To anybody who hasn’t flown a helicopter before I assure you: this pilot’s skill is beyond incredible, perhaps even ethereal! Sincerely, a student helicopter pilot who one day hopes to get sling loading down. It’s like I’m learning to drive, somebody somewhere is driving the Corvette I hope to one day drive, while this guy’s a Formula 1 race car driver. Compared to him I’m just getting behind the wheel.

Tim Hofmeister$250 put back per hour for maintenance, 150 for insurance, 100 for the pilot and 50 for the ground crew fuel 26 gallons an hour a $5.00 a gallon $130. $680.00 is what has to be made, they are most likely charging around $800.00 to 900 per hour. He is hauling 8 or so trees every load that takes less than 30 seconds. That's almost 100 trees an hour. I think that it is the most efficient way to harvest trees in a farm that is that big, no trucks or ATVs tearing up the ground, only one worker hooking up the trees and one pilot, 2 -3 truck drivers. It's also less invasive than having a bunch of guys dragging trees around and possibly damaging the other trees that are there that you want to sell next year.

To those folks who question this video, this is just a day in the life of this guy and MANY others like him here in Oregon during this time of year. Noble Tree Farm is just down the road, and we see this action a lot. We start harvesting trees the beginning of November. One of my old students does this very kind of work...at first I thought it was him! lol It's a hell of a job, takes great skill...for the whole crew, not just the pilot.

@@codyking4848 It's a magnetic connection. There is a guy on the grounds who grabs the end of the line and connects the two. The pilot then turns on the magnet. Then he flies it to the unloading zone and released the magnetic connection. That makes it drop. That's why he can go so fast. It's really crazy being there watching them do this! There are also guys cutting the trees and others putting them in bunches with a nylon wrap with the magnet on the end. They can cut about 650 to 700 trees in a day! You get it done as fast as possible because it costs a lot for the helicopter rental.

Years ago I watched a fellow fly a little flivver and spray cranberry bogs in Harwich, Mass. The way he flew about four feet off the ground, reached the end of his run, then flipped that helicopter over so he was now in a position to spray a row twenty feet away was sort of like watching a yoyo wizard at work, playing with the thing. People like this are gifted. Phenomenal. Like the copter is part of them.

There is some serious talent going on here! I'm a helicopter pilot and I would never attempt to land loads during such a dramatic swing. What disturbs me about this video is how the pilot appears to have the cyclic full forward prior to having the load released. If for any reason the line got snagged, his machine would nose straight into the ground.

The vast majority of fuel for a helicopter is just to keep it aloft. In fact, helicopters are more efficient when flying rather than hovering, but that may not apply to quick starts and stops like this. A BIG part of helicopter costs is the required maintenance after every so many hours of flight. Even if it takes a little more fuel, the quicker you get the job done, the fewer hours you put on the aircraft.
@Jake0Miller

Its all about speed in order to make the cost of operating the helicopter worth it! Break neck pace. Now that said, the pilot is operating that poor Bell 206B Jet Ranger right to its limit. An over torque or loss of tail rotor effectiveness are risks with anything other than perfect pilot skills. Also mechanical failure from the hook release mechanism would be disastrous. But its nice to see a helicopter flown to such perfection and make short work of something laborious and complex like harvesting Christmas trees in the Oregon forest!
@xpetki

Most people don't understand the dynamics of cost operations vs what it takes to make a buck and what it takes to make a machine perform under constant conditions whjile pushing the envelope with shitty weather also. At the end of the day = busted skids and a jammed spine.. did this with herbaceous weed spraying in a 206-B and it was even more so, the 206-L had the power vs the 206-B factor in the extreme heat and humidity we worked in and it was a bad combination.

you people questioning should go try and do this, incredibly difficult, constant adjustments, and timing.. requires 100% focus the entire duration or you are dead... have some respect. This is wildly good control.

What is just as amazing are the chockermen hooking and unhooking those trees from the chopper. They have to hookup the bundle of trees and then unhook each bundle. One of the most dangerous jobs in the forest.

This skill level can be achieved only by extreme lazyness. It is absolutely logical, that the guy just wants to be finished in half time, so he can go home and do nothing. No man ever worked with such a speed for an hourly wage.
@erkq
@erkq 11 жыл бұрын
No, but a man sure flies with such speed when his aircraft costs somewhere North of $500 per hour to operate! It's not like driving a car, you know...
@rogerpe
@rogerpe 11 жыл бұрын
erkq Propably closer to 5000 dollars per hour to operate if all costs are calculated :)
@erkq
@erkq 11 жыл бұрын
rogerpe Bell Jet Rangers cost about like a Hughes 500 to operate. That $500 includes TBO maintenance reserve, fuel, pilot, insurance. Does not include unscheduled maintenance though... never can tell about that though it's generally pretty low because of the TBO times.

The pilot should start a training class for the youth right now. I bet, if they got thousands of pilots like this, it will be awesome. But not just for harvesting a Christmas tree, but for any other positives purposes. Respect.
