I love hearing about your home schooling journey, and I admire the way you teach Easton and Huddy. You do a amazing job. Have a wonderful day 💞

Just a little affirmation~I'm a retired elementary school teacher, first, second, and fifth, in Texas. I think your approach is very sound. (It's very similar to what I did with my students.) There are core subjects that really should be taught and reinforced daily, and others that can be done more intermittently. I alternated science and social studies, one each day, and always tried to have something hands on or art related with those subjects to keep it fun and interesting, Particularly with younger children. And you have the advantage of tailoring it to your children. Keep up the good work~you're a great teacher!

@@ritadyer9295 Oh, not me! (I:ve had previously homeschooled students enrolled in my classroom before who were woefully behind,...but) If the parent/teacher is conscientious and really values education it is wonderful! My oldest son and his wife homeschooled their children. I often got to substitute for them for a week or so. I loved it!

@@ritadyer9295 Keep trying, and rely on your teacher's books and manuals. I did a little homeschooling with my grandkids, and wish I'd been brave enough to try it with my own boys. (Anybody see anything strange about a teacher feeling better about teaching a classroom full of students than teaching her own three? In my defense, I had one son who was leaps ahead of me always!) Just google anything you need help or ideas for. Teachers Pay Teachers is a good resource, and lots of items are free, or very low cost. There are probably helpful things about any subject you need to teach. Or~ do you have a teacher friend who could give you some hints? You'll do fine! The hardest thing for me would be staying on schedule every day, I think.

I love curriculum videos. Christian Light Education is another program that is set up like ACE in terms of small workbooks. My son who is in 8th grade has used CLE for math, reading, and lang. arts since first grade. It is a fantastic curriculum and I highly recommend it if you like that format! I'm glad you spoke about making the curriculum work for you because of the freedom we have as homeschoolers. It is such an important thing to remember and makes homeschooling so much more enjoyable!

CLE is excellent. I have experience with ACE and CLE and CLE is more solid academically, and has great teacher support in the manuals and via phone.

Where is your plaid shirt from? Super cute. We love bju press. I hear a lot that it is so much BUT I think it is best used as a jumping off point. It has a lot of activities, you have to pick and choose which works best for your kids learning style!

I believe it came from a thrift store. :) And yes you are exactly right! You have to make any curriculum work for you, not you working for it. 💯

@@OurSmallTownLife thank you I have been homeschooling since 2020 and haven't yet found a good flow. I'm gonna be having two kids homeschool age this time and I'm trying to decide on BJU press parent lead or online for grades 3 and 1. Is there a placement test? I really like what I'm seeing about BJU but I'm nervous with having two kids to teach and a 3 year old and a 8 months old

You ever use Abeka? I’m regretting buying Abeka 5th grade, looking at your videos and the beauty of the BJU books. I don’t think Abeka has updated their 5th grade curriculum in over 5 years (at least).
@OurSmallTownLife Жыл бұрын
I haven't. My sister used Abeka with her girls and it wasn't her favorite so I've never tried it.

what are your thoughts on starting homeschooling your child at 2 years old do you think they are too young to start the homeschooling journey or are they perfect age?
@OurSmallTownLife10 ай бұрын
I think it depends on the child. We typically start with a very gentle preschool curriculum at 3 or 4 and then kindergarten at 5 or 6.

Do you feel BJU teaches a child to read well? I am a busy homeschooling mom of six kids and am looking for a simple non overwhelming but fun and effective way to teach my child to read. Curious about the phonics and English. Do they offer a placement test to know do this is the right level for my child?
@OurSmallTownLife28 күн бұрын
We absolutely love BJU Phonics and English. We didn't do the online course we did parent led, and it was a little time intensive if you do all the manipulatives and such. We got in a groove of what tools we wanted to use and perhaps if you did online it would do some of that for you. We will continue to use it even if it takes a little extra time because it works and works well. As a mom of 5 myself, I know how valuable our time is.
@OurSmallTownLife28 күн бұрын
I don't know about a placement test. I think what they suggest is looking through the contents and topics covered to see if it meets where your child is.

I looked online at this curriculum and I’m definitely considering it, it’s just so expensive 1k$ 🤯 do you think I need the videos or could I just wing it with books only
@OurSmallTownLife5 ай бұрын
They have teacher's books you can get and that is cheaper than the videos. We do a mixture.
@maggiechaconas24910 ай бұрын
How do you not have to put a grade on it? In wv we have to take standardized test based on their "grade level" and my child is behind. (Trying to get her tested for learning disabilities but its been a bunch of hoops) i need help :(
@OurSmallTownLife10 ай бұрын
Alabama has none of those regulations and no required testing. We have the freedom to teach our children in a way that we see best and it's truly a beautiful thing. The way it should be for everyone in my opinion. Keep advocating for your child. No one knows what's best for them like you do. No school system, no standardized test, no one knows them and their needs better than you! ❤️

Just curious. I have a daughter on the spectrum she’s on like 2nd grade math, reading writing but 3rd grade history science. Can I mix it like that? I’m really wanting a curriculum that has online , textbook and teaching options but need it affordable please say this is that lol
@OurSmallTownLife9 ай бұрын
You can definitely mix and match grade levels, we do. Online courses do cost extra. The curriculum can be a bit of an investment if you use it across all subjects. It's on the higher end of prices.

Do y'all have a start date and end date like regular school. I admire anyone who can homeschool. Keep up the good work. I love your video's and family. I love that y'all have named your chickens. We have one named henny penny.

Sometimes we formal test, but most of the time it is by observece, especially at this age. We usually stick to the same schedule as the public school system because that is what works for us. We are not a part of a co-op, but we are a part of a group that goes on field trips together. Thank you for commenting!❤️
