I am a 61 year old man and this anime hit home hard in many ways. It brought back so many memories from my high school years. I was a loner too who in retrospect was also saved by being forced to join a club. Circumstances too numerous to list here forced me to eventually take the lead of the club and I put my heart and soul to keep it going because I felt responsible for it. And in the club there was also a nice girl who at first I was unaware had feelings for me. After some time one day, since I wasn't making any kind of moves toward her, she told me with tears in her eyes that she just couldn't remain in the club anymore. What I did next I have regretted for the rest of my life: I just pretended I didn't care and told her to have a good life. I rejected her because I thought I was too much of an outcast to be compatible with her. It was obvious that wasn't an obstacle for her, but it was for me in my mind. I thought she deserved better and let her go. I was a dumbass idiot. Luckily I got out of my loner shell when I go into college and made a few friends there. Unlike some people here I cannot watch this anime again. It would be too painful in many ways to relieve all that all over again.

@piotr0042 жыл бұрын
Holy shit, your story sounds so similar to this anime's story. What was the purpose of your club (like what was its theme)? And did that girl join the club only after you (so it is probable that she liked you earlier and joined the club just to be close to you) or was she in the club already when you joined it (so she could develop feelings for you thanks to seeing how you were active in that club)?
@priestpega2 жыл бұрын
@@piotr004 At that time all the school clubs were pretty boring, so me, my brother and a group of guys decided to submit the creation of a martial arts club since this was during the 70's kung fu craze. Nothing could be more cool than that. Reluctantly the school principal accepted and the "Dragons" club was created. At the beginning this girl was not a member, but she was dating one of our club members. However their relationship was short-lived and they broke up while still remaining good friends. Then later she joined the club and remained a member for a whole year. Her ex-boyfriend even tried to hook me up with her, but I declined stating it would be wrong for me to do that since he was my friend and I knew she used to date him. Like I said, I was an idiot. I wish I could turn back time and fix my stupidity.

@@priestpega Ah, I see the picture clearer now, thank you! Honestly speaking, I would reject that girl in that situation too, because, as you said, "it would be wrong for me to do that since he was my friend and I knew she used to date him." It would be weird, and "Her ex-boyfriend even tried to hook me up with her" is even weirder. Dating a girl who is an ex of one of your friends is always risky (a lot of friend circles are destroyed by acts like this). This whole situation seems like the girl was rather unstable emotionally (like she is "trying out" one friend after another from the same circle of friends). Of course, I do know the whole situation, but based on what you wrote - I do not think you missed out much...

I know a Yui in my life... but I chose another person. The wrong person. I didn't realize that she had feelings for me until waaaay later. We met eachother again at some reunion party years later when she came out with it and said that she used to be in love with me. I can still feel my facial expression change to a shocked one when she said that since no girl has ever told me that. I joked with her by saying that it must've been traumatic for her to feel like that; the news not completely sinking in. One awkward silence and a neck scratch later, I was honest with her and told her that I actually thought she was really cute and a sweet person (which she still is) but I always thought that she was just being nice to me like she was with everyone else. As we talked, I started feeling awful since I used to go to her when I needed dating advice or was going through girl troubles. I can only imagine how she felt.. the constant punches to the gut I must've put her through. I then told her that if she would've said something then, I would've seriously thought about it. She proceeded to give me a look of disappointment followed by a weak smile. I could've been wrong since my mind was going through a whirlwind of emotions. From the depression stage of my sorta recent breakup to receiving a late confession (If you can call it that) from this beautiful girl in front of me. Really felt like one of those "What could've been" conversations. We actually exchanged contact information, and we actually talk at least once a week, usually about jobs, family, friends, careers. It honestly feels nice being in contact with someone like that again, it's really like a breath of fresh air. I've really forgotten how infectious her bubbly attitude is. Every time I see her name pop up on my phone, my heart skips a beat. Now I don't mean that in a romantic way, but it sure does feel great having a female that isn't family related text you, not because they need something from me or a favor but.... simply because they want to. It's almost annoying how she knows exactly what to say but I didn't know that it was something I really needed. She's really helping me through my breakup and I'm currently very grateful towards her even if she doesn't know it. I should consider myself lucky that I managed to regain someone who I didn't know was precious to me back in my life. I'll be very careful to not make the mistake of confusing my gratitude towards her for premature romantic feelings. For the time being, I'm perfectly content with the way things are as of now, I couldn't bare the idea of disappointing someone as pure as her. I'm just not ready to fall in love again and I'm definitely not ready to lose another friend. Perhaps maybe in the future, who knows.

