I just realized why I was never successful in Algebra when I was young. Won't say how old I am but I learned PEMDAS as Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. This whole time I thought the order was exactly that. Addition before subtraction and multiplication before division. Now I know why I struggled so much in Algebra. I wish we had internet, and you tube back when I was at school. I am here today learning to teach my middle school aged child.

I was taught BODMAS - Brackets Of Division Multiplication Addition Subtraction. However the left/right priority was also taught I wouldn't accept an expression with the ./. division sign, preferring the ------ to show a division. As you show later at 14mins,

It is interesting that you included an explicit multiplication sign in the expression 35-3(4^2-10). Can you explain why? Don't implied multiplication and expressed multiplication yield the same result?

PEMDAS can still be used, you just have to remember the rule of left to right when performing Multiplication / Division and Addition / Subtraction. If it's learned correctly, then it still works. P-E-MD-AS. I see WHY you're saying that you don't like it though. I see people using it wrong often because they never learned the rule (or, as you say, they forgot it). Good lesson! 👍

According to the rules taught in German schools: 6/2(1+2) = 1 parentheses, exponents, IMPLIED MULTIPLIKATION, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction 6/2(1+2)= 6/ 2(3) = 6/ 2*3 = 6 [fraction bar] 2*3 = 6/6 = 1 I calculated it with a calculator prescribed by the German school authorities. TI calculators are banned in German schools because they calculate according to PEMDAS CASIO pocket calculators, FX-82DE, are required in German schools because they calculate according to PEJMDAS Yes, MDAS is still used up to the 4th grade, but when higher mathematics is taught, PEJMDAS is normal

One question no one never answers is what is the practical application of Order of Operations. Why does it matter, left-to-right. PEMDAS BODMAS. I can see two solutions but what is the meaning or purpose. My books from 1970s show a strict left to right. P then E then M then D then A then S. I have test papers from that era that's how we were taught. I understand people today using this in a calculator get diff answer than the old method but in 1973 none of were using calculators, my question remains why does it even matter? love your videos, especially, the combination and permutations videos. I'll keep watching.

the reason multiplication and division are at the same level is that division doesn't exist, division is a multiplication, 15/5 is really 15*1/5 for this example it would be 10*(1/5)*2 so you could do the (1/5)*2*10 if you wanted to or 2*10*(1/5) the same is true with subtraction it doesn't really exist, it is an addition 4+6-9 is really 4+6+(-9)

Another example: 10/ 5x. x=2 first you have to calculate 5x. 5*2 = 10 ( IMPLIED MULTIPLIKATION before multiplication and division) then 10/10 = 1 And now I show that PEMDAS is wrong: 10/ 5x. x=2 10/5 *x= 2/1 *x= 2 *2 = 4. In practice, this method of calculation leads to incorrect results, because IMPLIED MULTIPLIKATION was ignored

Mnemonic devices such as PEMDAS or BODMAS can be misinterpreted and are therefore not necessary in order to understand how the Order of Operations functions. Sadly, some people need a "crutch". Mnemonic devices are not meant to be taken literally. Just learn the four basic rules used to evaluate math expressions.
@hemrajue34342 жыл бұрын
Order of operations has to be followed strictly otherwise we wrong. Eg. 4÷2^2=? 4÷2×2=2×2=4 incorrect 4÷2^2=4÷4=1 correct.
@timfronimos4592 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree more. Where and why did they change the way this is taught. I remember when so-called New Math came along in late 60s early 70s. It took a whole sheet of paper to solve one division problem One question never answers is what is the practical application of Order of Operations. Why does it matter, left-to-right. PEMDAS BODMAS. I can see two solutions but what is the meaning or purpose. My books from 1970s show a strict left to right. P then E then M then D then A then S. I have my test papers from that era.
@hemrajue34342 жыл бұрын
@@timfronimos459 i don't know about your old books. If we follow strictly the PEMDAS rule, there is no necessity to go from left to right. Since multiplication and division have the same priority, to solve this issue, it's necessary to go from left to right.

@MathAndScience If all of 20 minutes or so is needed to make a RoT (Rule of Thumb) easy to use, then said RoT was poorly designed. Poor design is indeed the issue with BIDMAS/PEMDAS/&c. The problem is that NOT all the RoT's letters are the 1st letters of OPERATIONS. At this point the RoT's designer should have removed the D & the S from the RoT, to have only BIMA (or PEMA, &c) left. Because any person teaching maths (& ALL mathematicians) should KNOW that neither division nor subtraction is an OPERATION. THIS POINT is what any-&-all these many videos should have addressed right at its start, ie the video should have DEBUNKED the RoT. ANY attempt at sort-of validating the presence of the D & S shows that the video's author should NOT be placed at the front of a classroom ADDRESSING the students, but be sitting WITH the other students. I am truly sick-&-tired of teachers slavishly adhering to incorrect curriculum--especially when such a teacher KNOWS that the curriculum is wrong! I have no idea whether YOU are 1 of those teachers (who KNOWS that the curriculum is wrong), because by 1:40 I had heard enough to validate stopping the video there.
