I do 4 binders, one for each grandparent because if I want to take a certain binder to a library or building it’s easier. I use clear sheet to protect all my documents and tabs for each generation. I also have color-coded my grandparents.

Sounds like you've found a system that works for you!

A lot of non-answers. It’d be nice to hear pros and cons before making fundamental decisions.

I just inherited my mother's collection. She had a large family and researched several family lines. She was also a photographer, and carried a camera constantly. I imagine I have 5, 000 photos to sort through! Then, there are the memorabilia, like funeral cards, even report cards from tech schools! This is how I am currently handling it. I have a 3 or 4 inch 3-ring binder for one line, say, my maternal grandparents. I punched 3 holes in large manila envelopes, 1 for my grandparents and 9 for their children. This is where I put those memorabilia! Between the manila envelopes I inserted a clear sheet protector for EACH of the children's CHILDREN. So...this gets me started. Now when I go through boxes and baskets of photos and odds and ends, instead of setting it off in another box (which will need sorted through again later!), now they can go in the correct envelope or protector. As to the photos, I will sort through and scan the important ones. Probably making an album using Shutterfly. I will KEEP the really professional photos in that binder I mentioned and hope to give away any of the ones I don't need to keep or want to store. Or...we can keep them for some art projects with the kids. My goal, though, is to do away with those large old clumsy photo albums that have worn down. Shutterfly books are thin. We can also add Our Story to accompany the photos. I also bought a safe to keep the vital genealogy in. Hope this helps or inspires you with a new idea. Would love to hear other ideas!

Did you think about "doing away with those large old clumsy photo albums" by donating them to the historical society of the state/county/town where the photos were taken? I hope so.

I love the tip shared when transitioning from paper to paperless to consider what you're going to do from this point forward and work that way before tackling the papers in house. Great tip!

Yes, that eases my mind as I begin on MY journey of Family Genealogist.
