Thanks for the info regarding what works for voles. They've killed a number of new saplings -- fruit trees and landscape pine and cedar during the winter months. Trunk protectors have often worked, but am trying castor oil too. FYI voles don't look anything like moles -- the only thing similar is that they can be a nuisance and are dark colored. Moles are not rodents -- they are highly specialized subterranean insectivores with very distinctive digging paws and a large nose. Voles are rodents and have burrows but are not obligate subterranean species.

Castor Oil, nice!! We have thousands of voles in our area ( hay field farms etc ), first year, they ate everything, including garlic, although, they won’t eat the garlic, but they’ll take it and store it away 😢. We lined our raise beds with hardware cloth, I spray the whole garden with Plantskydd, and our cats each, catch several a day, really, the cats have been the answer, except of course in the winter ; (

That’s wonderful! Thank It is so very frustrating, and the castor oil saved the rest of my plants in the raised bed. I also had success planting my dahlias in pots! I have a separate video on that if you are interested! Happy gardening and thank you for your feedback! 👩‍🌾

Hi! Thank you for the information. I’m going to try castor oil first as I really don’t want to add poisons into the ecosystem (if a hawk/cat/owl/etc would eat a poisoned vole…😢). Can I ask what the purpose of the soap is? I would think it would break down the oil (since that’s what dish soap is supposed to do). But I also know once heard that dish soap is used for other gardening applications too. Again, thank you!!

Hi There and thank you for watching! The dish soap helps emulsify the oil and water, allowing the repellent to be spread evenly. Dish soap is also a eco-friendly way to remedy soft bodies insects. Happy gardening!!

@@downtoearthgardeninganddesign Thank you! My castor oil came in the mail. I'm planning to spray this weekend...unless it's raining. 🙂

Does it make any difference if the raised beds are blocked from the bottom? Do they still get in? And does the oil and soap hurt the plants?

Hi there and welcome to our channel! It is ideal if you can block the raised beds from the bottom. The oil and soap did not affect or hurt the plants in this bed! We do have a video out on planting tulip bulbs in these beds where we lined the bottom with chicken wire and it worked beautifully! We will have a video coming out soon with the results 😊🌷

We have just moved into a home that is across the street from a hay field. We didn't know even existed until this spring. We've trapped more than 50 in the past few weeks! I have 10 raised beds. My son lined them with fine wire on the bottom. So far the wire has kept them out of the beds. I am spraying the same castor oil that she is using in this video.

That big hole is not from voles, it's a RAT!

Hi There! Nope, it’s voles! Rats are more likely to eat dahlia tubers if they are lying about (in storage for example). I have trapped the voles as well. But thanks for your interest and feedback!
