Randy, I’ll offer my two cents. I’m an avid fisherman, but my true athletic passion is golf. I competed in the sport the majority of my young adult life. At 28 and making a statistically average income, I am currently able to compete on minor circuits in golf. However, if I wanted to compete in fishing, it’s a complete non-starter AND IT ISN’T EVEN CLOSE. I’m really disappointed that bass fishing has lost its way in that regard. I will just flat out say it, bass fishing in 2023 is a more elitist sport than golf. By my estimation, the barriers are about 10-15x higher to seriously compete at tournament levels.

Facts. I can play a local golf trail where I live, 10 tournaments with cash payouts for about $750. That wouldn’t even cover gas in the truck and boat to fish 10 tournaments. Let alone needing to buy FF sonar, a dozen rods and reels, tons of tackle, license, registration and insurance for the truck and boat. You get the point. Even local kayak tournaments I could fish I feel like I’d be out-gunned because I don’t have FF sonar or even side imaging on my yak.

Randy just to let you know I have been in contact with my DEC in New York and have expressed my concerns and they seem to agree with the problems with Forward Facing Sonar and the affect it is having on the bass. also they are aware of the problems caused by the conventional weigh in system and I think they are going to be discussing both issues at their next meeting. I also made them aware of your KZbin channel. If everyone contacts their DEC officials we may have some affect, but if we don't nothing is going to change.

What's really sad is that in the near future your no longer going to be able to find the fish we once had the crappie are being depleted from some of the lakes around where we live it's getting harder and harder to find any over 10 - 11 inches long the bass don't get hit that hard because most of them are being released but the rest of the fish species are getting hammered

Nucanoe unlimited. You can get one from the factory with a trolling motor (with spot lock) and the unlimited is big that you can fish with a 2nd angler using the buddy seat they have.

Side-facing sonar has been around for more than 30 years, it shouldn't be an issue. Tournaments should make flashlight batteries and a "Fishnin' Buddy" the maximum allowed tech.

LiveScope is the only electronics I have on my boat. and the only reason I have it is cause my wife bought it for me for Christmas. And I learned to I love it I've learned so much about fishing from it . I've learned how fish react to my bait how fish react to cover and Swift water calm water. I can eliminate spots where I would have fished 30 40 minutes . It doesn't put fish in the boat it can be very frustrating sometimes. I agree with you about not having life scope in tournaments but if we're going to do no livescope let's go back to the very first bassmaster classic and that's all you can have no lock spot no side imaging . just what the guys had in the very first bassmaster classic that's all you can have.

I live on a small 100 acre private lake in Florida. Most of the time the bass fishing was tremendous. Over the past year I’ve seen at least 2 boats with guys using Livescope on a regular basis and the fishing is nowhere near as good as it used to be. It angers me that these guys use Livescope on such a small lake where it really wasn’t that difficult to locate and catch bass not using any sonar whatsoever. I feel like these Livescope guys are really putting too much pressure on the bass and in turn have affected the fishing in a negative way. What a shame🤨.

My wife was watching a little bit of the recent BM Elite on Lay Lake with me. They put up one of those camera shots of forward facing sonar from the particular pro they were showing at that time. I pointed out what she was seeing on the screen. The fish, the lure, etc. Her immediate comment was "That's not fishing" and I said Amen to that!

I personally believe the biggest threat to fishing is not forward facing sonar but instead is the outdated standard of bringing fish in to be weighed. With the increased number of participates in tournaments and the avg mortality rate from tournaments it is depleting the number of bass across our bodies of water and will only get worse over time. I seriously think all tournaments circuits need to transition to the MLF standard of catch, weigh, immediately release. Livescope or not if there are no fish it doesn't matter.

Perhaps set a tournament up almost like a video game career would start, have every angler start off with a bare bones boat with nothing on it but a motor and live well and limited the tackle they start with and depending on where you finish at each tournament you’re awarded points that can be redeemed for upgrades to your gear and boat. This way it gives company’s ways to market new products while also keeping everyone on the same playing field to start with and the better you perform the more upgrades you can unlock and fans can be interactive on which gear and upgrades the angler should get.

I want it banned period. Not just in competitions. To me it ranks right up there with spotlighting and baiting deer, and I do use the technology so there isn’t a question about that. It’s not just what it has done to bass tournaments. I know I can wipe out entire schools of crappie with it. Either extreme limits will have to be implemented or there won’t be any of those fish left when prices come down some and enough people can afford it. It’s still out of the price range of the majority of casual anglers right now.

