ORCHID CARE: CATASETUM ORCHIDS TIPS AND TRICKS TO 4 SEASONS OF CARE
Almost always deciduous, the pseudobulbous plants have strict growing and resting periods. Most flower before entering a dormant period when they drop their leaves.
Light should be strong, especially near the end of the growth period. Early in the annual growth cycle, plants will tolerate less light, from 1,500 to 3,000 foot-candles. Plants grow best with light levels of 3,000 to 6,000 foot-candles, or one-half to three-fourths full sun. As pseudobulbs mature, harden them by giving slightly more light.
Temperatures reflect the fact these orchids are native to hot tropical areas and grow during the rainy summer months. During this growing period, day temperatures of 80° to 100° F and night temperatures of 60° to 65° F are beneficial. After growths mature, temperatures can be reduced to 55° F at night, with day temperatures of 70° to 85° F.

Brilliant Brad as always! Love the little face your wife added. Always great to add a bit of humor to things in life. I am trying several of these at the moment. So far, so good, but was concerned when I received them as they are planted in moss but are from a very reputable seller so I just try not to keep them too wet Thanks for another great, educational video. Cheers!

Hi Brad, Thanks for doing the video and I hope you post more regarding how you care for them since your care is different from the people in US and I think I should follow your routin since BC has a similar weather condition to London, UK. And yah I liked the eyes on the flower spike thanks your lovely wife for such a nice idea!

That is so amazing. I'd like to try out some of these or something in the catastinae family but I want something relatively compact and it has to smell yummy. (And be int-to warm growing) do you have any suggestions?

Quick question: should you water a catasetum-type (I have the Fdk. black pearl) when the plant is flowering? I know you're supposed to stop once it starts shedding leaves, however it looks like this one flowers after the leaves are gone. So should I water a little to sustain the flowers? thanks!

I also keep my catasetums in bark because of high humidity, but mine Cycnoches Golden Showers managed to lose a new spring growth because of a sudden bacterial rot at the base. It has produced a new growth just recently, so I hope it will bloom anyway.

Lumka hope it recovers for you , probably would have been worse with moss at the base

***** It is doing really very well, growing very fast. I hope to have a mature new pseudobulb at the end of fall.

Although Cattleya light is ideal, giving them a bit less light will give you a higher chance for male blooms. Maybe males aren't your preferred though. Planiceps is one of those hard to tell male from female. I believe yours is female due to the lack of yellow around the labellum.

***** very true, when a first seen the flower spike, I moved the orchids from the top shelf to the bottom shelf so the spike could develop in shaded conditions. It is a male flower it has ejected 2/3 of its pollinia at me! so funny when that happens...

I wonder where that adaptation comes from... Maybe the more available light means more energy for the eventual seed pod that the female flowers will produce...

Have you tried regulating the amount of light the Catasetums get? I heard that they change sex according to the amount of light which is cool.

The current flowers on your catesetums are female which are pretty dull. Most orchid growers would grow them at lower light levels to have a higher chance of getting male flowers which are much more spectacular. I grow mine at bright shade, Phalaenopsis light levels.

Nepo35 it is actually male, when a first seen the flower spike, I moved the orchids from the top shelf to the bottom shelf so the spike could develop in shaded conditions. It has ejected 2/3 of its pollinia at me already.

***** oh i see. I'm not too familiar with paniceps myself. But the male and female flowers for most catesetum for example, pileatum are so different! So I learnt from the experts of my area. Bright shade, heavy watering and heavy fertilising during growth period. My media is full of slow release fertilisers mixed in with moss and bark! In addition I add organic goat manure pellet in fert baskets with weekly dilution of gaviota. It may be a lot for orchids but catesetums are such heavy feeders that they can easily take it and plump right up during their growth period!
