Great tips! Another good use for clothes pins is labeling container garden plants. I write the name in sharpie on the clothes pin and clip it to the edge of the pot. When I need to transplant I simply move it to the new pot with the plant. Beats trying to use tape or writing on the pot and they are cheaper and more readily available than garden picks or popsicle sticks.

thelmarrie Brilliant! My clothespin bag is hung near the door leading to the spot where I container garden, and I would walk right past it to get my garden sticks. (DUH.)

Our tip for clean/dirty dishes is that as soon as we dump the clean dishes we fill up the soap. So if there is soap the dishes are dirty.

In post WW II America, my mother hung out our clothes on a Monday morning (providing it wasn't raining. When it rained our laundry was hung in the basement. We had both push and pinch clothes pins. The pinch clothes pins were for the laundry to be hung out to dry (more secure in the brisk breezes than push clothes pins). The push clothes pins were set out on a blanket with an very clean glass milk bottle (milk was delivered in those days, along with other dairy products) and the current baby of the family. The baby would spend the early morning putting the push clothes pins into the milk bottle and then empying it out, over and over. That kept baby occupied for as long as it took my mother to hang out the wash (with the help of the older girls). I loved the smell of the fresh laundry when it was brought in to be hung up, folded and put away, or "sprinkled" (an old and cleaned catsup bottle with a cork bottomed sprinker head. Laundry to be ironed was "sprinkled), rolled up in a garment bag and stored in the lowest shelf of the refrigerator to be ironed come Tuesday morning. By the way, if the wash wasn't on the line by 7 AM, the neighbors who shared our telephone party line would be calling up to ask who was sick in the house and what could they do to help out?

Easy to do child's party game with that same idea... kids take turns kneeling on a chair facing backwards, and see who can drop the most out 10 clothes pins into the bottle or jar. Takes a little skill, fun to do and fun to cheer each other on... it's also inexpensive, and can be used over and over. We played this with my cousins at practically every birthday~ and there were 18 of us!

I love noodles ... in of the generation who grew up with party lines. The kids called them gossip lines because my grandmother and her buddies used to get in the line every morning and chat to catch up un the neighborhood gossip....whose sick, who needed a meal delivered, who was out of town so they coup water plants and keep an eye on the house....it was a different time!

I use clothes pins to close bags too. I've used binder clips as well because you can toss them in the dishwasher (silverware bins) if they get dirty. i use clothespins on the edge of my giant coffee cups to hold tea bags from falling in while it steeps - super handy! great video :)

One thing I do is I buy ponytail holders at the Dollar Tree store (I think you get like 100 per bag??..) and after I open a roll of wrapping paper I take the ponytail holder and I put it on the roll and it keeps the wrapping paper from moving and securely in place. I use to use free rubrberbands, but they ripped the paper. They even sell the rubberbands in different cute colors at the $ store if you wanna get real fancy & color coordinate=)

We use empty paper towel tubes, slit up the side and it simply wraps over the gift wrap roll. Totally free.
@grinning_owl
@grinning_owl 7 жыл бұрын
I tie a piece of narrow gift wrap ribbon around the tube. When I want to get fancy, I use a color that matches the paper. Pony tail holders and paper towel tubes save time when you are using the rolls often. The ribbon works great for long-term storage. That way, you can use the pony tail holders for your hair during the year, if necessary.

Love it! Always enjoy seeing different ways a single item can be used. Hubby has a rule: don’t buy it until it has at least 3 purposes/uses. Eg: we don’t own a rice cooker but we do have a slow cooker. ☺️

We always lose clothespins but something that we keep in the 'junk drawer' in our kitchen or we always have rubber bands so we just fold down the bag a couple of times and wrap a rubber band around it, it doesn't crush them and it's easy to do. BTW I love the 'crap basket' idea, that is genius! :) Another weird tip is to use pop tabs to double hang, just slip a pop tab on the top hanger (the larger hole) and set it down to the neck of the hanger with the smaller hole exposed and hang another hanger on that bottom hole, so you can coordinate outfits and double your closet space! :) (Just recently found that one out and was blown away by its simple genius lol!) Thanks for sharing your tips! :)

GRAND idea, Dorothy. I organize "vertically" in all my closets for more closet space (raise the rods), and was just about to order more Joy Mangano velcro "over the hanger" hooks (which are super too, btw). This is cheaper, however, and keeps those uglies out of the landfill! Thanks.