I think the tournament organizers need to put some thought into what the “fishing” is going to be like at each event and set the rules to reflect that. This goes for forward facing sonar and biggest 5 vs every fish counts. If they are fishing a lake at a time of the year where the fish are still off shore but there are some hogs out there they should utilize forward facing sonar and go biggest 5. If they are fishing a tournament where the fish are up shallow then eliminate FF sonar and then determine what the bite should be like. If it’s known to be a tough bite on said water at that time of year then go with every fish counts and find out which anglers have the skills to find em when it’s tough like that, if everyone will be catching a limit and culling up throughout the day make it best 5. Not every tournament has to be the same format. Even in golf on the PGA tour, most tournaments are stroke play but they have one that’s stableford, one that’s match play, and even one that’s a team event. Not to mention the Ryder Cup.

I witnessed possibly a teenage two day tournament last weekend out of Ditto Landing in Huntsville Alabama on the river after hours of the bass being in the livewell then after the weigh in some of them were flipping them bass back in the water and were 6 feet above the surface of the water while doing it. No telling how many of them bass died in that 2 day tournament. Pissed me off seeing it!

I went w a crappie guide on toledo bend last yr. It was during summer. He told us about how they had a tournament a few days before, in 100+ heat, and that there was dozens of dead 2+ lbers dead on the bank. And its cause they caught them deep w ffs, livewelled em and released.

Oneida lake 3 yrs ago if you had 16 pds u had a chance last yr at the open I believe there was roughly 80 bags over 16 pds and same with champlain if u had 16 5 yrs ago u were in top 20 now theres a 100 bags over 16, so it obviously is helping alot of anglers dont be mistaken the only reason isn't in the south is cause your lakes are terrible fisheries and the population isnt there any more plain and simple

That’s an extremely narrow perspective. I fish both of those lakes and Oneida has had an exploding gobie population that has steadily increased weights. Champlain is an extremely heslthy fishery that also has a had an invasive alewife population that has made the fish bigger. There are a lot of factors that contribute to an increase in weights. Cayuga/gobies, Ontario/gobies.

Part of fishing is the barrier between the fisherman and the fish. Sonar blurrs that line and FFS blows it away. Every professional sport has equipment regulations. Professional bass fishing could drive a ton of innovation that would makenthe sport more accessable. Make boats 17-19 ft. Limit horsepower to 150 and set a max fuel capacity. Limit boat weights. This would force boat manufacturers to develop lighter boats, more efficient motors, better hull designs etc. Stop the arms race and drive innovation in the middle where more people will benefit 5-7 years down the road.

I look at it like this. If you want to use it, use it. If you don't want to, then don't, but don't try to infringe on someone else's right to do so. I've use it ever since it came out. Yes you can see the fish, but you still have to fish for and catch them before you can put them in the boat. It doesn't put them in the boat for you. But if you want to ban ffs, then ban talons, power poles, spot lock, HB 360, and go back to the no larger than a 150hp boat motor. When I started fishing tournaments you couldn't have more than a 150hp boat motor. I can see both sides, but also when you go buy a new car it has more crap on it to help you drive than the one from 1940. They practically can drive themselves in cruise mode, but I don't hear to many of you complaining about that and it's the same crap. So either go all the way back to the beginning and make everyone fish with the same fishing lures, rods and reels, and same boat so it is fair and nobody can fish their home lakes either or just deal with it and try to get better at fishing. To much winning crap for me over ffs. I don't have all the fancy stuff but I fish and do my best and don't complain about things. I win several tournaments and they're other guys that win without it and some with it. If you can afford it use it, if you can't then just do your best like the rest of us.

At some point something is going to have to give. I own a boat and have FFS on it, but do not use it to chase fish in open water. If I use it at all it's to see if bait are around to attract fish on an area I want to fish. This year I have fished three tournaments as a co-angler on two different trails and gotten paired with FFS fishermen twice. There is nothing like a long day on the back of a boat watching a guy watching a screen trolling around like he's drunk chasing and looking for fish to throw at. I'm convinced it's partly to blame for the Bass Opens and BFL light co-angler registrations. People try to sell it as look at all the cool stuff you're learning which is not a damn thing!

I’m with you Randy. I don’t have a problem with people using it for personal use but guides are using it for profit as well as the tournament anglers. There will be a reckoning mark my words and I am going to be specific watch O.H. Ivy here in Texas. Even the Texas Parks and Wildlife are finding a lot of fish over 10 lbs dead because they were targeted in 30-40 ft depths with F.F. Sonar. The population of bass can’t take a hit like this without consequences. For the last 4 months the bass have been beaten up. Just check out the lake reports. Just a word of warning if will make a disastrous difference.

