Disclaimer: There are lots of options out there for computers. Many of which are more powerful and more expensive than what we have listed. The set up featured was put together specifically to run Mastercam and Solidworks. This system works incredibly well for us and fit into our budget.

MasterCAM has no special requirement. AMD processors are faster, cheaper, use less energy and run cooler than the Intel processors and would run it just fine. Ditto for SolidWorks. I'd seriously try to exchange for an AMD setup.

@@SomeTechGuy666 You gonna service their stuff for free? Lovely to critique and all, but they've got a computer sitting there that works for them, and you are some random KZbin commenter. I wouldn't expect what you've got to say to carry a whole lot of weight as there is no reason to listen to us over someone else. To say they are at a massive disadvantage with this setup would also be disingenuous. It is a fine setup, just not the razor edge of max performance at stock.

Luckily, no one has any personal opinion on what computer components are “best” for someone else’s situation. 🙄 Price, performance, support, etc. are all based on specific personal needs. Sure, there is a better solution to any problem but if it fits your needs then, as Titan so often exclaims…. BOOM! Problem solved. I’m sure all the YT IT comments are very helpful though.

LinusTechTips is run by a Canadian guy named Linus Sebastian. He is the #1 tech youtuber. He runs Linus Media Group, which is exactly that, a media group. "We always try to show things in their best light, without losing our souls" is sort of their mantra. If you'd rather work with someone in the US, Level1Techs (another youtube channel) would love to build computers and really explain why/how things are done, what does/does not matter, do the testing to figure out if throwing more money at the problem helps or hurts, etc. There are two other youtubers in the US tech space that people would scream if I didn't mention: 'Gamer's Nexus' and 'JayzTwoCents'. Personally, I'd love to see your Orbital system go up against a Threadripper system. Threadripper is pretty expensive, but it's a BEAST. As for Level1Techs, they worked with LinusTechTips to help build a hyper-fast storage server (using 100 Gb ethernet) and troubleshoot why it wasn't working as designed. They also helped Gamer's Nexus understand performance features and pitfalls of high speed central storage servers for their video content. But Level1Techs know more than just storage, CPU reviews are the bread and butter of all of these guys, and the CPU is the thing mastercam hits the hardest. All of them know that more cores / more speed doesn't always mean the application runs faster.

The people at my office have been working remotely and we work a lot with CATIA V5, moving to V6, and still use some AutoCAD. Well, I couldn't use my spacemouse for a while cause it isn't supported in Remote Desktop. So I looked for a way to use it remotely and talked a lot with IT and my CAD coordinator who just said "wouldn't getting rid of the space mouse be the solution?" Just insane but understandable when he still uses the Microsoft Intellimouse with those lateral buttons for "enhance AutoCAD functionality"

Very nice. - 8GB Nvidia Quadro RTX 4000 woah! workstation graphics? Didn't know those were better than regular GPUs for cad/cam but I suppose they could be for programs other than Fusion 360 which is pretty domestic. Also the normal graphics GPUs are basically unobtanium right now so for that reason it makes sense I guess. Bitcoin mining has distorted the GPU market pretty hard.
@Q5Grafx
@Q5Grafx 3 жыл бұрын
they will allow the use of cores to do mathematical computations in cad/cam similar to mining in certain programs but only certain programs. most just use the card for display and the cpu for render.
@multiHappyHacker
@multiHappyHacker 3 жыл бұрын
@@Q5Grafx Autodesk won't support gaming GPUs for CAD/CAM applications meaning if there is a display bug autodesk won't fix it because they can't get nvidia to fix it--unless it's a quadro card. Nvidia enforces this and probably AMD as well. The cards have the same chips, sometimes underclocked, with a lot more VRAM and some extra capabilities like multi-monitor display (like 5-10 monitors at a time). kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIWZiqp8bLOIic0
@Jack-yl7cc
@Jack-yl7cc 3 жыл бұрын
Workstation GPUs are designed for continuous long hours of heavy use, which means they hold up much better compared to regular consumer graphic cards. If you are replacing the card every year then it doesn't matter much but, if you want the card to last for at least 3 years, then go with a Workstation rated GPU. They are very comparable to the difference between a sports car(consumer "gaming" GPU) and your average family car.
@multiHappyHacker
@multiHappyHacker 3 жыл бұрын
@@Jack-yl7cc I find that odd, considering the cooling for the professional cards is usually routed straight out the back of the card instead of blasting into the case all around the heatsink. There's a lot of heat going into components on the card that wouldn't be in the case of a normal gaming card design.
@Jack-yl7cc
@Jack-yl7cc 3 жыл бұрын
@@multiHappyHacker If you get at least a mid-tier or higher workstation card then chances are the entire top of it will be covered in a heatsink and they intentional exhaust out of the case because they are designed with the knowledge that they will be going into systems with questionable at best cooling in the case. Workstation classed GPUs are not the speed demons that a similar spec gaming GPU is; they are designed for reliability first and foremost. Also, their warranty will cover professional use, unlike a consumer grade card so, at least you will have a chance of getting the card replaced if you burn it out within its warranty period.

