Technically this is the original version and the 10min one is an edit… They intended this album to be a DVD release and the CD version was kind of a bonus.. The reason why there was no vinyl release too..

Never knew was an original cut of this song. The longer sections really bring this home. Too bad they never released this as a b-side to one of their singles. The 10 minute version on album felt sub par, too short with all the sounds used here.

I would have made The Altogether a double album with the original unedited cut on the second disc with Doctor?, Monorail and Beelzebeat.

The original versions are always longer. I mean, even if you look at Chime... the original wasn't expected to be a big hit and it was kind of just a short jam rather than a full song. But after Jazzy M latched onto it he realized how awesome it sounded Orbital wrote 12 minute 40 long version and sold it as their chime single. And even the original Deeper is the B-Side that's over 15 minutes long.. All other versions of Chime and Deeper are edits of those originals. So the only example I can think of of an Orbital orginal being shorter... was the little Chime demo they when they weren't expecting it to be an underground success.. And I don't think it was really complete. When they actually released it it was over 12 minutes. The original orginal I've never even heard. It's not the 4 minute edit... the original original was an underground success but I don't think it was ever released. Even the original Oh'Zone version was 12 minutes 40. So I think the only original version of an Orbital song that isn't longer is unreleased, incomplete and a surprised success. Orbital always make these huge masterpieces and edit down their songs. Then they add and remove extra features in their live pieces... and the song usually ends up with more loops but actually slightly shorter... and they sometimes add some of the orgiinal loops in sooner... It's like Paul has said before. A song is never really finished... you just have to leave it at a point you're okay with. And when they play live they usually shorter their songs... although they do do longer stretched versions of their songs too.... but that's usually when they're experimnenting with new sections which they then edit down again eventually and then they add more stuff in. Everything complete seems to be edited down but... I mean on albums and live. When it comes to singles I think the longer versions are the complete ones... they just often release them as singles edited down much shorter because singles sell well when they're shorter. Their process of recording and editing reminds me very much of the whole thesis, antithesis, synthesis Hegalian thing. Oh.... and what Paul has said about a song never being finished... it reminds me very much of this awesome quote: "Art is never finished, only abandoned." - Leonardo Da Vinci

Thank you! I keep looking for The Altogether dvd, but seems no one in USA is selling theirs as no version playable on US devices is available-lol! Good for them! I wouldn't sell either!

Dimitris Evagelou The Altogether 5.1, the surround sound version that was released on DVD. Although this version of meltdown was not mixed in surround, had no associated video clip, didn’t play as part of the main feature and wasn’t listed in the track listing so it’s kind of a bonus track.

@@margiemorrison9190 that DVD was chock full of easter eggs - in fact, most of what was on the 5.1 DVD was 'hidden' content. For people in the USA, it's not that difficult. Just get a region free DVD player, or on a computer DVD Rom, change the region coding. Most DVD Rom makers let you change it 3 or 4 times, but even then, just flash the ROM of the DVD drive and you get all your region changes back. DVD is a bit of a dead end format these days anyway, but as usual, some good stuff gets trapped in the format and doesn't really make the transition to new technology. The so-called full version of this DVD on KZbin is pathetic. Most of the tracks and videos are missing