I stood on the bow of the boat, looking at how fish reacted to baits using FFS. It's not hard to see how it can be addictive. But you still have to make them eat. That's not a defense of the technology. But what concerns me is the sheer massive numbers of Crappie and Bluegill being harvested. Individual states are going to have to adjust the daily limit on these species. Otherwise, our fisheries are going to be in trouble sooner rather than later.

My personal thoughts are if forward facing sonar is banned then bed fishing should be banned as well. Along with down and side scan sonar. They are all close to the same thing except bed fishing can have a MUCH greater impact on fish reproduction. The other thing is professional tournament fishing has ALWAYS been about money so to me singling out one item makes no sense. I don't fish tournaments any longer I'm a disabled vet and just can't do what it takes. I'm also not against stopping the FFS but just would say it should be fair across the board

I’m not “pro” livescope…but what I will say is it isn’t going anywhere in the big leagues. Embrace technology or don’t. Fish the small tourneys that ban it. But BASS/MLF are trying to get new people which means customers and at the end of the day. It’s a business. Curious question to all the people that are against tech. I like the mysteries of fishing , when I do have a good day on the water, it’s much more satisfying , and memorable. I wouldn’t watch football if I knew every play call before it happened, I don’t watch bass fishing on tv anymore , those guys just playing a video game. Wasn’t high performance bass boats with 300 hp motors, all types of sonar, down imaging, side scan, 360, braided lines, pedal/remote control trolling motors, spot lock, hydrowave 😂, color selector 😂, numerous fish attractants, and power poles all a technological advantage over the years. If it’s available to all, then it’s not an unfair advantage. If enough anglers are against using all the technology, start a new tournament series that only allows Jon boats, with 9.9hp, the old “green box”, and the old style black line then we’ll see who the real true anglers are. But just remember, without all the sponsor money, don’t expect much of a payout.

I only fish with zebco 33's and rooster tails now. My DC reels and hinkle shad made catching giants way too easy. They should ban big swimbaits, and reels that allow you to cast more than 40'. It's really taking away from the sport.

Lord....it's technology everyone....get used to it. It's not going away. Just adapt. With that being said....if you can afford it go for it....but I don't have one because i don't want to fork out the money. You can still compete without it....look at John Cox. It's not an excuse to not compete. But i will agree with Randy here......it is all about the money and it's not going anywhere in the professional ranks.

MLF screwed everyone going to cayuga a week before season. Now Nys Is passing a law that our catch and release season is only for Nys residents which means if you dont live here you csnt come here and fish for bass during the CNR season. Good riddens Mlf you arent destroying our lakes

GPS Lake Contour mapping is a FAR FAR more powerful tool than FFS, side imaging, or any other fishing technology. Randy, if you are against technology in fishing, why are you not speaking out against GPS mapping, it’s far more powerful technology than FFS?

I watch all your videos including the anti forward facing sonar videos. Basically what I get from the anti FF sonar videos is opinions. I have yet to see any factual evidence based on collected data that proves that FF sonar is bad for the sport. I still tournament fish occasionally and I have FF sonar. If I can’t fish a tournament because FF sonar is not allowed , that’s fine with me , no big deal. I’ll just jump in one that does allow FF sonar. Where I live, there is a very large group of guys that fish a tournament circuit that does not allow a boat with more than 115 hp engine. No body that I know really seems to care about that. And I don’t really think that the guys that have FF sonar really care if they are banned. There are a ton of tournaments available to fish.

WRT tournaments, ban it or not, I could care less since I have no interest in tournaments. Unchecked growth in the events themselves is the real issue not FFS. Just don’t tell me what I can and can not use recreationally.

Randy has brought up too many tournament being scheduled on his home lake before and how it impacts the fishery. As far as FFS, I think if the elite pros in the big circuits want to use them, it is an even playing field because all of them have it, but smaller circuits for weekend working people it should not be allowed. The Opens and tournaments of that caliber already cost a lot to fish and if someone can afford travel and entries they can afford new technology but below that it puts a lot of people out of contention because of cost. Just my .02🤷🏻‍♂️

Your spot on. Today we live in a society where expect everything now now now. Apps on smartphones/tablets and the growth of tech in general has created this. Having everything at our finger tips at any given time and the expectation of that is the problem. Gone are the days of hard work, practice, and TAKING THE TIME TO LEARN HOW TO DO SOMETHING WELL. My hunch is that its gen z peeps that are so embracing of this technology. We need to remember that we are now a society where we have fast food delivered to us. It's no surprise that this mentality is bleeding into everything we do.
