Hachiman is true to his word. he really "hated" nice girls. Yukino, a not nice girl would openly criticize and sometimes harshly disagree with Hachiman's damaging actions without pulling any punches. She was mostly genuine to hachiman from the start the exact thing he wished in ep8 season 2 if i am correct. While Yui failed to openly be genuine to Hachiman particularly regarding to the latter's unhealthy social actions, afraid to lose him if she ever overstep. If Hachiman is incorrigible, he would 100% choose Yui but he is not a incorrigible person. Very far from it. Hachiman chose the one who would correct him when he is wrong, who would not be afraid to speak her mind, someone who deeply cares for Hachiman that she'd rather risk her relationship with him if that is what it takes for him to change to a better person. Yui is definitely the best girl of the anime and the general public/average person, but Yukino is the best girl for Hachiman. The OVA will drop in few months guys!!

@@IntuitionVE Did you experience the same things or are you a psychology student ? Oregairu always hit different for me since i'm basically hachiman. I didn't get the romantic arc tho. So yeah i can only congratulate you for this video, this sums it up perfectly. When you've reached the bottom pit of loneliness you obtain the ability to see through anyone. It's really cool to being able to understand people easily, but idk if it's worth it. Being alone is the worst suffering, even if it bulds up your mental fortitude having to go through an existential crisis and the need to disappear is hard. To anyone reading this : if you have people in your surroundings that tends to be like hachiman please interact with them, even just saying hello is a big thing for loners. We're probably the most genuine people out there too, so you'll probably build a strong relationship with us, weither it's romantic or a simple friendship. But don't wait for them to be so deep into those negative feelings because we're not all the same when we start questioning why we're alive, our worth in the world, going through every bad moments/regrets in our life and trying to find positive out of it to move on. People can go through a lot like me, people can give up and choose death right away ... I'm not asking you to save everyone, i'm just saying that "wasting" 30 seconds of your life saying hello can save a life. ♥ ps : English is not my first language, so you can reformulate the parts you don't get, it's not hard to understand anyway. The hardest part is putting yourself in the other guy shoes.

"is your feelings that simple to be described in just a single word?" - Hiratsukai sensei, S3 Ep 10 That word stuck on my head the most when watching this anime, i always has a feeling in my head that for some reason cant be described, i was told that there is no such thing and if you dont know the feeling how can you fix it. But this quote is like telling me that having this feeling is normal for a human being and we shouldn't rush for an answer.

I always wanted to know what did she meant by being "drunk"... But i never got that answer. After I watched this and finally got it I felt so relieved for some reason cause it was very confusing. There are also several other answers i got and it... just feels so god damn good to finally know them. While i have already watched oregairu 3 times I had never got these answers so i thank you from the bottom of my heart.

This show really resonates with me because I can completely get hachimon . I have most of the feelings he had throughout the show and even now I have a lot of those . The nice girls and youth quotes he says are especially true and I do generally believe before he found love everything he said is 100 percent true . I also believe in the words of kiyotaka on his quote of about the great lie known as equality. It's a lie people say to make up for what they lack . Because it's much easier to tell everyone it's not me it's because of one reason or another . Humans are born equal that is true however the second after that stops . Be it our natural talents are hard work or society or even how we dress . However when someone is failing they cry and say everyone should be equal but as kiyotaka says that impossible and it's why equality is the biggest lie.

Evolutionary biologist here, wanted to add a note: The science presented in this video is definitely the basis of Hachiman's philosophy and presented as true by the author, so it makes sense to discuss in the context of this video. HOWEVER, explaining modern human behavior in terms of evolutionary drivers ranges from incomplete to outright pseudoscience depending on who you ask. Most notably for the context of this video, the depiction of hierarchies as discussed here as "natural" is very debatable, and often used to justify not changing them. For instance many human societies have no de facto leader, and instead call on different members to lead in different situations depending on who knows the most. When we look to non-human animals, dominance structures aren't all that common. It requires a pretty complex brain to keep track of who is over whom, recognize a leader and understand their intentions, etc. All of that is to say that the science presented here does a good job at describing how the society Hachiman is in is cutting structured, but does a poor job of describing why that structure exists. Within the fiction of the show those drivers are at play and so this is worth discussing, but viewers should think of it more like a philosophy or life motto than scientific fact.