We have used clothes pins for EVERYTHING, for generations too! Also if you want to add some fun to your salts, you can put it in a snaplock bag with a couple of drops of food coloring and essential oils shake it up, put it back in the container and let it air dry over night, then pop your brushes back in to your brightly colored and scented salts. :)

my family has also been using that magnet-on-washing machine, like, forever! when me and my two brothers were kids, it was our job to load and unload the dishwasher. we had three letters there: L, T & H, from our first names (Zinetha is not my real name, my name is Laura), always one at the top, the one whose turn is was then, and two at the bottom. the person on the top would unload the clean dishes, load the dirty dishes and then change the position of the letters for the next person. when a person used dishes, they put them straight away to the dish washer. so the unloading+loading had to happen quite much right away, so dirty dishes wouldn't pile up. then me and one of my brothers moved from the house to study, and my parents changed the system, now it's kinda like yours, one letter for dirty, one for clean. we're Finnish, so the words aren't dirty and clean, they're the Finnish equivalents, L for likainen and P for puhdas. :) the crap basket is a great idea! though i live in a one-bedroom apartment, it will be a lot easier to get stuff in right rooms with a basket, where i throw everything and then go thought the apartment one room at a time in the evening.

I really like these "this is what works for me" videos. We don't use clothes pins in our home, but we do use office supplies for all kinds of things. In particular, binder clips and bulldog clips (my personal favorite), for closing bags, hanging calendars. I even have binder clips holding all our phone chargers. They keep the ends of the charger from falling off the shelf and make it easy to just grab and plug in--very much like the Command hook on your table.

Yes!and you can get a package of different size binder clips at DT for a buck! I use them for everything....corralling headphone cords, keeping power cords handy but out of the way in the kitchen, organizing coupons for a specific store, and store receipts by store in my purse. The mini ones hold a lot and if you put the clip on the side, you can flip the receipts and still have them all together! On,y remove the ones you need. They work great to use in a box with not side opening. Just paint the clip and add it to the top edge and tie you label to the clip.

It took me a few attempts to see the full CS Lewis quote on your wall. I will be using it! Clothes pins...I'm 72 & up until recently I hung out most of my clothes. It wasn't until the decorations at a baby shower using the clothes line & pins did I think of another reason for them. And now I am the proud owner of several sizes of spring clothes pins and even use them for gifts to be used for house/apartment/freshman college kids warming gifts. The plastic ones usually fall apart while guarding a closed bag of some tidbit. Thanks for your ideas. Will be using Epsom salt idea (who doesn't have some especially at my age) and the Safety First power strip. Remain Blessed

We have always used clothespins to close chip bags, pasta, rice, etc. My friends use to think my family was so weird, like totally, because every time they came over for 'movie night' (on the VCR, of course) all of our snack type foods had clothespins on them...they were use to those big, plastic clips that said CHIP CLIP on them...When my son was little, we use to paint & embellish them for gifts for his Nana, Grandma, babysitters & daycare workers. Some we would put magnets on the back and you could use them to clip artwork, recipes, shopping list & calendars to the fridge : ) Carson is just too, too cute! And so well behaved...you're such a great Mommy to him!

I just use a jar like a small, straight up, olive jar and chalk paint it to match decor. Then things stay straight up and my cats don’t spill whatever is in the jar. I hat having to clean up a spill before I can get dressed in the AM. Lol. With small straight up jars I can organize the jars....make up brushes, tooth brushes and tooth past, on a small lipped tray. I have glass shelves where they all go.

