So happy someone shares my opinion about the "app style artwork" doesn't go hand in hand with board game. The art is stunning, but just don't want this same style in my board games.

The rusted chains of prison moons Are shattered by the sun I walk a road, horizons change The tournament's begun The purple piper plays his tune The choir softly sing Three lullabies in an ancient tongue For the court of the crimson king The keeper of the city keys Put shutters on the dreams I wait outside the pilgrim's door With insufficient schemes The black queen chants the funeral march The cracked brass bells will ring To summon back the fire witch To the court of the crimson king The gardener plants an evergreen Whilst trampling on a flower I chase the wind of a prism ship To taste the sweet and sour The pattern juggler lifts his hand The orchestra begin As slowly turns the grinding wheel In the court of the crimson king On soft gray mornings widows cry The wise men share a joke I run to grasp divining signs To satisfy the hoax The yellow jester does not play But gently pulls the strings And smiles as the puppets dance In the court of the crimson king

With all the talk of flipping tiles, I think my opinion on whether this would be a good game to play with my 9 and 13 year old kids kept flipping as well. I think it will depend on the retail price over here, also if my not so LGS offers a play test session.

Well, Viceroy has the "build a pyramid" element, but it does not limit you regarding placement: Sure you will want to have mono-coloured circles in order to score points from them, but collect enough gems and you can use the ones you have left to "override" non-uniform circles.

I like the bright, stylized art style! It reminds me of Dice Forge. And I don't think Dice Forge would have been as easy to sell say, my nephew and mom on, if it had a less cartoonish theme.

I can totally buy into this argument! Accessibility is important and we have nothing against cartoonish artwork. It's just that this isn't very good cartoonish artwork.

@@NoPunIncluded I was not a big fan of the game unless I needed something to entice four 12 year old girls into boardgaming, which it would be perfect for. However, I disagree Efka and feel the artwork is both cartoonish, yeah, but also beautiful and exceptionally well done. I felt it was so good that, like Anachrony for example, as I began playing for the first time at GenCon, I felt surely there must be more here than what there appears to be as I played my first few turns. Sadly, the mechanics are shallow and the whole endeavor feels pointless somehow. I was engrossed, but then again I always am when playing a boardgame which is why I play them. Agreed with your review otherwise Efka but of all things about the game, I actually really enjoyed the refreshing artwork even as a 37 year old male. You're totally right that it wouldn't be the first game I plop down in front of my adult mates because they'd be like wtf is this...but maybe for one go after I had earned their trust after a game of Caverna, Gaia Project, or Chaos in the Old World first, then I might. Again, loved the review and agree on the whole but feel the art itself is gorgeous even if it's not particularly a go to thematically for adult males.

This game is mechanically EXACTLY what I like, but man oh man does that Clash of Mobile Gods art look odd. I don't even hate the cover! It's just the god tiles that feel like they're staring into my soul. Watching. Waiting. Knowing. Oh also good review and all that.

Tile flipping randomness. Valid comment! Same feeling I had when playing 7Wonders Duel as well. Too much is dependent from a cardflip/tileflip.

I was put off by Splendor's arid desert like feel for a few plays, then adjusted to its atmosphere. It will never be anything but a dry race to 16. Orbis looks like it has a higher fun factor to it, a deeper gameplay decision space, and far more moaning and groaning noises to be made than Splendor. I'm all for that. Azul I won't touch with a 39 and a half foot pole.

@BensonBPH

The problem isn't that it looks "too nice", it's that it's an incredibly cookie-cutter style that is generally associated with low-quality games.

Got this some time ago and finally got to play it myself, and I didn't really like it. The resource management aspect of the game felt too tight and what colors you get on the tiles you pick is essentially completely random. Too strict and too random both.

Again, loved the review and agree on the whole but feel the art itself is gorgeous even if it's not particularly a go to thematically for adult males. I won't be buying this game, however, as someone who enjoys medium+ euros with more elegance and inspiration than Orbis offers. I would take Orbis-level art in other games though in a second.

I played this at the UKGE and my friend and I agreed that it wasn't for us (both 30+ males too) - there was something missing in the game which just didn't spark with us. We weren't told of the rule that the cubes on the tiles could be used to pay for them, so perhaps that may have changed things slightly, but it was one of our least favourite games at the expo and left the table quite deflated. Perhaps the rules have been tweaked, the content made more premium (it was a print and play when we were there), and perhaps some things rebalanced, but I agree not quite for us. We loved splendor, Istanbul, Azul, kingdomino etc, and we wanted to love this but it just didn't scratch the itch well enough.

The "you need to place next to the same color" concept is also present in "Best Treehouse Ever", a drafting game that would appeal more to children than this.

I don't think I can disagree more strongly on the artwork topic. I scrolled through the image gallery on BGG, and Orbis seems to be bright, colorful, and fun. My main complaint about many games is how drab and ugly they look. If every game used Orbis's level of color and vim, I'd be much more interested in trying a lot of them.
