This is only happening in this region outside Gibraltar. Orca learn this behavior and it normally starts as a response to some event. It seems logical to assume that one of the local pods had contact with the rudder of a sailboat that resulted in some traumatic event. Maybe a calf was struck and killed or even a matriarch. Such an event would have been traumatic. It is even possible that a young calf could have been hung up and dragged along by a sailboat for some time. In any event; as a result they have started treating these appendages on passing sailboats as threats and try to break them off. They are not attacking the people or any other part of the boat so the root cause is clear.

@socket_error1000

@@travel_sim We do know that orca tend to use hunting techniques common to regional pods and rarely adopt new ones. This is thought to be because it is a learned behavior taught to new pod members. They have been seen teaching juvenile orca how to use hunting techniques. This is also why it is hard on Orca populations when their normal food supply is depleted as they don't have a ready source of new food to switch to because they have always hunted a select regional diet, fish, mammals, (other)dolphins, etc and have not learned techniques for hunting other food sources in their region. Some pods can hunt many different food types but these tend to be ocean pods that encounter a larger variety. In my region they stick primarily to salmon and other fish. Even seals and sea lions are a rare snack for them (unfortunate because this would help the salmon population). The decline in local salmon populations, mostly due to neglect of salmon streams and over development, has led to an endangered species designation for them in the Puget Sound region (NW USA).

@@socket_error1000 maybe hunting, but still doesn't feel right, why don't they finish the hunt🤔and something it seems to me that the current cardboard boats are not a big problem for them.
@socket_error1000

@@travel_sim I was using the hunting techniques to demonstrate that they teach these behaviors to each other and they can become generational behaviors within the pod. I don't think they are hunting the sailboats but simply treating the rudder itself as a threat because of some past negative encounter with a sailboat rudder. Sailboat rudders are typically long and strait, unlike the more square shape normally seen on a propellor driven boat. They would be easily discerned and the sailboat rudders are what are being targeted in these attacks. Even in the one that sank it was because of the damage to the rudder and leaks caused there that led to the loss of the vessel. It should be noted that there are no reports of them attacking the keel of the sailboats either, a much larger and more prominent feature. This makes it less likely this is just playful hooligan behavior of juvenile orca, as some have suggested, as they are not randomly targeting different areas of the boats nor any variety of boats. If these were random attacks I think we would have cases where sport fishermen and pleasure boaters would be reporting hostile encounters with orca when adrift in these waters.

In Hawaii, the sharks have become "trained" to chase boats on the North Shore of Oahu. There are several "shark diving" and "cage" tour companies that take people offshore 1 mile to swim the with sharks. The sharks (Galapagos, Tiger, and reef usually, occasionally great white) are attracted to the sound of the boat motors, because many of these tour companies feed or chum the sharks to attract them. There are many boat tour operators in the Tarifa region offering Orca tours - if they are chumming the waters, this may be why the Orcas attacked your boat. The tour boat companies profit, but puts the non-tour boaters at risk of attack.

Great White, Tiger and Orcas are very intelligent so it's quiet clear that they could as if you are saing, the sound of a boat with feeding. Not only the tourist guided but also from fisherboats there's always a "treat" for them. There are records of schools of orcas besieging tuna fishermen. Especially the fishermen in very small boats from the African side. One or the other came back with only a skeleton.

I was doing my RYA Yachtmaster in Marbella, Spain in 2021 and we took several voyages through the straights. The first time we heard a mayday for an orca attack just 5 NM from our position. We saw them get helicoptered off their small sailboat. The next trip a month later we were in La Liñea and SEVEN cats were in the marina for rudder repairs. As we departed, a family monohull was getting ready to head north as we were heading east back into the Med. As they were checking out, they were asking the marina about attacks. Sure enough, we heard their mayday over the radio less than an hour later. This has been going on for years, but it was very common during that time.

For instances like this, they should equip a hydrophone beneath the hull that can be activated to create an unpleasant frequency when this sort of thing occurs. Harmless to the animals and saves damage to the boat, not to mention people's lives. It was only a few months ago that orcas attacked a monohull and everyone on board was killed. Simply floating there, playing dead, and hoping they don't sink the boat isn't really good enough. This is happening way too often not to take some sort of creative action to deter the orcas from pursuing this behavior. Thus far, I think the hydrophone would be the best possible idea.
@brendanukveteran2360

Hydrophones receive - they do not transmit. You mean some kind of [expensive !] sonar. Sonar has never deterrred any whale or similar form approaching sea going vessels. Orcas are curious animals and they are interacting with somehing in their space ....;and I for one would have been very concerned if I had been on that boat....big powerful fish vs manmade structure in deep water....some experts think the Orcas are wanting the engines to turn the props so they can "enjoy" the prop wash...might be tru and it might not but either way - not an enjoyable encounter.
@WOTArtyNoobs
@WOTArtyNoobs 12 күн бұрын
@@brendanukveteran2360 The answer might be an LRAD system fitted for underwater propagation. LRAD are extremely uncomfortable for human ears because the volume is intense. They fixed LRADS on ships being attacked by pirates so that they could broadcast intense noise at a distance. It seems that the Orcas are focusing on the rudders and the centerboards, so it might be necessary to have removable boards fitted.

