From 1:20 onwards: Baby dolphin is pushed away from boat and away from mother by 1 killer whale as 2 decide to hold up the mother by the boat. There was one killer whale that was bigger than the other 2 by a bit(imo) it has a pronounced white patch behind the dorsal fin and tail on top of its body. Both senior orcas have big white patches though so it gets tricky. The 2 holding by the boat take off to chase baby and - complete speculation here- the mother dolphin goes quiet to hear “speaking” going under water to listen where baby went and is going. There’s a lull while camera finds the action and mother isn’t “herded”. I’d imagine while camera is searching, the one killer is being loud and the other 2 come silent and very quickly to try and sneak attack the young one. Regardless, once camera comes back the mother dolphin sees a chance and goes to the right of the orca formation- probably calling to her baby. Under water it is loud at this point. The baby is also on the right of the orca formation, and you can see the killer whale farthest to the right(the juvenile orca, feint to cut off the reconnection at 1minute 42 seconds. It’s a small move but was important. Kinda like turning his body. Like a “nah not that way”. Right after that, you see the mother dolphin was right behind and baby dolphin wanted to go right. In the meantime the center killer lunges for baby dolphin and it’s forced to the left. 1 minute 47 seconds- The real attack is on now. If you keep your eye on the juvenile killer whale, it switches positions to the left side of the formation. He turns his body sideways to make a barrier and set up an angle of better probability for the attacking whale. The baby dolphin won’t swim toward the white stomach but can’t go right either. 1 minute 55 seconds- middle/ big killer whale releases a sound/yell/shriek along with a burst of speed... can see the bubbles! pushing the young one away and left, towards the white stomach of the juvenile. The killer that was covering the right side of the formation, switches middle, once it’s sure baby is going to the left, while the center killer and the bubbles continue forward, taking up the right side of the formation. The attacking orca mistimes the push. Fascinating to think maybe the bubble screen also somehow aided the charging whale like a “smoke screen” but idk. Regardless the whale that charged the baby missed. 2 minutes 3 seconds- The young killer whale completely whiffs, somewhat lazily from inexperience. He doesn’t cover the center. I think if it was more experienced the hunt is over but baby makes it through. 2minutes 10 second - Mama dolphin ain’t having it and decides it’s time to risk life and limb. The 2nd orca chases hard while the youngest orca follows. Baby dolphin dodges both, and comes back towards mama dolphin, but the big killer whale was between mother and baby, cutting off a reconnection. 2 minutes 13 seconds- you can see the biggest orca do another acoustic attack or something- another bubble trail. This stops baby from going behind her. Mama dolphin is gets desperate coming in dangerously and distracts by diving down. They do link up briefly, but the big killer gets fierce and then chases mama dolphin aggressively (not sure) while 2nd orca goes all in on the baby. I believe juvenile has another half hearted miss too. Not sure. 2 minutes 47 seconds- 2nd orca(?) is alone in pursuit, juvenile....somewhere. Mama dolphin swoops in distracting the solo orca, while one that chased her away previously comes back from out of screen, but goes for baby dolphin. Jumping to force it down? Mama and baby link up briefly. Young killer gets some redemption by chasing them(2 minutes 48 second briefly and disappears out of screen) as big killer comes around and joins. Big killer takes the lead and separates them for good at 2 minutes 52 seconds Now they are by the boat- which brings me to my biggest speculation yet. I started the commentary at 1:20 because at this time by the boat the 2 killers herded the mother and she did not want to go around or under the boat! She waited until the 2 left and then came around the boat behind them. Once they get back to the boat at the end, you can see the mama dolphin is still the same way. She knows the young one needs to stay in open water. Idk what happens for sure but it looks like the young one tries to get around both the 3 killers and a boat and probably thinks to boat will help. The baby can’t go left or right or straight(in it’s young mind) so goes down and tries to do an 180 away....basically ending the chase because the baby has less locations to come up to surface for air. Perhaps the white hull of the boat was too much like the bubble attack and white stomach of the juvenile at 1 minute 47 seconds. Who knows. But I do see multiple strategies to hunt here for sure! And there was a whale leading the acoustical attacks/bubble screens- imo. Fascinating! Sorry for the errors can’t tell the big ones apart sometimes.

There are two types of killer whales. Some are hunters for large prey, such as fur seals, dolphins and whales. Others feed exclusively on fish. This is so insane! Wow 🤯 excellent video.. also Orcas have never attacked a human in the wild!? think about that 🧠

It is bizarre, considering how vicious they can be... Maybe they just don't like our smell. If it were about intelligence they'd have killed many of us like we do them.
@takodanobaba4 жыл бұрын
Travis Arthur It’s most likely that Orcas have no sense of smell. They do have amazing hearing though.

I thought dolphins were much faster than orcas
@dwanrobinson4 жыл бұрын
They are if you notice the orcas have to cut them off in order to catch up. Like a how a boxer cuts off the ring when fighting a faster opponent. If 3 of u are chasing one all the hunters have to do is turn the chase into a relay race. One sprints while the other jogs causing the dolphin to have to constantly sprint while the orcas are interchanging between who sprints. So they can maintain a high speed for a longer period of time wearing the dolphin down while cutting him off at every turn.
