Thank you so much for everything you shared, it has very helpful on our starting journey. Would you mind to share which handwriting curriculum did you use for 1st grade and why not bju? I’m trying to understand “why cursive” and evaluate if we are going with it. Please.

I started my kids on cursive and then taught print second for several reasons. A few being: less chance of mixing up print letters (p, q, b and d), all cursive letters start on the baseline where print start in many different places on the dotted lines which can cause confusion, and cursive makes it easier to space words properly as cursive words are connected and then a space before next work while print words can sometimes run into each other with younger children. If you are going with print first and then cursive then BJU handwriting is a great option. I used Cursive First to teach cursive as it went along with the spelling curriculum I was using (Spell to Write and Read).

Have you decided yet if you’ll continue using the Parent / Teacher Guides in paper form (what you had set up in the binders) or if you’ll be having your children do online testing next year instead? This is our first year using DLO for one of my children. You have been a HUGE INSPIRATION toward me making this decision. We are so EXCITED!!! Thank you for all your very informative tutorials!!!😊

Thank you for this and all your helpful videos! We, too, are migrating over to BJU press and are excited by the potential for our middle schooler. I heard you mention a future video about an in-depth comparison between the DVD and online versions. I would love to see that! I know that personally I searched high and low for such a video and was unable to find one. Rather, I pieced together a variety of blogs and videos to determine the main differences but nothing was cohesive. I really steer away from putting my child online and like the idea of a "digital hybrid" where he can take paper tests and quizzes yet have digital videos is appealing yet we have unreliable internet at times. I am curious to see what you uncover in your comparison. We chose online for now to see how we like a certain amount of automation and whether I feel confident with the portal options and internet filtering. Since I am a web and media designer--a technologist of sorts--I am painfully aware of the easy pitfalls presented for innocent children online. I'll be tuning in more and more to your wonderful videos--thanks!

Can you make a video or post on how you keep up with the Mom's Minutes and Teacher's tips videos before each of the DLO lessons? Do you find it challenging to keep up with it?

That's easy. I don't watch the Mom's Minutes or Teacher tips. ;) My priority was getting all the papers graded each day and by the time I did that I didn't have the time or energy to watch the Mom's Minutes. I try to walk by each child when they are working on a lesson so I can get a general idea of what they are learning. If a child is getting confused or seems to be missing a lot of problems on the worksheets then I usually watch the lessons with them and pause the program every now and then to explain a concept. It seems to be working fine without me watching the tips. Perhaps that will change as the year goes on but for now I just skip them. ;)

We are in the beginning stages of our DLO year (first timers, too) and I think I will watch a few more of the Mom's Minutes/Teacher's Tips and see if I really need to continue to watch them meticulously or not. It's a good reminder about how we should use the curricula as a tool and not let it be our master. Thank you!!!

How do you organize your teacher guides from BJU Press?

I only have 3 teacher guides/subjects, so I put them all in one binder for me. The kids get their own binder with their handouts (none of them have answers in their handouts, so it works well). One of my children gets their own copy of the video lesson guide so they visually see what work will need to be done at a glance instead of looking it up all online.

Every teacher binder was different because some subjects/grades came with more in the packet than others. I bought several binders in several different sizes, used the ones I needed and then planned on returning the rest (but never got around to it. ha! I just saved them for the next year).

Are the parent guides the same info as the student guides or video lesson guide? Or is it an answer key? Does the parent guide replace a teachers edition? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to understand what's in the parent guide part. Thanks for all your BJU videos!

The parent guide has the answer keys and other information for the parent. If you choose the online option then the parent guide information is online.
