To be honest. I just sat in a 2 hour uni sitting of my management class, my lector did such a bad job explaining. I could have skipped the 2 hours. This video explained it way quicker and more efficiently. Thanks.

Solid video! Organisation and Structure essentially imply the same thing, but on their own are too generic. So instead of using Business, Company etc, which are also generic terms, we have this not very helpful combination of two words. The video states that Organisational Structure is how a business organizes its employees, as in an Organisational Chart, which is a big problem. Just imagine driving around by not paying attention to the road and traffic. Todays businesses are about processes, people and technology doing what matters and should be organised around the idea of Flow.

Hi, Do you know how organisational structures can affect leadership styles?
@TwoTeachers2 жыл бұрын
If you have a flat structure then it is likely that the manager gets involved more and is more hands on. By nature this will mean that they are more democratic. If the organisation has many levels then it is likely that the higher up the managers are the more likely they are to be authoritarian. We have a video on leadership styles that may help you out. Basically though it will depend on the culture of the organisation and the individual. 😀

Is it similar to functional, projectized and matrix organisation?
@TwoTeachers3 жыл бұрын
I believe they are more related to organisation types. So functional is where the business is managed around its functional areas I.e. HR, marketing and finance. Projectized is centred around various projects with a project manager and in this case matrix is a mix of the two. Hope this helps a bit 😀

How about adding some numbers to this- by way of illustration? In the classic hierarchy shown there are 13 "managers" of 48 people (27% by my math). They will be paid higher salaries and perhaps get additional perks (healthcare and pensions). They may also get offices, computers, software, gourmet coffee and a parking place near the door. Adding all this together, the admin/management team my represent 35-45% of the labour costs of the organisation. This is a heavy burden that must be paid for by the productive workers doing more. How is this different for your flat structure? What are the numbers/proportions involved here? The big difference in a small organisation is that often the upper management retain a productive role (like sales for example). This makes them only a partial burden on the productive workers as they are still "adding value". Of particular note is the fact that when managers are also responsible for sales, they communicate directly with the marketplace (clients/users). This saves a good deal of communication internally as the management has their "ear to the ground". The remaining communication will be internal, as the management must be aware of the changing circumstances within and throughout their organisation. Also feedback is important for them as a way to confirm their instructions have carried out properly and completely (or not). It is easier for such a hands-on team to maintain "situational awareness", something that is key to them making good planning decisions (strategy and tactics). The video talks about passing instructions from top to bottom, but fails to take into account the communication from bottom to top. This communication is critical to maintaining situational awareness -particularly in a larger organisation where the management may have little contact with clients/users, little contact with the coal face and little contact across the various separate functions of the organisation. Maintaining situational awareness in these circumstances requires high bandwidth communications; something that is an additional burden on the organisation (like MRPII & SAP). This is a non trivial problem that every organisation must adequately resolve in their organisational model. Matrix management is an example of a "fix" to the inherent problem of scaling hierarchies. -Note, it is easy to know which manager to pay most attention to in a matrix management organisation; it is always the manager of your function. It is they who are permanent and they who will be in control of your reviews, salary and career progress.

Some excellent points there Julian, with knowledge like that you should look at creating some videos yourself!
@julianwilson54683 жыл бұрын
Ha! Yes, I take your point. Its easy to criticise, less easy to make a perfect video. I agree. I wish I knew where to start. I meant my comments as a positive contribution not as a criticism. In my defence I have tried to do something- I've successfully redesigned an organisation to be first self managing and then self leading, then wrote a book about it. But again, KZbin is still something I've not yet set foot in.

Why do we need an organizational structure?
@TwoTeachers2 жыл бұрын
Great question, without one it’s likely that there would be chaos in the workplace as no one would have formal responsibility for decisions or the management of people who work for the business. It’s very important to organise the workforce and enforce lines of communication etc.