A lot of times, social cliques form because of shared quirks in personality. Which is why Hayato's group is different from Hachiman's group. The problem is Hachiman is an introvert. Which makes creating relationships difficult for him. Not to mention being more prone to stress. Hence why he couldn't succeed in his younger years. But he can talk to Yukino without any issues. They're both just tailored for a different world, or time period. Hence why Shizuka-sensei had to step in. And put them in a more controlled social environment. Get them away from the monotony of everyday life. As well as people in the crowd. Who could be a negative influence on them. And just like that. The main cast is able to actually build something in their life. Without having to "fake" anything.

I got hooked on this video. This was amazing, and I just felt awe at the end that I just had to sit in. I love the topic of socially outcasted, anxious or awkward people. I just cannot fathom that anyone does not want friends, genuine bonds, except for antisocial people of course. There's something just holds them back. This video is just more reason to keep trying. That hill that I can't seem to cross, will only be easier after I look what's over it. It just sucks that I can't physically see it, and maybe it's not as steep as expected, or that I'm scared of how much there is in order to get to it.

An interesting part about Oregairu to me is Hachiman's white haired nerdy friend. He's definitely had similar experiences with ostracism and bullying as both Hachiman and Yukino had, yet he seems to have responded to them in an entirely different way. Why is that? Furthermore, if Hachiman wasn't lucky enough to have Hiratsuka, I wonder what would have happened to both him and Yukino.

Very well written video essay. I particularly liked the psychoanalysis and use of actual research studies to do a case study on why Hachiman acts the way that he does. Such an interesting anime with a unique main character. What really strikes me is how this show focuses on topics of social hierarchy, dynamics, relationships, etc. and how a cynical loner sees and navigates such things, all while being on a quest to be genuine with himself and other people he truly cares about. I think these are relatable topics to lots of people at some point in their life, which is why I completely loved the first season. However as the show continued, by the 3rd season I didn’t enjoy the show that much personally. My main gripe was how the writing and dialogue seemed to get more subtle and cryptic. To the point that I wasn’t too sure of character motivations at times and felt confused. Also, at this point I had simply gotten older and I wanted to yell, “JUST COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER”. But I know this is a nuanced story of teenagers who are still trying to figure out life, so I get it. Anyways, I really appreciate this video essay. You clearly understand these characters and this story very well, and it made me understand the show way better than when I had watched it by myself initially. I think I had just got lost in the drama and cryptic writing of this anime haha, but your video is excellent and makes me appreciate the anime much more as a whole. Thanks for coming to my TED talk lol

Ok this is gonna sound bad but of all of the 1000s of anime I’ve watched this one night actually be the 2 closest thing to perfect that I’ve ever seen. (Not counting action anime or movies) the storyline is second only to toradora. And the characters are sometimes just as good as them. The main character was a perfect illustration of how I saw myself in highschool when I first watched the first season. Then when I watched season 2 and 3 it’s like it matured along with me and I realized in highschool I wasn’t a lone wolf … I was just alone, even when I didn’t want to be I had problems with interacting with people. Then I grew up made some strong friendships and everything turned around. But it’s still not sunshine and rainbows, do I have friends because we’re close or so I won’t be alone… are we really friends? I usually ignore these thoughts but they least creep back in. This is forever one of my favorite and most relatable anime.

I'm gonna get a bit personal and say, this feels like a call out for me specifically. I've always related to hachiman on a very deep level due to similar experiences. What really struck a deep chord with me was the altruism, the ideal self, and the avoidance these were all things I did that have had a significant impact on my life and that I'm still to this day trying to work my way through. Having this video so clearly address all of these things and their effect on some ones life and outlook on said life just hit different. The way hachiman overcame these was very inspiring because it gave me hope that I could also change for the better and live a more satisfying life. so to end this comment I'd like to thank you for making this video, because it allowed me to see this story without some of the biases i have from being so similar to the main character and really re-evaluate everything.

Thank you so much for breaking down this show. My understanding was halfway there and never as clear as yours. So to sum up, the show explores the (cruel) social hierarchy, reluctance to show your true self/defense mechanisms, and the necessity for identity in a relationship? Can anyone correct me if im missing something?