I love Oreigaru so much! Yui is one of my favorite characters of all time, and was my favorite in this series. Shes such a tragic character, and was not only the emotional tether for both Yukino and Hachiman. She was also ironically the strongest willed character in the series. She has multiple instances where she could have had Hachiman, but doing so would have cut off her relationship with Yukino. Due to her greed, she was never going to have her wish granted. She was never going to have both a Romantic Relationship with Hachiman, and a best friendship with Yukino. Ironcially her wish does get granted. But only for Hachiman and Yukino. Because unlike Yukino she has the strength of will to maintain these relationships depsite her crush, hooking up with someone else. Its incredible to me that she has more power than both of them, is more mature than both of them , and tethers both of them the most. Though ends up losing the most between the three. Yuis incredibly tragic, and this isnt enough to summarize it. I might personally have to make a character analysis about her, cause I havent seen anyone else do it.

This is my first time watching one of your videos... You just earned a subscription. I had the hardest time figuring out why this anime I picked up simply because I was bored and contained incredibly low stakes (at first glance at least) effected me so deeply; and you fully explained why. The entire time I watched this anime I kept thinking how much easier everything would be if the characters were honest with themselves and with each other, but it didn't bother me because without realizing it I was heavily relating to the main trio and each of their struggles. At surface level I had nearly forgotten how difficult alot of people find emotional communication, it's something I had the privilege of refining in the family I grew up in, however this something that's especially difficult during highschool as everyone struggles to find themselves. I've watched other Rom Com anime but Snafu truly felt like it was in a league of its own P.S. Yui was my favorite by an incredibly small margin (I just wanted the entire trio to be happy) which made it so much more heartbreaking to watch as Hikkigaya made the choice we all knew he would. The shows not a masterpiece but, definitely artistically brilliant for making me feel the way it did.

Excellent review of one of the very best love triangles in anime. What makes this atypical is that all three very much love and care for the other two which is the source of the subtextual complexity. No one wants the other one to be hurt. As a side note, all three of the Yukinoshita females have a positive reaction to Hachiman. We never see or hear of Mr. Yukinoshita, but in the LN, it's said that Hachiman is very much like Mr. Yukinoshita which explains the attraction. At the very end, Yukino tells Hachiman that her mother has grown fond of you, and she wants you to attend a family dinner. Just one more episode of Hachiman at that dinner surrounded by Yukinoshita's would have been hilarious and comedic gold watching him squirm, but it never happened. But a family dinner in that situation, is the family thinking ahead about a new family member! Mr. Yukinoshita would probably be keen to add a male because he has been surrounded by females all his married life.

@@AnimeInRetrospect Yeah, can commiserate. But any guy who marries Sweetheart Yui will get one of the best mother-in-laws in the entire Universe. Yui's mom would accept a son-in-law like he were her own son. And if you have been or are married, you know how important a mother-in-law can be to a happy marriage. And as for the (Hachiman x Yui) ship, Yui would never have been happy with Hachiman, and she says as much in S3 EP10 ( I think) were she complains that she does not understand the things he says or does. Yukino understands Hachiman and she can be quite blunt in telling him what she thinks. But that is what he likes in a woman as we see him with Komachi, Shizuka, and even Haruno. I just gotta say, this video was super well-made. Based on the production quality, I thought your channel would be way bigger. I really like the use of funny clips interspersed between the more dense analysis. Super interested to see more of your work. One comment on the music-- I totally agree that it is generally just serviceable, but I do think it nails the right moments. There was a particular scene in episode 11 of the final season where I stopped and thought to myself, "that's really cool". More specifically, it's the one where Hachiman was pulling away Yukino's fingers and they synced it to the guitar. It's the little stuff like that which to me elevates an otherwise "just alright" OST. Also, yeah. Harumodoki is a fucking banger. Easily one of my favorite openings of any series. Not only is it a great track, but the visuals are beautifully done (although I prefer the first version that is only found on youtube for some reason). It really does leave a huge impression after coming off season 1.

