In this video I go over Emacs org mode's powerful citation and footnote features. It allows you to easily cite in your org files from BibTeX files and customize formatting in exported LaTeX and HTML. Feel free to leave a comment with any questions, I try to reply to all of them!

Amazing video! I configured my Emacs to cite Zotero entries, really cool! The built-in footnote functionality is very handy to use, thank you.

This is awesome! I was wondering if there's an easy way to display the footnote text to the side of where it appears in the main text within the emacs buffer (not relying on any exports to other formats)? I'm looking for something similar in look to Google Docs comments, as I like how you don't have to leave the context to look at some text and go back again.

how do u make your bullet lists have different color for the first item? as in 10:01 each command for footnote operation is orange but for me its plain white. thank you for the great video! dropped right when i needed it

I think they are enclosed in code tags, so the first item will be something like "- ~s~ - reorder footnotes in _Footnotes_ section...[etc]"

This is set by the theme and/or your .emacs file. I use the Modus theme, which has different colors. Most of my org files are captures, and I also use the org-reverse-datetree package to set a custom date tree. For my set up, the date is at a 4th level heading. I have '(org-level-4 ((t (:background "#f5f5f5")))) in my emacs to give that 4th level heading a gray background, for quick identification. Two of my org files dont have capture datetrees, so the random gray looks odd, but I can overlook it since only 5-10% of my stuff is in those files.

Are you talking about how the [fn:N] is orange? That is defined by the org-footnote face. rguy84 is correct, it would likely be set by the theme you're using. In this video I'm using doom-xcode.

I have an extensive bib file but I also want to keep annotations with each entry. This is annotated bibliography that's commonly used for reference. I want to print the biblio with annotations as a separate doc. How do I do it independent of the org files that reference the biblio entries?
@JakeBox0
@JakeBox0 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately that's a bit out of the scope of this video and I'm not sure how to help, I've never actually done annotations in Bib files... I'd have to see a bit more of your setup to help. I do know you can print the bibliography, see this: orgmode.org/manual/Bibliography-printing.html Maybe these can help? Good luck, sorry I can't be of more help. cachestocaches.com/2020/3/org-mode-annotated-bibliography/ www-math.ucdenver.edu/~billups/courses/guides/annotated_bibliography.html

@@JakeBox0 Thanks very much Jake for those links. For completeness and for others stumbling here, I want to list how exactly your links have been helpful: - to create the annotate keyword in bibtex template for bib entries - to save annotations with the bib file, which for me is a bit more complicated as I have to save multiple annotations that are separate for projects, languages, multiple people entering, etc. But I can create those bib tags as needed. - lastly printing the bib entries themselves as part of normal papers, as part fo a reference doc, and as all intermediate uses such as for editing, git versions, backups, etc. All these of course need to fit in a smooth workflow, which I don't know how that will pan out, but your ideas are a great start. Thanks again.

Let's say i read a pdf, how do i save its metadata in the bib file?
@JakeBox0
@JakeBox0 Жыл бұрын
What type of metadata? Either way there might be a way to automatically extract it to a bib file with Emacs but I’d just type it manually. Or use something like Zotero (but then we’re out of Emacs), I think there’s an Emacs option but I’m not familiar.
