 3 times as much as the Giant Defy Advanced & Revolt Advanced, the Holdsworth Mystique, 4 times as much as the Vitus Zenium and many other equally as beautiful carbon bikes.

bB386. The big en!
@404nobrakes5 жыл бұрын
BB386 is the best pressfit standard you could ask for. It’s wide, unlike BB/PF30 or BSA, so you can have better tire clearance and stiffness. It allows for 30mm axles unlike BB86 and BB90 (which is why DUB exists). Best of all, it allows for sleeved bearings unlike BB30/A or BB90 which fit bearings directly into the frame - with disastrous consequences. If you use a one-piece or even a thread-together bottom bracket with a to-spec BB386EVO frame, you shouldn’t have any issues. The only better standard for carbon frames is T47 and that is debatable since it significantly increases mfg costs and increases the advertised weight of frames.
