It's quite an interesting thought, they clearly have a way to communicate amongst each other that we are unable to understand. However, it's more than likely they can pick up on certain tones or frequencies to get an idea of how we're feeling.

They actually understand a good deal about us because they see us all the time when fishing and can see all of our intestines using echolocation. They along with dolphins can actually tell what animal is an air or water breather based on their respiratory system

I have seen pods come together with numbers 150 to 200 following the Alaska one trawler processor back in 89 and 90. There is no way shape or form you could get me in the water with them . However, seeing the intelligence was phenomenal. The mothers would bring their babies to the surface for a meet and greet and a snack. Pretty crazy

@@sundayroast8779 the only fatalities from orcas are the ones that are held in captivity in bathtubs as slaves and prisoners made to perform tricks for people's entertainment. They are far too intelligent for this stupid s*** and they end up getting frustrated and lash out because what animal or person wouldn't when they want to be free. A lot of those orcas in these entertainment venues were kidnapped from their mothers and their family pods and they didn't even attack them when they took their family members prisoner. Still no record of a fatality in the wild. There are people that swim with them in open- ocean. That's where you go see orcas, not in a bathtub performing tricks.

There are different types or orcas that live in the oceans. If all orcas shared the same food, they would die out. So therefore you have southern and northern resident orcas off Washington and Canada that eat salmon, squid. You have resident orcas off New Zealand that eat sting rays. Then you have your consumers of the oceans, the transient orcas that eat marine animals, whales tongue and jaw,, shark liver, penguins, seals, dolphins. All the orcas in captivity are resident orcas, that eat only fish. Transient orcas would die a few days. These orcas in this video here, eat stingrays

Right from the beginning, the orca closely approached and exposed its belly. This was the orca gesture that meant it was friendly. The bubbles meant it wanted to play. Orcas keep trying to communicate with people, who they consider as intelligent, and roughly equals, but most people seem unable to even grasp the basics. Watch other orca videos, even with pods simply interacting with each other, and you should be able to easily pick up these gestures. If different pods meet, the approaching pod will first send a representative, who approaches the alpha of the other pod, and will make a close pass showing its underside. Then, once the introductions are made, the pods will mingle.

Mr. nickbig1 You are absolutely right and I am so glad you commented. While watching this video, I felt myself getting frustrated at certain parts because as soon as the whale exposed his belly I was so hoping that the guy would reach out and acknowledge the whale. Maybe a belly rub or a wave?? Also when the guy grabs the rope from the boat and accelerates his speed, the whale did too in a playful manor. I just wish more people could read the body language of animals. This could have been on a whole nother level but it's still an awesome video! 👌🐋🐋🐋

First off, in general, healthy wild animals will avoid conflict, usually through activities that I call "forest etiquette". One such activity is to deliberately make noise, to announce your presence when entering other animals' territory, to avoid surprise and unnecessary conflict. Animals that sneak usually are showing they are weak, or they are hunting. Both activities invite attack. Wild animals often flee humans because we seem irrational to them, rather than simply neighbors, or part of nature. "Primitive" people, who live with wildlife, understood this.

Whales sonar receive is the the underside of the lower jaw. It they want to 'look' closely at an object they will roll over to face the jaw to the object. As with all animal that is a exposed position and will only do it if they feel no threat and sufficiently curious.

Honestly, it’s quite amazing. Orcas are so curious with humans and what we can do (you can tell how they turn sideways or belly up, to get a better view). What I've learnt by listening to experts who study these mammals is if they show their stomach to you like she did when approaching the paddle boarder that it is a form of non threatening communication. They are big on body language.

We had the privilege to see them this close in BC, one day returning from the mainland on a 12' dingy. Same thing, huge male, cow and two calves, as they went under us. I remember seeing eye to eye with the male, just before they startled and took off like rockets. Will never forget this and I keep it, as one of God's greatest gifts in my life.

NZ again, NZ orcas keep surprising those who love them, I love how they react to people,so lovely ! This is the natural behaviour not staged like captive ones. Orca should be free like this. New Zealand protects their Orca closely. They're very sacred to New Zealand. Unfortunately, in the US, the Southern Resident Orcas are starving due to 4 dams on the snake river. The dams are holding back the King Salmon they need. It isn't due to what happened around Japan. Orca around Japan would have died years ago if that was the case.

Judging from the size, a few of these animals were still calves. You later see a few of the older animals as well. You can see that they pay attemtion that their little ones are safe, but also that they do not get to be too boisterous with the humans.

The orca immediately flipped over and exposed its belly, which is an intraspecies sign of peace. The bubbles were blown after the man started kicking, which means that it was likely an attempt to get the man's attention and get him to calm down. It almost seems like the whale realized it came off as threatening and wanted to communicate that it was only curious.

Bubble blowing is normally a way to say 'go away'. Bottlenose dolphins use it as a way to threaten intruders or as a warning. The whale was curious, but cautious as well. Exposing ones belly is NOT a sign of 'peace'. With most animals its a submissive gesture. Orcas normally show their belly to prey (which dont include humans). Showing their belly to a pod member or a human could have a variety of meaning....its not known for sure.

Diana Herron.. So am I, from YYJ also am going down to the Gorge waterway today..July 1st. Anyway, last year I was fishing from the end of Ogden Point breakwater. Several whalewatching boats departed the harbour with guests who have spent $$ to go out and see Orcas. Just after the last boat left a small pod of Orcas came from INSIDE the harbour passing in front of me no further or farther than 30' from the end of the breakwater. Where they had been hiding, I don't know, maybe looking around down by the Customs dock or the restaurant at the beach end.We all got a laugh at that and the encounter cost us nothing.No fishing now with all the closures.Cheers from View Royal.

Families of them used to porpoise alongside my family's 27-foot boat when I was a kid. Playful black and white creatures flashing through Puget Sound on both sides of our boat, as if seeking our attention. We pretty much took it for granted then, but thinking back, I realize how beautiful they were.

When playing Orca will swim upside down and flash their white belly bits it's an amazing thing to see and funny as hell when they sneak up on unsuspecting swimmers, free divers / kayakers and scare them shitless with one massive WHOOOOSH of air then whilst the humans are still having a coronary you'll see the Orca swimming just a few feet by the side or back and forth underneath them flashing their white belly bits and giving it “Just playin Bro...Just screwing with ya look see - white belly bits” NZ Orca are unique though they have always been protected and highly revered so their relationship with humans has never been fraught with the same issues of caution, distrust and uncertainty. It's an amazing, really special relationship.

Their underside of the lower jaw is how whales feel the sonar reflections. When they want to closely 'look' at something they will roll their underside toward the object.

Sonar requires good hearing, stick their head out of the water and they may hear it if low enough and see it's shadow and figure it out. They see bird shadows and the young will jump at slow low flyers and floaters. Seagulls always follow to eat scraps.

i went to iceland a few years ago and saw about 20 fully grown orcas n babies on the north side of the island. They hung out with us for an hour plus. it was amazing. if you get a chance, go! :D

I cringed every time one of those magnificent creatures came close to the propellers. So often damage is done to marine life this way. Better to turn off the motors and bask in the experience

Their sonar is so good that if you are in the water they can 'see' your heart beating. They are well aware of the propeller but accidents can happen and the disturbance created by the prop may make a lot of noise and seem like fog as to us.

Yeah, this just happened to a Dolphin at the Jersey Shore that got sliced up by boat propellers, and then right after that 4 sharks ate it alive. It was so disturbing and sad.