Damn you. I knew this hit different when I watched this. 2 Days later I reminisce with my mate, and I realise....F U K ... I was Yui all along. The impact of a show I thought was just gonna be another haha Harem-ish thingy. Couldnt have been more wrong.

Op 1 - is a great song both as an op and an insert song when it counts. Op 3 - is my favorite among the 3. Op 2 - specifically the second version from episode 3 onwards tells a lot about the endgame of the series (if the subtitles of the op is accurate) even if people haven't read the light novel.

Im kinda fond of iroha, her being all cheeky and whatnot. Though i suppose thats why everything Oregairu has the trio or Yui, Iroha, and Yukino. Saki Kawasaki is also 😍 wish there was a figure of her too

@@AnimeInRetrospect mention not. I was looking for some nice takes on the series, as I just finished it today. And I found yours. And by "nice", I mean obviously someone who understands the importance of the work. I didn't agree with you on everything (I like Iroha for one), but I don't need to. Good job on making this one, and see you on some other take like this... hopefully.

The scene where Hachiman has to choose which bowl of food to eat at home and proceeds to ask Komachi, "Aren't they the same?" (or more intuitively aren't they of equal worth?) Both "bowls" are an acceptable choice, but only one can be chosen. That's why it hurt so much for either side. It wasn't right vs. wrong. Both choices were correct, just different. That IS a metaphor for the main heroines btw. Although, I DO agree with his choice of the right bowl.

I'm more flabbergasted by Anohana being a 10 when Angel Beats/Plastic Memories is listed as a 6. Also, it should be listed as a war crime the OG Clannad is a 5/10. and so many Shounen being so high up (especially JJBA parts 1&2 being a 9/10.) And Grimgar being 7/10 offends me personally but I know that was the average.

Did you watch the last OVA? I liked it, It felt comforting seeing them all get along well. And Yui bravely taking Hiki on a date out of nowhere made me so surprised and hesitant at the same time, I am glad they continued beeing friends even with a some what acceptable awkwardness between them. And SHE FINALLY CONFESSED! That shocked me but it felt so good watching her finally let everything out even tho the two knew nothing would change. Great OVA really. And the sister is the president of the club now? Wow you go Komachi!
@AnimeInRetrospect10 ай бұрын
I did! Have some of the same sentiments you do, and my highlight is definitely how Yukino tolerates Yui’s homewrecking attempts. Yui is not at all subtle about it but Yukino isn’t throwing her under the bus for it - true besties!
@davii_ms10 ай бұрын
@@AnimeInRetrospect True! I love their friendship it just shows that despite Yui beeing obvious about her feelings, even making sure Yukino knows about it, Yukino knows she won't do anything that would hurt her. They are a lot more mature.

And the path i chose was to develop a fake confidence and change my personalities according to people i was talking to. Someone saw through me like i was transparent. I am relatively new to anime and I tried watching this show on Crunchy Roll in 2021 but I dropped it after the episode where the pink-haired girl came to thank him for saving her dog and he just blew her off and used the stupid excuse of "She is nice because she wants something" and it really made him hate him because even though I can understand being a recluse, being a cynical jerk to others in that extent is just too much. I had no idea he actually undergoes an evolution and drops the cynical loner a-hole attitude, mainly because most other videos and comments about the show were usually just people praising and idealising his loner lifestyle. Also, maybe it's partly because my own teenage experience was different from those in Japan or the west as I was born and raised in Nigeria.
