I’m glad that I can relearn sign language again. I am hard of hearing since birth. Then went to school with the deaf and hard of hearing class. Teachers taught me sign language by using their voice as they sign. Even the students taught me to sign too. After high school, I went to work in the real world and slowly forgotten because I didn’t ran into or even saw deaf people. So I hanged around with hearing people and didn’t use my hands to talk to them. So now I want to learn ASL again.

Anyone having trouble keeping up? Turn on your closed captions. There’s a playback option and you can slow the speed down to a quarter ( .25x) of the original speed. Helps a lot to read the interpretation first, and then say/think/write (your choice) his actual signs, word for word. So you can really comprehend the interpretation 😘 you won’t regret it!

I was going to say the same thing. I use that sign differently too. I just say boy, girl, man, woman.

What about people who use gender non binary pronouns?

I personally just fingerspell 'non binary' or I would sign NOT fs-BINARY, this situation has come up before in conversation and the person who I was talking to understood perfectly.

I have a non-binary peer in my Professions in Deafness program and they firstly inform what they prefer to be called and whatnot by fingerspelling. If someone points to a NB person across the room to describe them, some people will point, say their birth gender (whether it be boy or girl), and then inform the person that they are NB and how they should be addressed.

You learn by watching and understanding. It's called immersion. Besides, ASL doesn't work like other languages, you can't just translate it word for word into English.

Please update first part #1. this as this is exclusive and discriminates against Trans and non-binary individuals. We can't assume gender based on their appearance. We can identify their gender only if they are out about their identity. Also we don't use the term "sex" to describe their gender anymore. Thank youl.
