Loved the video of the OPRR's route in the snow! Wished you would have zoomed in on the Oregon Rail Heritage Center so folks would come to know more about it. Surprising that many people in Portland do not know it exists.

Growing up, I would visit my grandfather, a locomotive engineer with the CNR, who lived close to CN's Calder yards at the north side of Edmonton. He retired in 1963, having joined the (then) Grand Trunk in Winnipeg in 1912-13. He went overseas to France with the Canadian Army in January 1915; In 1919 resumed to his job as a loco fireman after discharge from the Army. By 1925 he was an engineer, running between Winnipeg and Edmonton. He relocated to Edmonton in 1926, and raised a large family in Calder. I remember the GMD-1's at Calder quite well - even had a few cab rides. They continued work at Calder for 20-25 years after his retirement - I recall seeing 2 or 3 units leading the N.A.R. way freight, or doing yard moves. There were still 5 or 6 GMD-1's working near Toronto quite recently; I'm not sure if any remain at Calder. You've kept your GMD-1 in beautiful shape - she looks like she has a good few miles in her yet. Thanks for posting this.

Nice video, love the GMD-1 action, even though they're retired on our lines now, as a kid there wasn't anything like the GMD-1 going through Oshawa, but I only got to see it a few times considering it was old and retired as I grew up. Still, its nice to see Canadian Creations working elsewhere :)

Excellent! How fun. Love the muffled sounds from the snowfall. The music was a perfect choice and you used it to the right effect and in the right amount with breaks. Great job and I hope there are more vids to come! I like learning as much as possible about the railroads of the Portland,OR area.

I like the look of GMD-1s, and Genset engines. They remind me a lot of early ALCO road switchers like thr RS-1, RS-2, and RS-3.

Hi Graffiti dog art its funny you mentioned that these engines do remind me a lot of Alco RS 1, RS 2 , & R S 3 diesels it's like an EMD version of them. I'm such a fan of all of these engines as well.

GMD1's spent many years on Vancouver Island, working the Cowichan and Tidewater Subdivisions for the CNR, so the West Coast isn't completely foreign territory!

This engine is amazing! I've taken a cab ride in it several times thanks to the friendly folks at OPRR and ORHC, and the Saturday excursions. My question is, why do you guys run it long hood forward? It's meant for the long hood to be connected to the train, but I understand if it is a pain to turn the seat around and run it that way. At least during the excursions.
@TrainsNStuff7 жыл бұрын
I didn't notice, it has marker lights still! That's a cool feature for the GMD-1.

sweet little setup, seen the GMD's before here and there, always thought they were a knockoff of ALCO's RS series, I remember the description called for a little higher HP than a SW 1500, but a lighter axle weight than a regular geep, query is, did GM produce a three axle version?, or only a two axle version.
@aeyb7013 жыл бұрын
Yes, CN originally had 6 axle 1000-series units along with the 1900-series 4-axle ones. The latter were steam generator equipped for branch line passenger service, as well as freight. Some worked out of Toronto in the mid 1960’s hauling commuters.

Why the Canadian flags if the train is in Oregon?
@Stmtrolleyguy8 жыл бұрын
The locomotive was a model designed and built specifically for Canada, and the railroad is in Portland - a stone's throw away from Canada. There's a Canadian flag on one side of the hood, and a US flag on the other.