The Robertson family was sunk by orcas in 1972. His story doesn't focus on the orcas, but this is one example that this isn't new. I don't remember the name, but another survival story from the 80s was the result of something hitting his sailboat. If this is a learned behavior, it could be its been passed to more generations than we think. Have the recent accounts mentioned if their motor was on at the time of the attack, or does it matter?

They sunk reportedly two boats, one of the boats with structural damage before even the incident with the orcas happened. There was never an “attack” as what marine biologists would account as attack on any boat. This are interactions that unfortunately cause damages to the boats and more unfortunately two to sink. But no human life lost yet. I’m myself a sailor and I have to say that I don’t understand sailors still using this passages solo and not in convoys. The orcas only interact with single boats, not with convoys or more than two boats. I know it’s not completely unavoidable to use this area but at least don’t attend the passage with a single boat. There are also measures that keep the orcas of the boat like towing a dinghy behind and the orcas plat normally with the dinghy instead of the sailboat. A real attack would be that the orcas would jump onto the deck to damage the structure and to sink it in like they do with whales. Sadly no one knows if this interactions are intentionally or just out of curiosity or training of the calves. Also is a decline in whales being observed in this area, might be a reason why orcas use sailboats as substitution or it’s even a revenge for us fishing their food away (which I personally doubt because they would attack most likely the fishing boats and not sail boats). Also I hope that people don’t start reacting violent towards the orcas by using fireworks, guns or even pouring diesel or engine oil into the sea. To make a pod of orcas angry won’t end up well for the boat and crew though. We normally see only 1/3 of the entire pod, mostly one or two adults and the calves, the pod is most likely three times bigger as what we see, when they get angry and really try to sink a boat it will happen for sure. I doubt that (expect maybe a steel or aluminium yacht) will be able to withstand a hit of a jumping orca. This would mean a hit of 6 tons punctual onto the hull, I doubt that the structural integrity will withstand this force, which would cause the boat to break apart and sink, but even if it would withstand this punctual force, it would definitely flood the boat by sinking it in and the boat, because most likely the doors might be open will take on water which will also result in sinking the boat… each way the outcome of a real attack would be devastating for the boat and crew…

Orcas are highly intelligent creatures. The Mediterranean Sea is basically empty due to overfishing at this point, and Orcas are intelligent enough to realize HUMANS are to blame. They're starving, and they know exactly why. They seem to attack the boats particularly when the engines are on, as moving boats are a threat to their food. As we destroy our oceans, the intelligent species that live within it aren't going to play nice anymore.

Similar to their experience in nature, they coordinate attacks on species where they've a clear advantage, whether by size, speed, health, or circumstance. Orcas generally avoid other species that pose a serious threat i.e the male sperm whale or pilot whale, unless those whales are sick/injured. So, likewise, orcas coordinate attacks on smaller sea vessels whom they 1) see as a threat and 2) likely can dominate. According to the presented study’s the orcas behaviour is trained due to fishermen. Apparently they where fishing here and orcas waited for the fish to be hauled up to their depths to catch some fish. Not the sea is empty and orcas don’t have any thing to feed on. Back when the military was testing new sonar technology off the waters of Kauai, Hawaii I was on the cliffs above Shipwreck's Beach for the sunset when me and my friends witnessed something I've never heard of before. From our vantage point we had a pretty clear view of the entire horizon of ocean, The Humback Whales, The Orca's, and The Dolphins were everywhere you looked and behaving strangely. Everything seemed to be jumping out of the water as often as possible like they were trying to escape the sonar or something, then some of the Humpbacks started positioning themselves head facing towards the ocean floor with their tails above water and would violently smack their tails against the water surface 20-30 times per session. Then the sky started doing it's sunset thing and changing colors while all these ocean animals everywhere you looked continued to jump consistently as the Ocean surface reflected the sunset colors but broken up by the splashing, as it got dark a Comet came through the atmosphere and flared up into a big fireball in the dusky sky before disappearing almost instantly with the Ocean animals still jumping everywhere. Only me and one other member of the group saw the Comet at the end before we left but we all left in complete awe of what we just saw. My theory ever since has been related to the military sonar testing happening during that time, doesn't surprise me if there's some anger towards boats by whale populations.

A friend of mine doing a solo crossing of Cookes Straight (New Zealand) to deliver his 30ft yacht to the top of the South Island for Xmas sailing. He was in calm weather when the oat was becalmed... He was resting at the tiller when it hove over to one side.. he tried to straighten it but it was hard over.. He looked over the side to find he was being "Attacked" by an Orca nearly the length of the yacht... The gentle giant had found a nice sharp object to scratch his belly on (keel and rudder) rather than having to swim 10k to the nearest rocks... Once it had had a good scratch it loped away, probably quite happy with itself. Orca are big dolphins. They are extremely intelligent. They don't attack solid objects like a boat (They can tell way more about a boat hull with a few clicks that you could with your hands). That's why there are NO documented reports of wild, free-living orcas ever having intentionally attacked humans. We get them quite a lot in Wellington. Often a mother will bring a calf into the harbour and take it round the coastline (possibly as it's a more sheltered training ground for beach pickings). There's some stunning footage of one in about 5ft of water under a wharf and another with a guy swimming with them (not recommended, one may get curious what we taste like)/

They detonate in the water after a few seconds swimming and do no harm to the animals beside of the loud bang. There have been live threating attacks.