I've watched a couple of your organizing videos & enjoy them very much. One thing though: you have got to slowwww down on the talking speed. You're imparting important information but the delivery is so fast that it's overwhelming. I say this as an east coast native and fast talker myself, but even I don't talk that fast. Practice slowing yourself down and your videos will be even that much better!

Diane Kiko in that case why not either put a strip of velcro on side of headboard or side table or another way of creating handy storage is to reuse an old pillowcase which with very long little alteration can even be subdivided with one end tucked under the mattress and the hanging ready to store and keep to hand all those essential "small items" that can easily get mislaid !:)

When I used the Epsom salt, it scratched up my brushes. And if it spills, I do recommend cleaning it. Even though it's natural, it's still extremely poisonous. You child can eat it. So can your dog, so u don't reccomend using Epsom salt.

I ALSO USED IT FOR MY BRUSHES AND AS SOON AS IT GETS WARM OUT, THE SALT STICKS TOGETHER FROM ANY MOISTURE AND TURNS INTO A BIG BALL OF ROCK WITH YOUR BRUSHES IN IT !! JUST A NOTE FOR U GUYS IF U HAVE NICE, EXPENSIVE BRUSHES OR U DON'T WANT TO CLEAN UP THE BIGGEST MESS EVER !! I HAD SALT EVERYWHERE TRYING TO GET MY BRUSHES OUT ! THX BYE

Does ANYONE know of anything you can do with wire hangers? My husband gets 10 a week, and the thrift store's don't want them, they want allow us to put them in the trash and I have 100's of them, Just need an idea or a few dozen idea's on what I can do with them, they drive me bananas, I do slip them in on my donation's from time to time, just a couple of dozen at a time, it looks like they'd want any type of hangers they could get since they get so many clothes donated ! PLEASE HELP A SISTER OUT!

if u get them from the dry cleaners they usually take them back. If you put four of them with the hooks to the middle and use something to attach them together you can put them into a frame and they look decorative...might find a youtube video for it if you look.

No, his comes from a uniform shop, he rents I guess you call it, his uniforms from them, they mend, wash, dry and press them, if they can't be minded they replace them, so they want take them back either, but thanks for the suggestion, I'd love to find things to do with them! ( Instead of them taking up room here, and you can't even recycle them either I've checked into that too! )

You could make a wire box ; however, this takes some time ,and you do need to grind the sharp /cut ends. Bend the wire hangers around a broom handle to get the nice round corners or use a block of wood to get sharp 90 corners. Trim the the hook side and twist Bind the hangers together with hot glue or even dental floss( high tensile strength/cheap) Hooks could be used as handles for this box. Use fabric to make the walls / bottom of this box and make sure that the fabric is pulled tight. This wire box can be modified into a clothes drying rack or even a light box for photography/

Thanks, Kathryn! You are the best! Love your style. You asked about using clothespins. Yes, I use them the same way you do. I also use them to hold down tablecloths in the summer which would fly up otherwise. As for the dishwasher sign.....we could never count on its accuracy of a magnet indicator, so we now use a clip ON the soap dispenser lid. It is IMPOSSIBLE to miss the dirty/clean indicator because if they are clean, the clip is on the counter. If they are dirty the clip is on the soap lid, preventing it from being closed until removed. Happy Organizing! See you soon! Hangers? Will the dry cleaner take them back?

I always keep clothes pins in the kitchen drawer. Besides the bags of chips, choc chips, noodles, snacks I also use them for Spaghetti night or haircut night. I wrap the person with a dish towel and clip the towel together. Instant bib for older kids! Also, something fun- I like decorating them with nail polish-so cute! and I use them to display kids artwork on a wire ( or yarn).

Great video. My family also used the clothes pins trick. But when I grew up and moved to the city I found it hard to find them. So one thing I started to use was to cut down pant hangers. Like the kind you get from the store. Also for the next time your chargers fray. Before they do it help to use the spring from a pen to give it better support. Thanks for the video. Keep them coming they really help.
