the catalog saves all the changes done to you photos, so yes, it is asvisable to back it up, and yes, i will work, every time you change computers save your pictures, and save your catalog file, you can then import your photos into lightroom and open the catalog, everything will be just like always.

I wish there was a way to jump to the specific area I need. For example the Importing section was very overdone, laborious. But the price was right of course. This is good stuff, the pace is good for learning too. So, Thanks Tim.

thanks for the video... I have 1 question, for the catalogue, shall we backup a copy in-case if anything happened to the computer? if we re-install the LR and just copy the backup copy of the catalogue to the destinated location, will it still work? pls advise. thanks.

I wanted to know that if I have already imported photos into Lightroom and then reorganised them into different external hard drives, how do I bring them into the develop module , edit and resave them again possibly and should i save them in the same hdds ? Thanks,

Wherever your files are downloaded LR gives you the option to import into Library and move the files from their original location- like the memory card, for instance- and move your files to a selected drive. It will give you the option to move them to any drive (internal or a connected external). If you import into LR and tell it to move a file from camera to HD "A', then go back to "Develop" file and have HD "B" connected to your computer and not HD "A", LR will tell you "File Not Found". If you click on "?" on the thumbnail, LR will ask you if you want it to find original file, and in most cases, it wail tell you where you last "moved" it to

Could you please tell me how to re-organise the pictures that I had earlier in my library and were not organised when I installed the lightroom a year or so back - that is 15000 odd pictures.
@BandH
@BandH 9 жыл бұрын
You can put all the images in a catalog, and then create different folders within the catalog for which ever subjects you prefer. You can also filter images based on date or other settings to make it easier to differentiate between images. |Heather S|

I am still watching this video with regard to organization and I have a question. I have iPhoto, so my photos go there. I also put them on a storage disk, so, in affect, I have duplicate copies. I do delete a LOT, because I am new to this and screw up a lot. Now, figuring some of this out on my own, I imported my photographs onto Lightroom from a storage disk. I did not want all these photos in Lightroom, so I assume I am safe to delete them all and put only the ones I want to keep on Lightroom. Thanks for your response ahead of time.

Nancy King Just remember, when you Press the Backspace key (Windows) or Delete key (Mac OS), or Choose Photo > Delete Photo(s), you are only removing the selected photo(s) from the collection, not from the catalog, and no Confirm dialog box appears. To remove a photo from a collection as well as from the catalog, select the photo and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Delete (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift+Delete (Mac OS). In the Confirm dialog box, click one of the following: Remove: Removes photos from the catalog but doesn?t send them to the Recycle Bin (Windows) or Trash (Mac OS). Delete From Disk: Removes photos from the catalog and sends them to the Recycle Bin (Windows) or Trash (Mac OS). Steven C askbh@bandh.com

How do i reordering out of sequence photos in lightroom as im using 2 cameras for my work
@BandH
@BandH 9 жыл бұрын
In order to reorder images in the Library, view them in Grid view and then drag (in the thumbnail) and drop in order to re position. This creates what's called a Custom Sort order. However, Custom Sort orders depend on folder hierarchy. If a folder contains subfolders, a custom sort order is not possible unless the option to Include Items from Subfolders is disabled. If you want to reorder images that have subfolders (without moving them from their original folders), then select all of the images and create a Collection (not a Smart Collection Custom Sort orders are not available for Smart Collections) and then reorder them in the collection. askbh@bandh.com

Ultimately, I would like o know how do you create a dynamic backup of your lightroom library? I.e. I want to import my raw files as dng on my computer and build smart preview, then send the original dng files to an external hdd but in a way that let's me work on smart previews on my laptop and get the metadata synced with the dng files, and idealy, if I delete a smart preview from my lightroom library, it deletes the dng file from all locations. How do you that? I tried exporting my dng files via lightroom to an eHDD but that's no good, I tried exporting as a catalog, doesn't update the metadata like I would want it to
@BandH
@BandH 10 жыл бұрын
The Lightroom catalog is SQLite database which is single user only. When LR is open a .lock file is created. Because of this, you are not able to deletes the dng file from all locations at the same time.

Thanks. Very thorough. I just wish I could just have the Develop module as a standalone and then use photoshop. I've been using photoshop for years and have managed to keep and file all of my photos without losing any. I can find them and edit them. They are archives. Why would I want to import thousands of images in to lightroom? The Develop module is great but the essence of this presentation is the lightroom is constraining and inflexible. You HAVE to use lightroom. It's like iTunes. That's the same. I don't constantly travel around the world and if I go away for business or pleasure I can manage for a few days without having access to thousands of archived photos. I've been trying to get to grips with lightroom and it's just too complicated. You know what? I want to go out, take photos, come home and look at them and do some editing. However this was a very useful and well presented video. Thanks for taking the time to make it because it has helped me understand why everything seemed so complicated.

I love PS too, but PS won't help you organize your images. And there is SO much more that LR can do for you!! Take some time to work with Lightroom and you'll see that it is awesome! You can't compare PS with LR. Apples and oranges. LR is a whole different world! Try it and see...

B&H... Tim said that once you commit to Lightroom, you need to FULLY commit to Lightroom ... what if I delete or move a photo outside of Lightoom?.... How will that affect the photo once I am back in Lightroom?
@BandH
@BandH 8 жыл бұрын
+Tom Biondi If you are working within Lightroom and you delete an image a you’ll see a pop up that asks if you are deleting the image from just your catalog, or if you want to delete the image permanently from the drive it is currently on. Deleting from the catalog will still leave your file in the folder it currently resides while deleting from the drive will put the file into the recycling bin. If you move a file to a different folder location along the navigation bar in the Library Module, that change will be reflected in your computers file system as Lightroom is just reflecting the file system you have your the computer. If a file is moved or deleted outside of Lightroom, when you enter Lightroom again, you will see a ? in the corner of the thumbnail image in the Library Model indicated that there has been a change to the source file. You can then either delete the thumbnail, or click on the ? to reconnect the file and let Lightroom know the new location that you had moved it to. *Andrea

Currently using a 30 day trial version........so far not so good very slow and simply freezes whenever It finally does get going. Do Adobe deliberately partially disable the trial versions so as to make you think if you buy it you will get one that works 100% ?
@BandH
@BandH 9 жыл бұрын
Adobe does not disable the trial downloads in anyway. Trials are just as functional as the paid version, except they are limited to 30 days of use. My hunch about your issue is that your computer is not sufficient, either in its system RAM or possibly using a less optimal operating system with the Adobe program. I would recommend checking out the system requirements for the software and compare against what your computer currently operates on. You may need to update that. Many photo editing programs require a lot of available RAM as they are graphic intense so it takes more to run them adequately. If that?s not the issue I?d recommend contacting Adobe, they would be able to help you properly troubleshoot the matter. - Yossi
