This chemistry video tutorial provides a basic introduction into orbital diagrams and electron configuration. It explains how to write the orbital diagram notation (with arrows) of an element given its atomic number and by extension - how to write the electron configuration of that element including ions of elements.

for some clarification for the end, with the transition metals: the building principle (aufbau) ordering is different from the "leaving order", this is why the 3d orbital is 'built' before the 4s orbital, but when an anion forms the 4s is first to go the 'building order' follows the aufbau/diagonal diagram order, (ex, 4s before 3d) the 'leaving order' just follows energy level and orbital shape (ex, 4p, then 4s, then 3d, then 3p, etc....) but both of these principles are approximations that are proven to be not entirely correct with experimental data. for example, there are some exceptions to the building order with Chromium, Copper, Palladium, and others because of the way electrons prefer to fill more of the d-orbital (optimally 5 electrons with the same spin, occasionally 4) over filling the higher energy level s-orbital with 2 electrons of opposite spins. this also occurs in a similar way with the f-block elements. more info here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aufbau_principle#Madelung_energy_ordering_rule

@SomeOne-rx2xw
@SomeOne-rx2xw 3 жыл бұрын
@@TIMEispreciousthanGOLD because Co2+ has fewer electrons than protons(2 more protons than electrons), the atomic number is 27 so 27-2=25electrons, the electrons are taken out from the highest energy level in the Cobalt atom which is n=4.
