My two orchids had leaves that were turning soft, so I investigated and found that ALL the roots in the pots were dead! The plants were still producing new roots above the potting medium. So I did purchase new medium from the company you partner with, and repotted them after cutting away all the dead dried out roots. So now I found this video! It appears I did the correct thing. By the way, my orchids repeatedly stay in bloom for 6 to 8 months! They are awesome!

In October my granddaughter gave me a very mature phalaenopsis that had a huge flower spike but had lost all but two of its blooms. Following your video I cut the four branches back to promising nodes, reduced water to 5 cc/day, and by Christmas had a total of 36 buds, half of them open. All are now open, and I have you to thank for the helpful advice..

Hi, be careful with watering the orchid every day, I doubt it needs it! Just water thoroughly when the roots and potting mix is dry or almost completely dry! 🧡

Agreed about the sphagnum moss. I added it as a top dressing, looked nice but then the orchid developed stem rot. Stayed wet too long. Luckily the rot was between two sets of roots. I chopped off the rotted portion of the stem and after an application of cinnamon, berried the roots that were in the air under bark. She has taken a couple of years to recover but is producing a flower spike after a long recovery. Good girl, such a trooper.

This is exactly the video i needed!! Screw the haters! I've had two small catts i bought about a month ago that continue to look dehydrated despite me watering them well and developing a system. I was suspecting it was due to their old roots dying after repotting and the transplant shock and this vid confirms it. Now one of them has a root growing directly downward and I'm at peace ✌🏽

I was having trouble with some of my orchids dehydrating. I was watering then twice a week and had them on a pebble tray trying to increase humidity, but it just wasn't enough. I ended up setting up a small orchidarium with a small humidifier, and they orchids started growing great. The pseudobulbs rehydrated, the roots are growing really well, etc. It's made a big difference.

This gave me some hope, I have a few cattleya types that look like that and particularly the leaves I noticed have some similar damage. I was freaking out thinking it was bugs (even though I don’t see any) or a virus. Now I’m thinking it could just be as simple as I recently reported and there’s very limited roots.

Thank you for this video. I've been at my wit's end with keeping my cattleya happy, because I moved and changed its environment multiple times in a short period of time. For some time it gave me false hope it was okay and started producing new roots and structures but they all decided to wither off when I left it in the moist medium for some time. And then I lost my nerves, tossed its medium, collected some rainwater, stopped watering it with water from the sink and now it lives above metal cup with rainwater and I am soaking it overnight once a week because i am afraid of losing what i have left of it to rot.

i have been watching a few vedio's on mounted orchids,since i though of the idea before seeing it, including yours, as i was looking for my solution witch i did not yet try, my solution is a 4-7 inch thick, hollowed out forked log with like 3/4th inch wall's ,than you pull a thick cloth wick though the log and stuff the remaining space with moss leaving a 3 inch wick out at the bottom, and that wick is kept on the bottom is kept in a reservoir of water(maybe place on big Plant Saucer with rocks, so you get evaporative moisture too),than you make some holes throughout the log and stuff some with moss, and theoretically you should only need to water when reservoir is empty ,and since you mount the orchid on the fork of this setup and place 2-3 roots in some holes of the log, then your theoretically giving the orchid a choice as to how much wetness it want's ,it can choose to kill the roots you put in the holes, or it can choose to put more roots in other holes,or just over the holes, and all the while you may just need to water once in a week or 2 depending on size of the reservoir, or maybe in your case every single day to keep the moss in log moist ,but you have no spillage, and no messy watering

That is so weird you uploaded this today! I just had to repot my Phal because the leaves were wrinkling but it just bloomed and even the newest leaf just started to wrinkle and the old roots rotted. Others were dark but they were plump so i don't know what do to about those. I repoted it in a terra cotta pot around Sept or August last year and the moss I used was aquarium moss :/ online it said sphagnum moss but not what I was expecting to I just used bark this time.

Hi. Thanks for your wonderful videos. I have a phalaenopsis orchid which is on spike... everything looks already fine on it. I have leaf growth, the spike has started to bud and ofcourse i have seen new root buds (but almost dont grow at all). What makes me worried is that i dont see any root in the container and some how i am almost sure that they are not in their best condition. Now the question is that each week i see one more air root which starts to dry out exactly at the base of the root, near the stem. I have lost 3 air roots druing last 3 weeks while new roots have not grown at all. All the active growth parts on the tips of the root have almost disappeared too. Is there anything to worry about? I am afraid if from a moment all good signs disappear and i loose my orchid. I will be glad if you help me

1st comment 😁😁, I think it make sense that the Roots just stopped growing at the top of the medium, the air is dry and potting it that way make it easier to rehydrate the plant and aerial roots do rely on humidity in addition. but great video mog 😊😊

Hey Danny Been a long time subscriber and I really find your content very informative. I recently got a collection of bulbophyllum orchids- one of them being a specimen sized Elizabeth Ann buckleberry 🤩- I see you’ve done beginner care tutorials for other orchid types, was wondering if a care video for beginners bulbophyllum edition is in the works? Unless I may have overlooked it, the bulbophyllum content on your page is scattered throughout the years with a general tutorial only present way at the beginnings of your channel. I’ve got three orchids this has happened to, so I’ll have to try what you did. But, I also have an older orchid that has gone crazy in the root department! Roots are growing out the holes, and are quite long, wrapping around the base. Also, there are a LOT of air roots growing out the top, and these are really long, too. Does this mean that plant needs repotting? Can I trim the roots? If I repot, what do I do with the roots growing out the holes?

Hi Danny. I have a cattleya with no roots and no new growth. I have her in ICU in moss in a glass. Will that work in this case?
@MissOrchidGirl3 жыл бұрын
Hi, ICU setups are great, but with Cattleyas it really depends on species or variety. Some only root in specific seasons and never in any other seasons. ICU's help with water loss, so they can maintain the orchid alive until the rooting season. But it's all variable as you can imagine. I hope it turns out ok!

Hi Dani, I have two Phals that just bloomed a few weeks ago that are now infested with fungus gnat larvae in the medium 😭😭 They were pretty recently repotted last summer about 6-7 months ago so the medium shouldn’t be bad yet, but the fungus gnats seem to say otherwise. Should I report these orchid even though they’re in bloom and I recently repotted them last summer?

I always wonder why we plant orchids in a clear pot if you’re just going to put the clear pot in another pot that blocks out all the light? Like this.
@MissOrchidGirl3 жыл бұрын
Because roots don't need light, even if some can photosynthesize, it's not their main fuction, it's a very secondary one and they are not very good at it, so light to roots makes no substantial impact on an orchid. Clear pots only let us see if the roots grow well and if the medium is dry, it's for us, not them. Hope this cleared it up for you ☺️

This video doesn't actually solve the problem it promises to. I have a dehydrated orchid that has tons of good roots in the medium that stays moist for like five days, but the leaves, despite an absence of crown rot, are just hilariously limp. Your orchid *didn't* actually have good roots. Not such an easy fix after all.

5 days isn’t enough for a severely dehydrated orchid to recover. The video does solve hydration issues if ur doing it correctly. L
