The danger that lurks in the area of the Strait is the attack of killer whales, which has led to the sinking of several sailboats. In recent days, there have been multiple attacks in which the crew had to be rescued. Maritime rescue has had to intervene on 23 occasions. Killer Whales ram boats and attack the rudder, breaking chains and causing damage. These attacks are concentrated in the Strait and have occurred on several occasions throughout the year. Ship sinkings and numerous attack attempts have been reported. The massive presence of killer whales in the area is due to factors such as the change in water temperature and the search for food. The aggressive behavior of killer whales towards sailboats is due to the defense of their territory or possibly due to playful behaviour. The scientific community is investigating the phenomenon and there is a need to find solutions to guarantee the safety of boats and coexistence with orcas in danger of extinction. The possibility of drawing up a hatchery map is also mentioned to prevent recreational boats from passing through these areas and protect the hatchlings and marine coexistence.