Both Mastercam and Solidworks are not optimised very well to take advantage of this high end hardware. Both of these companies really need do ground-up rebuild and stop building on top of their super dated legacy code. They for sure have enough money to do so. Especially considering the crazy rates they charge just for yearly maintenance alone.

wondering why you didnt go for one of the 24 or 48 core machines possible from amd. ive been running 8 cores for modeling/animation work on the same machine i built in 2011 but its outdated now though still way faster than anything on the market. with your wallet i would have gotten a dual 48 core processor build with 256gb ram and dual 4090rtx cards with 4 5TB SSD drives. and id liquid cool all of it instead of just the cpu.. currently i am building what i call a budget machine for less than $500 with 8 cores liquid cooled for my 6090 controller. and even with a several generation old GTX 780 SC card in it i can still whip around million poly models as if theyre a box. and i can load and rt render scenes with 30 million polys and 200,000 instances in it with no problems. sure i could remove all the barriers with a deep wallet but working for a school prohibits that. but i am going to look into one of those $300 mice. one of the better looking flying mice ive seen.

Threadripper is slower for single core loads. No big speed advantage over R9 unless you have massive parallel loads.
@sasjadevries
@sasjadevries 3 жыл бұрын
You have to understand a couple of things: 1) Solidworks is just shit the way it's programmed. It's not reliable and it's not designed to efficiently make use of a lot of cores. So you're better off having fewer faster cores. 2) And you're talking about polygons and render scenes... So you're using a 3d mesh program, not a solid parametric CAD program. Parametric CAD software doesn't store models in triangles, it actually stores the tools you used to draw it; so if you draw a circle then it will actually only safe the centerpoint of that circle and its diameter. 3) The RTX 4090 does not exist... The newest RTX flagship-card is an RTX 3090. Titan was talking about the *Quaddro RTX 4000,* which is a workstation card specifically made for the sort of software he uses. And there is no 90 in the name, it's not 4090, it's just 4000.

I understood it as hours being the total time to get the job done. Like you select a tool and generate the toolpath for that tool, after that then you want to change the setting and regenerate your toolpath, and then you go to the next tool and try out different settings and regenerate that a few time. I mean 20 times "a few minutes" is still "hours".

That 3d mouse looks like a total waste of money to me. On most CAD-software you can hold down the scrollwheel to orbit around, hold shift to pan, and turn the scrollwheel to zoom. It's right there at your fingertips: left mouse button to select stuff, right mouse for the context menu, and scrollwheel for looking around. --- And then there is 3d software where you can press shift to change between orbiting and panning without reclicking; once you get the hang of it you can throw around 3d models like a ninja. And there is 3d software where you can go to top view, front view, back view, etc. by just hitting the numpad. Although I haven't seen that on parametric CAD yet.
