Organizing Myths

Most of the organizing myths that I am looking at represent conventional organizing wisdom. If that wisdom work for you, great. However, I find that it doesn't work for the clients I've worked with over the past 18 years. I explain why it doesn't work and then offer alternatives. Here are the links that are referenced.

Agree with the focus shift from sentimental items to other ones when decluttering. This way you train your decluttering muscle, have success and might find decluttering sentimental items easier later in the process. If having a reasonable amount of "not sure" items, put them in a bin and out of sight. You might be wiser about them in your next decluttering round.

Definitely! Your brain will be in “keepsake mode” and you will have a clearer scorecard on the quantity and sub categories.

Thank you - going to give this a try. Recognize the transition places in my home that actually work for me. Once incoming mail becomes a pile it is intimidating, daunting, and overwhelming. Will set a reminder to get my mail and sort it each day until it becomes a habit, then move to the next stage. One bite - clean surface - conquer paper.

That’s it! The more these daunting projects become small, manageable tasks the less of a barrier there will be in your mind, so you’ll be more likely to get them done consistently.

I have lots of things I use less than once a year, for example a sewing machine, binoculars, dancing shoes, sleds (no snow every year), but it would be very stupid to throw these things out. Thank you for your videos!
