Paul, I relocated to North Bend in 2020. You mentioned (11:56) how Coos Bay is more urban than Florence. Hey, I lived for 60 years in cities such as San Francisco, Sacramento, and Vancouver, WA. Honestly, This town seems like a ghost town to me!

To anyone who has a desire to get away from the bustling way of life in major cities such as Portland, Seattle, etc (and if you're financially able), check out North Bend/Coos bay. I did, and I have no regrets!

Florence feels like a retirement community, Coos Bay/North Bend has a more eclectic population and of course, we have a college. And of course we have the North Spit. Wonderful place. I much prefer Coos Bay.

Could you go into more detail about the types of medical facilities available in Coos Bay? Thinking of moving to the area and dragging the whole crew with me lol. My brother did recently get a cancer diagnosis but it is in remission. However if it came back again it would be concerning if there wasn’t facilities that could work for long term care there should he need it. I am also in the VA system myself and haven’t been able to get an idea of what the VA medical facilities are like down there and how long it may take to get in to see a doctor. Currently assigned to a physician in Lincoln City because Newport is full so it’s quite the drive for me from Waldport and hoping for a better experience down there but have no idea how big the facility is there. Kinda difficult to see how big the clinic is from the one image I have seen on the website.

Lived in Coos Bay for 6 years, loved the climate and things to do, but no work there! Now on social security, I would consider returning. Riedsport is between both towns, an easy drive both ways, so, lower home prices, nice drive for better shopping, I would move there more likely.

There’s work, you just have to accept what work there is. I lived there for 20 years. My f/t job was as a commercial fisherman on shrimp/drag/crab boats. I realize not everyone can do that, BUT in what free time I had, I’d make $ foraging for wild mushrooms and other gourmet edibles the forest has to offer (e.g. huckleberries, sea bean, fiddlehead fern, etc).

@@spidermight8054I worked as a care giver for the elderly, and then in retail, another low pay job. Looking back, I found custom wood crafts making bowls, spoons, small items not needing expensive shop equipment could make 60K per year selling locally and on the internet. Cost to set up with a 12 x 12 foot shop would be around 10K max with a lean to for outside storage. Local Pacific maple is a great wood to use and is easy to find. I even kept some moving to Georgia. It would be a nice trip with a trailer to get more of this fine wood in Oregon. This class of wood work would only need 18 inch logs but they would need to be painted at each end right after sawing to avoid checking and cracks.

Craigslist, Oregon Coast is a good venue for checking out prices. It seems to be ~$1200/mo for a basic decent rental along the coast. Coos Bay & N. Bend are cheaper generally I think.
